  • Development and Application of Advanced Control Strategies for Nonlinear Coupled MIMO Systems
Alpesh Patel, Dipak Adhyaru, Jignesh Patel
Serbian Journal of Electrical Engineering, 2025
This paper presents the design and implementation of advanced control algorithms for a nonlinear coupled Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system, focusing on the hardware structure of Quadruple Conical Tank System (QCTS). Nonlinear MIMO systems, characterized by complex interactions between multiple inputs and outputs, pose significant challenges for control engineering. The QCTS, with its four interconnected conical tanks, serves as an exemplary testbed for evaluating advanced control strategies. The paper elaborates on the theoretical and practical implementation of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), and Model Predictive Control (MPC), emphasizing their capabilities in managing multi-variable systems with constraints. Additionally, a comparative analysis of MPC with traditional control methods such as PID and FLC is presented. The practical implementation is demonstrated through hardware experiments. The hardware experimental results highlight the strengths and limitations of each control strategy, providing insights into their applicability for complex nonlinear MIMO systems. The findings underscore the superior performance of MPC in handling multi-variable interactions and constraints, making it a robust choice for advanced control applications in industrial processes.

  • Dry waste segregation using seamless integration of deep learning and industrial machine vision
Harsh Kapadia, Alpesh Patel, Jignesh Patel, Shivam Patidar, Yash Richhriya, Darpan Trivedi, Priyank Patel, Meet Mehta
Proceedings of Conecct 2021 7th IEEE International Conference on Electronics Computing and Communication Technologies, 2021
Municipal solid waste management has been one of the most critical issues of urban cities today. Increasing population, constructions, industries, etc. are the major factors creating a large amount of waste that is dumped onto the landfill sites. Various systems have been proposed and are under the utilization for the management of municipal waste which includes mechanical vibration-based size-based sorters, eddy current sensor-based sorting of metallic waste, automatic optical waste sorters, etc. This paper focuses on a novel solution for solid waste segregation using the concepts of machine vision and deep learning. The proposed concept is tested for the segregation of solid dry waste particularly plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and tetra packs. The prototype system developed for the segregations works at high speed and accuracy. The prototype system sorts 250 objects per minute with an average accuracy of 96%. The proposed novel idea be extended and implemented for other types of waste segregation and can include more categories of solid dry waste. The system provides a solution for the ever-challenging municipal waste management problem.
  • Comparative studies of control performance for a nonlinear coupled quadruple conical tank system
Alpesh Patel, Jignesh Patel, Bhavik Patel
    2019 6th Indian Control Conference Icc 2019 Proceedings, 2019
There are many processes with Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO), which are non-linear in behavior. A difficulty arises in designing of controller when system interacting between input-output variables and coupling effects. This paper discusses the performance investigation of the classical PI controller and fuzzy logic-based controllers for coupled nonlinear quadruple conical tank system (QCTS). Experimental comparative analysis of controller’s performance discussed in depth. The fuzzy logic approach is more suitable for the nonlinear system to have interactions and coupling effects.

Proceedings of the International Conference on Inventive Systems and Control Icisc 2017, 2017
Different approaches of communication are available between the Mitsubishi FX-PLC and LabVIEW like OPC, Serial, etc. The communication between the PLC and personal computer (PC) is done using the Ethernet 1E. A MELSEC Communication (MC) protocol of Mitsubishi FX-series Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is introduced and studied. LabVIEW is used as programming software. This communication has been implemented successfully in the supervisory system which is introduced in this paper. TCP/IP is used to establish the connection in the LabVIEW platform for the continuous sending and receiving of the data from the PLC.

2017 6th International Conference on Computer Applications in Electrical Engineering Recent Advances Cera 2017, 2017
Temperature is the most critical parameter to ensure the proper cleaning of beverage containers in bottle washer machine. The requirement and importance of temperature control of different treatment zones of bottle washer machine for small scale beverage industry has been discussed. The sample water heating tank has been considered as the treatment zone of the bottle washer machine. The temperature control of the sample water heating tank with VIPA 315-SB PLC using PID control has been discussed and implemented. Two tuning methods for PID control, namely Ziegler Nichols tuning and auto-tuning have been discussed and implemented. The novel approach for implementation of MPC using OPC server and MATLAB as an OPC client has been discussed and implemented for sample water heating tank system. The comparison between PID and MPC temperature control schemes have been shown in terms various performance indices. The results show that MPC provides better control and better performance compared to PID control scheme.

This novel arrangement of quadruple conical tank system provides multiple process configuration for multivariable input-output. This paper presents the hardware structure of quadruple conical tank, computer interfacing using LabVIEW software, mathematical modelling of system and dynamic behaviour study. Additionally, paper explores the open loop response based parametric analysis for different input and output configurations with various operating points of quadruple conical tank system using linearized model obtained from LabVIEW. Through comparative studies of open loop response in simulation environment and real-time hardware system, the effect of interaction, coupling, time variations and change in dynamic behaviour of QCTS confirmed.

Nuicone 2015 5th Nirma University International Conference on Engineering, 2016
The main motive of this paper is to implement, analyze and compare few standard closed loops PID tuning methods and to develop auto tuning for single board heater system (SBHS) using relay feedback method. For system identification, step test method is used to find out system parameters. Widely accepted PID controller is used to control the temperature of the system with the PID controller parameter values obtained from Zeigler Nichol's tuning method. Better to this conventional ZN, Relay Feedback tuning based PID controller is used, whose main idea was proposed by Amstrom-Hagglund in 1984. This paper also includes implementation of LQR(linear quadratic regulator) controller over linear system i.e. SBHS to reject disturbances with set point tracking, number of analysis and results has been taken for both LQR and PID controller.
  • Design and development of bottle washer machine for small scale beverage industry
Ankur G. Gajjar, Alpesh I. Patel, Raviprakash G. Singh
Conference Proceeding 2015 International Conference on Advances in Computer Engineering and Applications Icacea 2015, 2015
The conventional bottle washer machines are suitable only for medium scale and large scale beverage industry due to their high bottle washing capacity and mechanical and control complexity. This paper proposes the design and automation of the economical bottle washer machine for the small scale beverage industry without compromising its control capabilities. The importance and requirement of the bottle washer machine in the beverage industry has been discussed. The design of the proposed bottle washer machine for RGBs (Returnable Glass Bottles) has been created in the Creo software. The different treatment zones and working of the bottle washer machine has been discussed. The bottle washer machine has been automatized using the Siemens S7-317-2-PN/DP PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and programmed using a ladder diagram in the SIMATIC Manager. The level control for different treatment zones is achieved by means of limit switches and temperature control for different treatment zones is achieved by using Pt1000 RTD, SSR (Solid State Relay) and heater. The different control schemes for the temperature control has been discussed, implemented and compared. The results show that the PID temperature control is the most effective control scheme for the temperature control of the different treatment zones. The implementation of the PID temperature control and auto-tuning of the sample process has been shown. The holistic control of the bottle washer machine also has been discussed and assessed.
