Environmental and geo-life assessment to produce alternative fuel from plastic waste and used motor oil: a sustainable energy approach for Iraq Iman A. Alattabi, Safaa M. Almudhafar, Israa Jafar, Jameel Al-Naffakh, Basim A. Almayahi International Journal of Aquatic Research and Environmental Studies, 2025 The environmental impact of oil-based fuels, coupled with the ever-increasing accumulation of plastic waste and used engine oil (WEO), has led researchers to search for sustainable energy alternatives that simultaneously address issues of energy security and environmental degradation. This study aims to conduct an environmental and geolife assessment of alternative fuel mixtures derived from plastic waste and used motor oil, tested in an external combustion system under controlled laboratory conditions in Najaf Governorate, Iraq. The analyses included evaluating the thermal performance and emission characteristics of fuel mixtures (PDF-WEO) in different proportions of WEO (10%, 20%, and 30%) using pyrolysis plastic fuel (PDF) mixed with used and filtered motor oil. The results showed that the 70/30 blend (PDF/WEO) achieved the highest thermal efficiency of 35.5%, while reducing carbon monoxide and suspended particulate matter emissions by 40% and 37%, respectively. Despite a 24% reduction in NO57 emissions, the study recommends further improvements. This study highlights the potential for hazardous waste to be converted into useful fuel while minimizing the associated environmental impact. The geo-biological perspective also reflects the importance of using clean fuels in areas with high population density and environmental sensitivity, highlighting the importance of circular economy practices and low-emission energy strategies. The findings support the integration of waste-derived fuels as an effective pathway towards a sustainable energy transition in arid regions such as central Iraq.
ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS OF A LOW-COST SOLAR STOVE USING RECYCLED MATERIALS: A CLEAN ENERGY INNOVATION FOR HOT ARID REGIONS Zainab A Alzarfi, Safaa M. Almudhafar, Israa Jafar, Jameel Al-Naffakh, Basim Almayahi Archives for Technical Sciences, 2025 Providing clean and affordable energy for domestic use remains a persistent challenge in hot and arid regions, particularly in off-grid communities. This study presents a geo-environmental analysis of an innovative low-cost solar stove designed using recycled aluminum heat exchangers and copper tubing, pressurized with air to enhance thermal conductivity. The stove was tested under extreme climatic conditions in central Iraq, where ambient temperatures exceeded 45°C, in order to evaluate its suitability as a sustainable cooking solution. Results indicated a thermal efficiency of 62%, with the system achieving boiling temperatures (170°C at the exchanger and 160°C at the cooking surface) within 28 minutes. The design showed strong potential for replacing conventional gas and electric stoves, which are associated with high carbon emissions and fuel dependency. Moreover, by integrating discarded airconditioning components, the stove promotes recycling and aligns with circular economy practices. This environmentally conscious solution not only reduces the carbon footprint to zero but also addresses the urgent need for clean cooking technologies in resource-scarce environments. The analysis underscores the stove’s applicability in regions affected by high solar exposure and energy poverty, offering a viable pathway toward sustainable development goals in the energy and environmental sectors.
Decorative Flame Behavior Study in Visualizing Wavelengths and Frequency: Ruben's Tube Construction Experiment Ahmad T. Jameel, Mohammed R. Al-Qasaab, Jameel Al-Naffakh International Journal of Environment Engineering and Education, 2021 Sound waves are very frequent in everyday life, although they are never seen. The particles of the average vibrations are parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave. In this article, the effect of changing the frequency of the sound wave on standing waves was investigated with different hertz frequencies to show technical images that can be visually translated to give fundamental predictions about the origin of the musical combinations, as it was proved that the sound is a pressure wave by giving the vibrations one side while the gas is released the other side. To obtain accurate results, the variables were fixed in the experiment as the type of gas supplied for the same experiments. It is also installed so that the distance between the diaphragm and the amplifier does not differ. The results analyzed after numerous data collection and calculations verify that the generated wavelength and frequency are directly proportional. As the frequency specified in Hz increased, the number of inverse nodes and nodes also increased. Obtaining standing waves helps to understand the nature of sound as a pressure wave, and to give all the details about the experiment and evaluate it. Sources of error and possible solutions to overcome these problems are also mentioned.
Improve and reduce the economic cost and pollutants of a swirl burner Jameel Al-Naffakh, Karrar S. Hasan, Mohammed Al-fahham, Mohammed R. Al-Qasab Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2020 Abstract The Arab Gulf region is rich in oil products, as Iraq is the second largest country in the Gulf with oil reserves, as Iraq exports to the world 3,500,000 million barrels per day, thus oil is the main source of energy production. However, the main challenges facing energy developers are efficiency, pollution and the economy. Therefore, this paper focused on pollution problems associated with combustion operations as well as economic costs by changing the type of fuel from diesel to liquefied petroleum gas and modifying the system to raise its efficiency and reduce emissions and cost, by setting a vane guide to make swirl fluid with a strong and coherent structure and thus a near perfect ideal few Emission of greenhouse gases at an acceptable cost compared to diesel fuel, where the economic side of the system was highlighted in terms of excessive fuel consumption, as diesel fuel consumption for the system during the whole working hour reached 24,000 Iraqi dinars, while fuel consumption with LPG reached 15,600 Iraqi dinars, thus saving 8,400 Iraqi dinars Thus, fuel consumption was reduced by 0.35%. Consequently, the improved fuel economy and environmental considerations of the external combustion system make it a sustainable choice in the energy field such as industries, power stations and all other fields.
Burner rim geometry effect on flame stability Jameel Al-Naffakh, Mohammed Al-Fahham, Qahtan Adnan Abed Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2020 Abstract We studied a swirl burner in atmospheric pressure combustion system with different burner lengths to burner rim diameter ratios (L/D). Three ratios, of L/D 1, 2 and 3, were used to investigate the effect of the burner’s geometry on the stability window. The results show that the position of the flame front stabilization changes with L/D ratio. The flame front stabilizes closer to the burner rim as the length of the burner is increased. The equivalence ratio of the mixture was taken as constant for the comparison’s sake. The flame stabilizes closer to the rim with an increase of the rim length.
Comparative investigation for solar thermal energy technologies system Mohammed R. Al_Qasab, Qahtan A. Abed, Wisam A. Abd Al-wahid, Jameel T. Al-Naffakh Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2019 The multiple uses of fossil fuels make them depleted in the coming years. Also, the large amount of pollution produced by the use of this fuel has made the world seriously think of environmentally familiar alternative sources of energy. Universal energy is vast and diverse energy, with the ability to cover the individual’s energy needs in various fields in the coming years. The focus of this study was a parabolic dish system. There are different uses solar of parabolic dish applications that can be limited by two main groups: thermal generation and electric power generation. A thermal generation used to generate steam, solar cooking, water heating, and water distillation. The briefly objective is to review and analysis the thermal generation published by taken into considering used parabolic collector system. Also, evaluate solar dish operators in differences covering like, the composition of concentrators, the material of reflector, receiver design, parabolic dish diameter, rim angle, and focal length. These characteristics drive to entire structure possible for a parabolic dish. Finally, this article may be useful for the new research worker to consider the requirement for Thermal solar generation integrated with a parabolic dish.
