Selection of Number of IMFs and Order of Their AR Models for Feature Extraction in SVM-Based Bearing Diagnosis Domingos Sávio Tavares Mendes Junior, Rafael Suzuki Bayma, Alexandre Luiz Amarante Mesquita Signals, 2026 This study investigated the influence of hyperparameter selection within an EEMD–AR–SVM framework for bearing fault diagnosis under constant- and variable-speed operating conditions. Two preprocessing configurations, namely, Method 1, in which EEMD was applied after segmentation, and Method 2, in which EEMD preceded segmentation, were evaluated under three rotational regimes—constant speed, acceleration (Test A), and deceleration (Test B)—while number of Intrinsic Mode Functions (N), autoregressive model order (L), and segment length were systematically varied towards identifying combinations that maximized classification accuracy. The results showed the methods achieved 100% accuracy under constant-speed operation. However, Method 2 consistently outperformed Method 1 under nonstationary regimes, reaching 94.12% accuracy during acceleration and 95.00% during deceleration. The outer race remained the most challenging fault type, although its separability substantially improved when EEMD was performed prior to segmentation. The findings demonstrated, in a clear and interpretable manner, that the empirical choice of N and L directly affects classifier accuracy in stationary and nonstationary scenarios and the order of preprocessing steps plays a decisive role in diagnostic reliability. Such contributions provide a reproducible methodological basis for advancing vibration-based fault diagnosis and support the development of interpretable, high-performance predictive maintenance strategies for industrial environments.
Decision Tree and ANOVA as Feature Selection from Vibration Signals to Improve the Diagnosis of Belt Conveyor Idlers João L. L. Soares, Thiago B. Costa, Geovane S. do Nascimento, Walter S. Sousa, Jullyane M. S. de Figueiredo, et al. Signals, 2025 This study aims to compare decision tree and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) techniques as feature selection methods, combined with Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD) for feature extraction, to enhance the diagnosis of faults in belt conveyor idlers. Belt conveyors are widely used in mining for efficient transport, but idlers composed of rollers are frequently subject to failure, making continuous monitoring essential to ensure reliability. Automated diagnostic solutions using vibration signals and machine learning rely on signal processing for feature extraction, often requiring dimensionality reduction or feature selection to improve classification accuracy. Due to the limitations of traditional techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in handling temporal variations, Decision Tree and ANOVA emerge as effective alternatives for feature selection. This framework applied to each feature selection method, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used as a classification technique. The diagnostic performance of each method, including the case without feature selection, was evaluated. The results showed a higher diagnostic accuracy performance for the approaches that applied the features from the decision tree and from ANOVA. The improvement in the diagnosis of roller failures with feature selection was corroborated with the hit rates of failure mode, severity level, and location of a defective roller above 93.5%.
Modal, Structural, and Comfort Analyses for Improving Customized Bicycles for Recreational Ridings of People with Disabilities Andrey Maciel Araújo da Silva, Sérgio de Souza Custódio Filho, Leonardo Dantas Rodrigues, Fábio Antônio do Nascimento Setúbal, Sérgio Aruana Elarrat Canto, et al. Vibration, 2024 Leisure activities are known to be especially important for the health of people with disabilities. In Belém, PA, an Amazonian city in Brazil, a nonprofitable organization has promoted leisure ridings in bicycles for those people in Utinga State Park, a large green area for physical and leisure activities. The handcrafted bikes have a sidecar attached for users with disabilities which are ridden by trained volunteers. Since such bikes have been empirically manufactured, they require some minor improvements in safety, comfort, and handling, and verification of structural strength. Therefore, ergonomic, modal, and forced vibration analyses assessed the user’s comfort and safety and a structural analysis with the use of strain gauges evaluated the bicycle’s structural strength. Initially, a numerical modal analysis was performed using the finite element method, and the modal model obtained was validated by an experimental modal analysis employing shaker excitation. ISO-2631-based evaluations of forced vibration and human body comfort were conducted regarding whole-body vibration in vehicles and mechanical equipment. Vibration measurements at the position of the rider and sidecar occupant were obtained during rides on the bicycle and, according to the results, in general, when subjected to loads, the bicycle showed low stress levels far from the yield stress of the material, promoting an excellent safety factor in relation to its structural integrity. The modal, comfort, and forced vibration analyses revealed a mode of vibration in the sidecar that caused discomfort to the back of the users. Ergonomics analysis pointed out changes in the handlebars, the bicycle seat, the coupling between the sidecar and the bike, and the dimensions of the sidecar will provide greater comfort and safety. This paper presents and discusses the proposed modifications to both bicycle and sidecar.
Torques and Moments of Inertia Models for Horizontal Axis Hydrokinetic Turbine Driveline M. H. C. Bentes, J. J. A. Lopes, K. A. Pinheiro, S. De S. Custódio Filho, J. R. P. Vaz, et al. Trends in Computational and Applied Mathematics, 2023 The quantification of torques and moments of inertia of horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine driveline is important to precisely predict the dynamic behavior of the complete system. Initially, this paper presents different models used in the literature for describing torques and moments of inertia of turbine components. A dynamic model of a small hydrokinetic turbine using belt transmission is developed. The model uses the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) for determining the power coefficient of the turbine rotor and considers the inertial effects and dissipative torques of whole system using some of the torque models and moments of inertia described previously. The results for the dynamical behavior of the turbine model are compared with experimental data, showing good agreement. In order to numerically analyze a more efficient drivetrain, the belt transmission is replaced by a planetary gearbox in the dynamic model, and the new results are also assessed. As a result, it was found that with planetary gears, a more compact transmission can be used, reducing the inertial effects, which brings a better efficiency in the starting of the machine and shortening the transient regime time.
