- Bidirectional Intimate Partner Violence During COVID-19 in Portugal: Prevalence and Psychosocial Correlates
Olga Cunha, Sónia Caridade, Andreia Machado, Maria Manuela Peixoto
European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research, 2025
Several studies demonstrated that intimate bidirectional violence (BV) is more common than unidirectional IPV. However, little is known about the phenomenon of BV during COVID-19 lockdowns. The present study focuses on BV during the second lockdown in Portugal to characterize the BV rates in an online sample from the community and identify the main psychosocial correlates associated with BV. Three hundred and thirty-six Portuguese adults, with a mean age of 35.02 years (SD = 11.67; 18–68 years), participated in this study. In addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire, IPV (victimization and perpetration), psychological distress, COVID-19-related anxiety, COVID-19 fear, and life satisfaction measures were used. BV (31.3%) emerged as the most reported pattern of violence. The BV group scored higher on psychological distress and depression than the nonviolence group. Being married/living in cohabitation, having a high level of education, working on the front line (during the COVID-19 pandemic), and having psychological distress emerged as important predictors of BV. Results emphasized the role of psychosocial dimensions, particularly marital status/cohabitation and educational levels, as relevant risk factors for BV during a worldwide crisis event. The assessment, prevention, and intervention of IPV should consider the possibility of BV, providing a response congruent with its specificities. - Sexual function and dysfunction in the LGBTQIA+ community—including before and after gender-affirming surgery: recommendations from the Fifth International Consultation on Sexual Medicine (ICSM 2024)

Sexual Medicine Reviews, 2025
Introduction Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines focused on sexual (dys)function for the LGBTQIA+ (ie, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual) community, including before and after gender-affirming surgery, are still scarce. Objectives To provide an overview and recommendations for sexual (dys)function among individuals with diverse sexual orientations, transgender and gender-diverse individuals, and intersex individuals/individuals with differences of sexual development (DSD). Methods A committee of experts conducted a comprehensive review of the literature, focusing on scientific publications since the last consultation, for the fifth International Consultation on Sexual Medicine. Results Researches that considered populations with diverse sexual orientations were reviewed and largely focused on sexual satisfaction/pleasure, sexual functioning, and sexual difficulties. Additional topics included relationship and psychological dimensions, sexual functioning during receptive anal sex, chemsex, minority stress, asexuality, and sexuality in older adulthood. The main challenges are related to small sample sizes and mostly cross-sectional study designs that limit the generalization of findings. Research focused on sexual (dys)function among transgender and gender-diverse individuals tends to focus on a medical perspective of sexual function and is often based on cisgender models or methodology. Research has also focused attention on the relationship between medical interventions for gender-affirming care (eg, hormone therapy, surgery) and has often included cross-sectional designs or short-term follow-up. Current research also highlights the unique facets of sexual (dys)function that appear important to gender-diverse individuals, such as relational and body image factors. Fewer articles focused on individuals with intersex traits/DSD, and these included a diverse approach to the samples studied and methodology used. Much of this research focused on the impact of medical interventions (eg, hormone therapy, surgery) on sexual satisfaction and function. Across populations, there were limited validated measures of sexual (dys)function. Conclusion Overall, the main challenges in the field are related to methodological gaps, as acknowledged in this review, and a summary of the literature is provided. Diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as ethical considerations, are addressed, and clinical recommendations for supporting the sexual well-being of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, transgender and gender-diverse individuals, and intersex individuals/individuals with DSD are presented. - Suicide Risk in Veterinary Professionals in Portugal: Prevalence of Psychological Symptoms, Burnout, and Compassion Fatigue
Maria Manuela Peixoto
Archives of Suicide Research, 2025
Mental health problems and suicide risk among veterinarians and veterinary nurses are well documented in the literature. Data on veterinary assistants have been overlooked, however. In addition, information on Portuguese veterinary professionals is lacking. An online sample of 833 Portuguese veterinary professionals (443 veterinarians, 287 nurses, and 103 assistants) completed self-report questionnaires about suicide risk and mental health between December 2022 and March 2023. Descriptive analysis revealed that 3.5% of respondents attempted suicide during their lifetime; 17.2% experienced extremely severe depression and suicidal ideation; 17.8% and 27.0% experienced extremely severe stress and anxiety, respectively; and 27.4% and 27.7% reported burnout and compassion fatigue, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that professionals with a history of mental illness history; with current clinical symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress; and working more than 40 hours per week experienced greater levels of burnout, compassion fatigue, and suicide ideation. Other variables such as being a woman, being a veterinary assistant, and disagreeing with motives for euthanasia also predicted some mental health problems. Mental health problems in the Portuguese veterinary professionals are a major health concern. These professionals are at higher risk for suicide, and clinical implications and guidelines are discussed. - Prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of sexual difficulties and sexual dissatisfaction in Portuguese men and women: a community-based online study

Sexual and Relationship Therapy, 2025 - Social Representations of Sexual Assistance Services for People with Physical Disabilities in the Context of Portugal
Ana R. Pinho, Sara Carvalhaes, Liliana Rodrigues, Maria Manuela Peixoto, João Manuel de Oliveira, Conceição Nogueira
International Journal of Sexual Health, 2025
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to understand social representations of the Portuguese population regarding sexual assistance services for people with physical disabilities. Methods: A questionnaire collected sociodemographic information and attitudes concerning sexual assistance from 167 Portuguese participants over 18 years of age. Results: Results suggest most participants agree with legal recognition of sexual assistance services, expressing their agreement that it should require training, be remunerated, be aided by the availability of a list of professionals who provide these services, and attribution of public funds to make access possible to anyone. Contact with sex workers and perception of people with physical disabilities' interest in sexual assistance are associated with higher acceptance of these services. Conclusions: These findings showed positive social representations toward sexual assistance, emphasizing a need for further debate between people with disabilities, sex workers, academia and policymakers regarding training for providers of sexual assistance, creation of a list of sexual assistants, public funding to make these services accessible, and legal recognition of sexual services, to ensure the rights of people with disabilities and sex workers. Implications: The findings underscore the importance of advancing public discourse on key issues related to sexual assistance, including the development of specialized training programs for sexual assistance, the establishment of a list of qualified sexual assistants, the provision of public funding to enhance service accessibility, and the legal recognition of sexual assistance. These measures are essential to safeguarding the rights of both people with disabilities and sex workers. - Psychometric Properties and Gender Invariance of the Portuguese (European) Version of the Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale

Journal of Cross Cultural Gerontology, 2024
The sexuality of older people was understood as non-existent or as something outside the prevailing norm. In this sense, analysing people's sexual knowledge and attitudes towards older people is a challenge for theory and practice. The aim of this study is to translate and validate the Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale (ASKAS) for the Portuguese population. A sample of 994 Portuguese adults (70.9% women, n = 705) completed the ASKAS-PT along with a series of self-report measures. Confirmatory factor analysis and the psychometric properties of the Portuguese (European) version of ASKAS-PT were investigated, particularly reliability, temporal stability, and convergent and critical validity. This study also examined the gender measurement invariance of the ASKAS-PT. After confirmatory factor analysis, a two-factor model fit the Portuguese version best. Reliability and validity results also showed good results, and the ASKAS-PT appears to be a gender-invariant measure. Overall, the Portuguese version of the ASKAS showed good psychometric properties and appears to be a valid and reliable measure for assessing knowledge and attitudes about aging. - Life satisfaction, psychological distress, compassion satisfaction and resilience: when the pleasure of helping others protects veterinary staff from emotional suffering
Maria Manuela Peixoto, Olga Cunha
Veterinary Research Communications, 2024
Introduction Individuals working in veterinary field suffer significantly from mental health problems, and research has extensively focused on psychological and work-related predictors of psychological distress. This study intended to approach psychological distress through a positive lens by investigating the predictive role of life satisfaction on psychological distress in veterinary staff, and the mediating effect of compassion satisfaction, resilience and perceived social support. Methodology A total of 868 veterinary staff (i.e. veterinarians, veterinary nurses, veterinary assistants and veterinary administrative staff) completed a web-survey assessing life satisfaction, psychological distress, compassion satisfaction, resilience, and social support. Results Life satisfaction negatively predicts psychological distress, and compassion satisfaction and resilience showed a mediation effect on the relationship between life satisfaction and psychological distress, with compassion satisfaction explaining 59% and resilience 6.4% of the effect of life satisfaction on psychological distress. Conclusion Current data support the role of life satisfaction as a protective dimension on psychological distress within a broader sample population of veterinary staff in Portugal, highlighting the role of compassion satisfaction and resilience in contributing in minimising distress among veterinary staff. - COVID-19 fear and anxiety as mediators in the relationship between repetitive negative thinking and psychopathology: a community-based study during the 2nd confinement in Portugal

Journal of Family Violence, 2024 - Female sexual desire and trait-affect: the mediator role of depressed mood
Maria Manuela Peixoto
Sexual and Relationship Therapy, 2024
Lack of sexual desire has been reported as the most frequent sexual complain in women, and commonly associated to depressed mood. The association between trait-affect, depressed mood and female sexual functioning has been evaluated. However, the mediator role of depressed mood on trait-affect and female sexual desire has not been studied yet. The current study aims to investigate the mediator role of depressed mood in the relationship between trait-affect (positive and negative) and female sexual desire. One-hundred and seventy-one women from the general population participated in the study and completed self-reported measures assessing trait-affect, depressed mood, and sexual desire. Pearson’s correlations showed a significant correlation between trait-affect (positive and negative), depressed mood and female sexual desire. Mediation analyses indicated that depressed mood partially mediate the relationship between positive and negative trait-affect and female sexual desire, with a stronger mediation for positive trait-affect. Current findings support the impact of trait-affect and depressed mood on female sexual desire.Lay summary: Sexual desire problems are highly prevalent among women, and have been associated with depressive symptomatology. This study examined the role between positive and negative affect, depressed mood, and sexual desire in women. The relationship between positive and negative affect and women's sexual desire was partially mediated by depressed mood. - Does psychopathy mediate the relationship between exposure to intimate partner violence in childhood and the perpetration of intimate partner violence in adulthood?
