It highlights how the visual-verbal medium of graphic novels inculcates critical and creative thinking and comprehension. The paper advocates for the inclusion of graphic novels in Indian libraries, contributing to education and sociocultural development. The paper begins with a fundamental reading to define critical literacy and graphic novels, followed by close reading and visual-verbal analysis of select Indian graphic novels to demonstrate their capacity to foster critical literacy. The paper employs Ciardiello’s (2004) critical inquiry practices as the theoretical framework.

Every need of the society leads to innovation. Modern scientific and technological innovation has a social responsibility and there is need of listening and addressing to the collective voices of the social groups. The need of the society is heard in the form of sociopolitical movements as they reflect the sociocultural reality. They resonate the mundane need, the rights of the native people over their land and ecosystem, and the need for protection of culture and environment. Through such emergence of movements, every individual of the society contribute to the social concerns and take part in the decision-making. In this purview, this chapter introduces the sociocultural movements of the world in general and India in particular to inform individual’s social and environmental concerns to the scientific world.
