Sustainable Rehabilitation Strategies for Traditional Iraqi Homes: Mitigating Thermal Challenges with Innovative Materials Ali Saad Al-Rubaye, Dhurgham Shamil, Ali Samir, Hussein Kareem Sultan International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning, 2025 The rehabilitation of traditional houses in Iraq is very difficult due to outdated construction systems, environmental conditions, and the high costs of maintenance. The present study explores the use of Izocrete blocks as an alternative construction material for sustainability and investigates their potential. There are several benefits, including low weight, high durability, thermal insulation, and economic efficiency of these blocks.Through a case study, it has been shown that Izocrete blocks presented a 7-C reduction in indoor temperature, along with better resistance to environmental factors.Additionally, compared to traditional materials, construction cost was reduced by 30%, while maintenance cost was 50% lower due to the durability of materials. In addition to shedding light on the challenges of Iraq's housing rehabilitation, the findings also tell us much about the potential of this approach in building a more sustainable urban future for Iraq.
From Decay to Delight: Space Syntax-Based Framework for Sustainable Adaptive Reuse for Iraq’s Heritage Urban Fabric Ali Saad Al-Rubaye, Muna Alsallal, Sattar Jabbar Mansour, Ali Samir A., Hasan Jumaah Mrayeh International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning, 2025 This study investigates the sustainable adaptive reuse of decaying heritage structures in Iraq through the analytical lens of space syntax.Using the Abul Latif Al-Jiblawi house in Samawah as a case study, functional, aesthetic, and syntactic dimensions of its revitalization are examined.Through the application of integration metrics, legibility assessment, and community engagement, a comprehensive framework is proposed that harmonizes heritage preservation with contemporary urban needs. The findings underscore the significance of embracing innovative approaches in revitalizing heritage houses, which also support community identity, and offer practical guidelines for policymakers, conservationists, and architects operating in conflict-affected heritage zones.
Architectural requirement of people with disability in the urban cities in Iraq Ali Saad Al-Rubaye, Hassan Haider Abdulrazzaq kamoona, Hadel Saad Al-Mur'ib Periodicals of Engineering and Natural Sciences, 2019 At the international level, attention is focused on the possibility of integrating people with special needs into their communities in a way that reduces their sense of disability by providing their public needs in the urban environment. The architectural and building codes in Arab societies have neglected the humanitarian considerations associated with this category for a long time, where people with disabilities in Arab societies, especially the Iraqi society, have many difficulties that lead to determining their movement in the urban environment of contemporary cities, which has a negative impact on how this group adapts within these societies and the difficulty of their integration, although the Iraqi government has sought to develop the constitution to support people with disabilities, However, these attempts were just theoretical but do not adopt a real binding application for urban development projects in the current reality of the cities in the twenty-first century , which calls for the introduction of real standards with well-studied dimensions and depends on multiple global standards to provide flexible solutions to transform the urban environment into an environment that can embrace the people with disabilities and provide sufficient flexibility in movement solutions which helps to develop their mental and physical abilities in a series and appropriate manner in the current Iraqi society, therefore the research study includes the following:- • Criteria and requirements of people with special needs in the urban environment to reach the appropriate architectural standards for them. • Experiences and legislation suitable for people with special needs in third world countries and Arab countries. • Architectural foundations are suitable for people with special needs in the Iraqi cities.
