Temperature Influence on Self-Healing Characteristics of Metallized Film Capacitors Ahmet A. Hojamov, Ivan O. Ivanov, Alexey V. Pechnikov Proceedings of the 2024 Conference of Young Researchers in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Elcon 2024, 2024 The main self-healing characteristics of commercial PET and PP capacitors were investigated over a wide temperature range from −40 to +100 Celsius degrees. It was found that the electrical strength is inversely proportional to temperature for both types of capacitors. The average self-healing energy ranges from 50 mJ (100 °C) to 100 mJ (−40 °C) for PET capacitors and from 100 mJ (100 °C) to 500 mJ (−40 °C) for PP capacitors. It was found that the cumulative failure energy values for PET capacitors exceed those for PP capacitors up to 100 °C. Dependencies of relative capacitance $\\left(C/C_{0}\\right)$ and relative dielectric losses $\\left(\\tan \\delta / \\tan \\delta_{0}\\right)$ at a frequency of 1 kHz were also obtained over a wide temperature range.
Efficiency Evaluation of the Self-Healing Process of Metallized Film Capacitors for Polymer Films with Various Chemical Composition Alexey V. Pechnikov, Ahmet A. Hojamov, Vladimir Ermilov Proceedings of the 2024 Conference of Young Researchers in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Elcon 2024, 2024 The paper reports the results of experimental study of the self-healing efficiency on metal-film capacitor elements with an all-over metallization. The characteristics of the self-healing have been obtained for capacitor elements made of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulfide with zinc metallization and polyimide with aluminum metallization. The effect of electrode resistance on the efficiency of self-healing has been experimentally investigated for zinc metallized polyethylene terephthalate films with square resistance ranging from 2 to 85 Ohm. The parameters of the self-healing process affecting its efficiency were determined. The insulation resistance degradation kinetics of the of metallized polymer films due to inefficient self-healing acts was obtained. The polypropylene film was found to be superior over the other studied films in terms of the efficiency of self-healing.
Parametric and Catastrophic Failures of Metallized Film Capacitors Under High Voltage Stress Ivan O. Ivanov, Dmitry Y. Glivenko, Ahmet A. Hojamov, Alexey V. Pechnikov IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2024 Operation ability of different metallized film capacitors under high voltage stress was investigated. The automated ramp voltage test method was suggested. The experimental setup and software for experimental data processing were developed. Self-healing characteristics in the wide temperature range were obtained. It was found that increasing of operating temperature leads to decreasing of self-healing events number which corresponds to parametric or catastrophic failure. The critical values of cumulative self-healing energy for investigated capacitors until parametric and catastrophic failures were determined. Statistical analysis of self-healing events showed the presence of two types of processes with different energy distributions.
The Phenomenon of Low Frequency Dielectric Losses Increasing in Metallized Film Capacitors Ivan O. Ivanov, Ahmet À. Hojamov Proceedings of the Seminar on Microelectronics Dielectrics and Plasmas Theory and Practical Applications Mdp 2023, 2023 Metallized film capacitors have the highest operating electric field (more than 200 kV/mm) compare another capacitor types. Such high operating electric field explains by self-healing ability which related with isolating of breakdown channel. Multiple self-healing acts lead to changing of capacitors parameters: capacitance, dielectric losses and equivalent parallel resistance. These parameters changing during capacitors aging was investigated in a wide frequency range (0.1 Hz – 1 MHz). It was found that as the capacitors aging, dielectric losses increase at low frequency of electric field (less than 10 Hz). This phenomenon of low frequency dielectric losses increasing can be explained by formation of graphite layers between polymer films near breakdown channels.
Experimental Study of Self-Healing Characteristics and Insulation Resistance of Metallized Polypropylene Film under Various Inter-Layer Pressure Alexey V. Pechnikov, Ahmet A. Hojamov Proceedings of the Seminar on Microelectronics Dielectrics and Plasmas Theory and Practical Applications Mdp 2023, 2023 The self-healing of metallized film capacitor’s performance after dielectric breakdown is a unique ability making them high reliable, attractive for application under high voltage stresses, including pulse voltages typical for power electronics applications. The actual metallized film capacitors are tightly wounded rolls with inter-layer pressure declining from peak values counting tens of bars around the mandrel to units of bars in top layers. This work presents experimental findings of self-healing process characteristics such as energy, duration and micro-arc discharge time-dependent resistance under actual inter-layer pressures typical for metal-film capacitors. The insulation resistance of stacked metallized polypropylene films after self-healing under high pressures were found to be decreasing, resulting in current leakages to occur. Current leakages origination was associated with feasible carbon deposition near the breakdown channel due to polymer decomposition in high temperature arc discharge. Obtained results show the proper choice of film winding tension importance for capacitor’s reliability.
Metallized film capacitors operation under the ramp voltage test Dmitry Y. Glivenko, Ivan O. Ivanov, Ahmet A. Hojamov, Alexey V. Pechnikov Proceedings of the 2023 5th International Youth Conference on Radio Electronics Electrical and Power Engineering Reepe 2023, 2023 In this paper, the automated ramp voltage test method for metallized film capacitors was suggested. This method was used to investigate capacitors failure reasons under high electric load. For this purpose, experimental setup and software for experimental data processing were developed. Experimental investigation method was based on high voltage testing of different metallized film capacitors types. It was found that in the case of high electric load, capacitors failure is related to dielectric resistance decreasing due to multiple breakdown events. The conditions of parametric and catastrophic failures of tested capacitors were revealed. The suggested test method also allows to conduct «soft» capacitors treatment of metallized film capacitors.
Characteristics of Self-Healing Processes in Metallized Film Capacitors with All-over and Segmented Electrodes Ivan O. Ivanov, Dmitry Y. Glivenko, Ahmet A. Hojamov Proceedings of the 2022 Conference of Russian Young Researchers in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Elconrus 2022, 2022 Segmented type of electrodes is widely used in modern metallized film capacitors due to its advantages in the case of dielectric breakdown and following self-healing process. However, the advantages of this electrodes type compared with all-over type are not obvious to a wide range of consumers. Characteristics of self-healing processes in metallized film capacitors with all-over and segmented electrodes in voltage overstress modes are presented in this paper. Electrical parameters of investigated capacitors: capacitance, dielectric losses and insulation resistance were measured during electrical aging process. The main reasons of metallized film capacitors failure depending on electrodes type were determined. Experimental results confirmed efficiency of metallized film capacitors with segmented metallization. It can be used in numerical simulation of self-healing processes and efficiency evaluation of different segmentation patterns.
Randomization Method Application in Numerical Investigation of Metallized Film Capacitors Ivan Ivanov, Nikita Fedotov, Ahmet Hojamov 2021 IEEE 62nd International Scientific Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering of Riga Technical University Rtucon 2021 Proceedings, 2021 Numerical simulation of physical processes is effective method in the design of new energy-intensive electric capacitor types. Polymer film capacitors are widely used in modern power equipment, because of its extremely high value of specific energy. As a rule, numerical simulation uses ideal geometric objects and physical conditions. This fact explains some difference between experimental and simulation results. In present paper application of randomization method in the study of electrophysical processes in metallized film capacitors' electrodes is presented. As an example of possible application, the numerical model of segmented capacitor's electrodes electrothermal destruction during self-healing process is presented. The obtained results of numerical simulation have a statistical dispersion that correlates with the experimental data. Suggested randomization method is an addition to the research carried out in this scientific direction.
