Cryogenic Cooling in Sustainable Machining: A Review on Advancements and Applications for Difficult-to-Machine Materials Ashwani Sharma, Vikas Diwakar, Kamal Kishore, Abhimanyu Chaudhari, Akash Subhash Awale, et al. Journal of Tribology, 2026 In recent years, the manufacturing industry has increasingly emphasized sustainable machining practices to mitigate environmental pollution and enhance operator safety. One of the sustainable techniques widely explored in the past few years is cryogenic cooling. Cryogenic cooling has emerged as a highly effective and environmentally benign alternative. The application of liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a cryogenic coolant significantly influences tool performance and process efficiency by reducing the temperature at the tool–chip–workpiece interface, improving dimensional accuracy, minimizing tool wear, decreasing cutting forces, and enhancing surface integrity. This paper primarily reviews previous and current research articles on cryogenic cooling techniques in machining operations, including turning, milling, drilling, and grinding, for various difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys, hardened steels, stainless steels, ceramics, and composites. The discussion highlights the limitations of conventional cutting fluids, challenges encountered during the machining of these materials, and the comparative performance of LN2 and LCO2 cooling systems. The outcomes from reviewed studies reveal that cryogenic cooling substantially improves machinability, chip breakability, and surface quality while reducing thermal and mechanical loads on the cutting tool. Furthermore, the paper identifies recent advances in hybrid cryogenic approaches and outlines potential future research directions to enhance the sustainability and industrial adaptability of cryogenic machining systems.
Implementing Sustainable Cryo-MQL Grinding Practices for Improvement of Tribological Characterizes of Inconel 625 Kamal Kishore, Ashwani Sharma, Akash Subhash Awale, Manoj Kumar Sinha Journal of Tribology, 2025 Cryo-MQL is an impactful, sustainable cooling/lubrication approach that addresses constraints such as wheel loading and thermal damage of ground Inconel 625 caused by its low thermal conductivity and work hardening tendency. The present investigation explores the eco-friendly Cryo-MQL approach, i.e., liquid nitrogen (LN2) with groundnut oil-based sustainable grinding, to enhance the grindability and surface integrity of Inconel 625. For confirmation, cryo-MQL outcomes, including grinding forces, roughness parameters, bearing area analysis, grinding temperature, surface morphology, and microhardness, have been compared with dry and MQL outcomes. The results indicate that cryo-MQL exhibits excellent surface tribological performance in lower skewness and kurtosis parameters with a higher bearing area ratio, i.e., 78.84%, and free-from grinding burn and redeposition layer formation. Besides, lower grinding forces and temperature with no significant microhardness change highlighted a better grindability of high-strength alloy. Finally, chip morphology investigations under various conditions have been performed to gain further insights into the grindability of Inconel 625 in terms of negligible wear tracks with long C-type microchips. Therefore, it can be concluded that cryo-MQL grinding safeguards the surface qualities of the ground surfaces and provides clean grinding conditions.
Modeling and Simulation Study of Dry Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Grinding of Tool Steel With Single Alumina Abrasive Grit Abhimanyu Chaudhari, Ashwani Sharma, Akash Subhash Awale, Mohd Zaheer Khan Yusufzai, Meghanshu Vashista Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2022 In the precision fabrication industries, ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding is widely utilized for the finishing of “difficult-to-cut” materials due to its intermittent cutting mechanism and brittle-to-ductile mode machining. In this study, a two-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of single grit ultrasonic vibration-assisted dry grinding (UVADG) and conventional dry grinding (CDG) of AISI D2 steel has been developed, which taken into account the influence of longitudinal ultrasonic vibration on the workpiece with variable downfeed. The effects of ultrasonic vibration and downfeed on the chip formation mechanism, temperature field, grinding force, and equivalent stress and strain were evaluated by analytical and simulation methods. The results show that the formation of the grinding chips under UVADG is much shorter and straighter than CDG mode at all respective downfeed. The validation experiment compared the simulated and experimental grinding force in both grinding modes to verify the reliability of the FEM results. The validation results demonstrate that the FEM model can accurately describe the single grit UVADG and CDG grinding. At each downfeed, the CDG mode has generated a larger equivalent plastic strain than the UVADG mode, resulting in a higher thermomechanical load on the workpiece. According to the findings, UVADG mode has the least plastic damage on the ground surface, which may improve the surface integrity of the ground component.
