  • Technological advances for estimating and reducing gasoline evaporation losses in the Petroleum industry
Pedro Orozco, Victor Pugliese, Arturo Gonzalez-Quiroga, Adriana Arango
    1st IEEE Colombian Caribbean Conference C3 2023, 2023
This paper intends to provide an overview of the current state of gasoline evaporation losses calculations and the technologies development for reducing emissions in the petroleum industry. The article describes the gasoline evaporation phenomena and the negative impact on the environment and human health. The review addresses emissions of volatile organic compounds from gasoline in different operations systems such as gas stations and refineries. We reviewed standards and protocol calculations for evaporation losses in shore tanks and extended applications. Most papers use industrial standards for estimating evaporation losses in storage tanks, and a few studies apply an uncertainty study associated with the measurements. Finally, the paper describes the estimation of evaporation losses using Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations, which provide relevant data to support theoretical and experimental hydrocarbon evaporation models in storage tanks.
  • A Methodological Proposal for Implementing Demand‐Shifting Strategies in the Wholesale Electricity Market
    Máximo A. Domínguez-Garabitos, Víctor S. Ocaña-Guevara, Félix Santos-García, Adriana Arango-Manrique, Miguel Aybar-Mejía
    Energies, 2022
The energy transition has shown that fossil generation can be complemented with renewable energy and other resources capable of providing flexibility to the energy system’s operation, in compliance with the wholesale electricity market’s rules. This paper proposes a market-based methodology for introducing flexible demand in the energy dispatch, optimizing the scheduling of electricity system operation in the short-term, and considers the challenge of implementing an incentive scheme for participants in demand-response programs. The scheme includes the criteria of the elasticity of substitution and a renewable energy quota. This methodology is focused on a strategic demand shift to minimize the cost of supply; increase the dispatch of renewable energy; control CO2 emissions; and satisfy the generation, demand, and transmission operating constraints. These conditions encourage the development of a simulation tool that allows a sensitivity analysis to aid decision-making by operators and agents. The proposed methodology optimizes the operational cost of generation supply and specific performance indicators to determine the percentages of demand shift, the amount of CO2 emissions, the ratio of unserved power, the demand benefits obtained from an incentive scheme, and the natural market behavior.
  • Lifetime Degradation Study of Batteries Operating as Community Energy Storage Systems
    H. Yepes-Fernandez, M. Restrepo, A. Arango-Manrique
2022 IEEE Andescon Technology and Innovation for Andean Industry Andescon 2022, 2022
Community Energy Storage Systems (CESSs) represent a new paradigm of distribution systems that integrate batteries to optimize the operation of primary and secondary networks. However, as already seen in electric vehicle industry, determining lifetime degradation of such devices according to their operating profiles is an important question that has to be answered in order to anticipate its technical and economic viability. Thus, this paper presents a study of lifetime degradation in Li-ion batteries operating as CESSs and providing ancillary services in a distribution feeder. The study is based on the Rainflow Counting (RC) algorithm, a method that is used to approximate the number of charging and discharging battery cycles, along with an empirical battery model to predict its degradation. These algorithms are used with two different charging and discharging scenearios for a particular CESS control method. The results show 6% to 13% decrease in service lifetime for a Depth of Discharge (DoD) of 80%, which is consistent with similar studies for CESSs.
  • A Study on Control Strategies for Aggregated Community Energy Storage Systems in Medium Voltage Distribution Networks
Hernan Yepes-Fernandez, Mauricio Restrepo, Adriana Arango-Manrique
    IEEE Access, 2022
Community Energy Storage Systems (CESSs) emerge as an innovative way to integrate batteries into Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) distribution networks to provide ancillary services and improve the quality of energy received by the end user. However, since CESSs are still emerging technologies, there is much research space in this field for proposing innovative and economic control algorithms for such devices. Thus, this paper presents a study of four control strategies applied to an MV distribution network, i.e., peak shaving, line losses control, line congestion reduction, and system voltage control, through an Aggregated Community Energy Storage System (ACESS), which is represented as the sum of multiple CESSs connected in LV systems, viewed from MV side. The proposed strategies are based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), a technique that, using the future demand forecast data, calculates the dispatch of ACESS. The results show, with respect to the base case, an improvement between 12.8% and 15.1% for the line losses control strategy, a reduction of 31.5% on the maximum demand for the peak shaving control strategy, a maximum lowering of 12% on the currents of some lines for the congestion control strategy, and an enhancement of 0.15% for the voltage control strategy. Moreover, for estimating the service lifetime of the ACESS after applying the control algorithms, the Rainflow Counting Algorithm (RCA) is used, exhibiting that, regardless of the control strategy, the degradation is inversely proportional to the storage capacity.
  • Demand-Shifting Strategies to Optimize the Performance of the Wholesale Electricity Market: A Dominican Republic Study Case
    Maximo A. Dominguez-Garabitos, Victor S. Ocana-Guevara, Felix Santos-Garcia, Adriana Arango-Manrique, Miguel Aybar-Mejia
    IEEE Access, 2022
The dimensions of the costs and incentives necessary for integrating demand response into the wholesale electricity market are subject to energy policies and bulk system operation. The electricity industry must gain operational flexibility to support the energy transition caused by renewable energy and decarbonization. Complementary services and technologies of demand response programs can be optimized by exploiting the variety of uses of this resource. The main objective of this work is to apply the concept of elasticity of substitution in a strategic demand shift program to promote the integration of renewable energies and the reduction of non-served power, considering an economical and safe generation dispatch. The methodology is analyzed through a case study applied in the Dominican Republic’s electricity market, in which the elasticity of substitution coefficients is used to adjust variations below 10.49% of the base demand in the peak period. These variations reduce the generation operating cost by 8.4%, marginal cost by 30.19%, and non-served power by 19.1% when renewable energy increases by 5%. The inclusion of the cost of CO2 emissions in the simulation of the operating cost function makes the objective function higher than the baseline function. For relative variations in operating cost ranging from 7.27% to 16.03%, the reduction in tons of CO2 equivalent varies from 2.77 to 28.02. This study contextualizes the economic effect of the CO2 emissions control, giving new possibilities to optimize system operation and the wholesale electricity market based on demand response programs that encourage flexible consumption, with favorable economic and environmental results.
  • Computer Tool to Analyze the Effects of Opportunity and In-Motion Charging on Distribution Systems

2022 IEEE Andescon Technology and Innovation for Andean Industry Andescon 2022, 2022
This paper presents the development of a computer tool for studying the impact of In-Motion Charging (IMC) and Opportunity Charging (OC) for Electric Buses (EBs) in distribution systems. This tool is developed as a Python code that computes several operational bus fleet parameters, including speed, position, power, energy consumption and battery State of Charge (SoC) during an operating day. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) is also developed to facilitate simulation data input, output visualization, and distribution system impact analysis configuration, which is performed externally with OpenDSS software. A study case that analyzes the electrification of a bus service route in Barranquilla, Colombia, its possible impacts on a distribution feeder’s voltages and currents, as well as the SoC of the EB batteries, is presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed tool.

2021 IEEE Pes Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Latin America Isgt Latin America 2021, 2021
The road transportation sector is facing a transition from fossil fuels to electricity that is producing many technical impacts in local distribution systems because of the widespread installation of home and public Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers with power outputs that range from few to hundreds of kW. To ease the distribution system impact analysis of these rapidly growing loads, this paper describes a software application developed in Matlab that integrates the attributes of Eclipse SUMO and OpenDSS to co-simulate a road transportation network and a distribution system, obtain realistic usage schedules of EV chargers, and quantify their effects on voltages and currents of medium- and low-voltage feeders. A case study presenting the distribution system impact analysis of six public EV charging stations in Barranquilla, Colombia is reported to illustrate the features of the developed tool. The results demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed application software to simulate practical charging impact scenarios with different transportation networks, charger locations, and power levels.
