  • Mapping Quantum Computing Techniques for NP-Hard Problems in Operations Management and Operations Research
Daniel Bouzon Nagem Assad, Patricia Gomes Ferreira da Costa, Thaís Spiegel, Hélcio de Oliveira Rocha
    Engineering Reports, 2026
This study examines the fragmented and rapidly evolving body of knowledge on the application of quantum computing to NP‐hard decision problems in Operations Management (OM) and Operations Research (OR). It aims to systematically map how quantum optimization approaches are formulated and applied across core OM/OR problem classes, highlighting current advances and unresolved challenges for research and practice. A systematic mapping review was conducted using peer‐reviewed studies indexed in Scopus and Web of Science from 2014 to 2026. The literature was classified by problem type, mathematical formulation, quantum technique, and application domain, with attention to the alignment between quantum models and established OM/OR decision frameworks. The review reveals a strong predominance of QUBO‐based formulations and annealing‐oriented approaches, mainly applied to logistics, manufacturing, and financial optimization problems. Applications remain largely exploratory, with limited empirical validation, weak theoretical integration with OM/OR decision‐making models, and persistent challenges related to scalability and hybrid quantum‐classical performance. Only a small subset of studies demonstrates how quantum formulations can support real‐world scheduling and resource coordination problems. This study proposes an analytical framework linking quantum optimization paradigms to canonical OM/OR NP‐hard problem classes, identifying key research gaps and methodological tensions to support more theory‐driven and empirically grounded future applications, especially in complex decision environments.

  • Comparing the current short-term cancer incidence prediction models in Brazil with state-of-the-art time-series models
Daniel Bouzon Nagem Assad, Patricia Gomes Ferreira da Costa, Thaís Spiegel, Javier Cara, Miguel Ortega-Mier, et al.
    Scientific Reports, 2024
The World Health Organization has highlighted that cancer was the second-highest cause of death in 2019. This research aims to present the current forecasting techniques found in the literature, applied to predict time-series cancer incidence and then, compare these results with the current methodology adopted by the Instituto Nacional do Câncer (INCA) in Brazil. A set of univariate time-series approaches is proposed to aid decision-makers in monitoring and organizing cancer prevention and control actions. Additionally, this can guide oncological research towards more accurate estimates that align with the expected demand. Forecasting techniques were applied to real data from seven types of cancer in a Brazilian district. Each method was evaluated by comparing its fit with real data using the root mean square error, and we also assessed the quality of noise to identify biased models. Notably, three methods proposed in this research have never been applied to cancer prediction before. The data were collected from the INCA website, and the forecast methods were implemented using the R language. Conducting a literature review, it was possible to draw comparisons previous works worldwide to illustrate that cancer prediction is often focused on breast and lung cancers, typically utilizing a limited number of time-series models to find the best fit for each case. Additionally, in comparison to the current method applied in Brazil, it has been shown that employing more generalized forecast techniques can provide more reliable predictions. By evaluating the noise in the current method, this research shown that the existing prediction model is biased toward two of the studied cancers Comparing error results between the mentioned approaches and the current technique, it has been shown that the current method applied by INCA underperforms in six out of seven types of cancer tested. Moreover, this research identified that the current method can produce a biased prediction for two of the seven cancers evaluated. Therefore, it is suggested that the methods evaluated in this work should be integrated into the INCA cancer forecast methodology to provide reliable predictions for Brazilian healthcare professionals, decision-makers, and oncological researchers.

  • Pull processes in health care: a systematic literature review

    Gestao E Producao, 2022
The lean production paradigm was first adopted by the automobile industry and has been progressively adapted and adopted by several other sectors. Health services are, in general, co-created by users. This poses a logical challenge when applying one of the principles of the lean production paradigm: the establishment of pulled processes. This article investigates how pull processes have been adapted for lean production in healthcare (lean healthcare). A bibliometric analysis of 267 articles on lean healthcare research, published between 2004 and 2021, is presented in this article. A qualitative review of 233 articles is also presented. Most articles presented in this study were published after 2012, and publications and citations are primarily from the US, Brazil, and the UK. 39 articles pertain to an application of the concept, but most of the articles refer to pulling intermediate products, which are not subject to the aforementioned logical challenge. Only 8 articles effectively discuss the pulling of the flow of users. The main conclusion is that pulling has a distinct objective when applied to health care: the goal is not exactly the elimination of queues (the equivalents of intermediate stocks) but the elimination of idleness in downstream resources with limited capacity.

Topic of discussions over the last decades, the literature related to the care of patients suffering from poly-trauma, under the assistance point of view, is sufficiently consolidated concerning to the adoption of best practices, what, usually are conducted and disseminated by accrediting organizations. However, expanding the search frontier beyond the assistance dimension, it's noticed the divergences between the recent researches or theoretical shortcomings regarding to the design and management of these operations. In face of this finding, noticed from a literature review in the most important bases of operations management and health, it's adopted a conceptual model which covers relevant elements of the project of an operation, such as: strategy, capacity, human resources, incentive systems, organizational structure and decision making; in order to systematize the current stage of the field, highlighting the differences between recent studies and proposing a set of practices and premises, which are necessary for the operationalization of the proposed model.
