Mangrove soil and vegetation carbon stocks in northeastern Brazil Paula Renata Muniz Araújo, Frans Germain Corneel Pareyn, Ivson Lucas de Santana, Tarcila Rosa da Silva Lins, Aldo Torres Sales, et al. Wetlands Ecology and Management, 2026 Coastal ecosystems, including mangroves, are known as carbon sinks due to their high storage capacity per square meter. Despite playing this vital role, there remains a need for more information on carbon studies in mangrove areas in Brazil. Given this scenario, the primary objective of this study was to quantify the soil and vegetation carbon stocks in mangrove areas of Pernambuco, NE Brazil. The study was conducted in the Ecological Preservation Zone (ZPEC) of the Suape Port Industrial Complex (SPIC). Plots (20 × 50 m) were established for field measurements of tree height, circumference at breast height, and necromass, as well as the collection of necromass and soil samples to a depth of 100 cm. Tree biomass and necromass were estimated using allometric equations. Carbon stocks in tree biomass and roots were calculated using conversion factors, whereas necromass carbon stocks were estimated based on biomass and measured total carbon contents. Soil carbon stocks were determined from total carbon contents and bulk density. The evaluated mangroves stored on average 472.87 ± 128.90 Mg C ha⁻ 1 , with soils representing the dominant carbon pool (87.1% of the total), followed by aboveground biomass, roots, and necromass. Soil carbon stocks increased with depth. Compared to other tropical mangroves, SPIC values fall within the global range and are higher than those reported for other Brazilian sites, underscoring the critical contribution of soils as carbon reservoirs. This study provides one of the few compartmental assessments available for mangroves in Northeastern Brazil, highlighting their relevance as blue carbon ecosystems under anthropogenic pressure.

Geociencias, 2024 RESUMO - As estimativas dos estoques de biomassa vegetal em pastagens utilizando técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, apesar de serem amplamente utilizadas ultimamente, ainda são incertas devido ao padrão tridimensional e desigual de crescimento da vegetação. Foi definida uma metodologia para estimar os estoques de biomassa no semiárido de Pernambuco, Brasil, utilizando uma câmera RGB de alta definição acoplada a um drone. Os sobrevoos foram realizados em áreas de floresta tropical seca densa e aberta e pastagens, nas estações seca e chuvosa. A biomassa medida em campo foi relacionada a nove índices de vegetação do espectro visível por meio de regressão linear múltipla. Os coeficientes de determinação variaram entre 0,73 e 0,82. Os modelos mostraram-se uma forma viável de estimar a biomassa, considerando a amplitude espacial e temporal do estudo, as características da vegetação e os tipos de cobertura do solo avaliados. ABSTRACT - Remote sensing techniques are currently widely used in environmental analysis due to the ability to collect accurate data in a cheaper and easier way than conventional techniques. However, estimates of vegetation biomass stocks in rangelands using remote sensing techniques are still uncertain due to the tridimensional and uneven growth pattern of the vegetation. A methodology was defined to estimate biomass stocks in different land cover types in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco state, Brazil, using a high definition RGB camera coupled to a drone. Flyovers 30 m above ground level were performed in three field experiments, in areas of dense and open tropical dry forest and pastures, during the dry and rainy seasons. Biomass measured in field was related to nine visible spectrum vegetation indices as independent variables, using multiple linear regression. The determination coefficients ranged between 0.73 and 0.82. The models proved to be a feasible way to estimate the biomass, considering the spatial and temporal amplitude of the study, the vegetation characteristics and the types of soil cover evaluated, which could be improved with the addition of more sampling points. We conclude that RGB sensors are promising to estimate biomass in semiarid regions, especially integrated with vegetation indices. Keywords: Geotechnologies. Visible spectrum. Vegetation índices. Revista Brasileira De Geografia Fisica, 2024 Maps of soil and vegetation carbon stock dynamics resulting from changes in land use in tropical dry areas are still scarce and virtually absent for the Brazilian Northeast region. The few data available were built on a scale that does not allow their use for decision-making and precision farming applications. Based on soil and land use data, we developed a geographical information system to estimate and map carbon balances in the large (86.135 km2) semiarid region of Pernambuco state, Brazil. Maps of carbon stocks for soil and vegetation for the years 2000 and 2016 were created on the scale of 1: 100000, stratified by land use and soil types. In this period, 28% of the area had decreases in soil and vegetation C stocks, 57% had no significant changes and only 13% had increases. Most of the change was associated with converting the open native forest vegetation (Caatinga) into pastures. The net C loss was 291 million Mg, representing an average loss of 2 Mg C ha-1 year-1. Water bodies, urban areas, and other unclassified uses were not accounted for but amounted to only 2% of the area. Overall, the method proved to be a fast and feasible approach to monitoring carbon balances derived from land use changes on a regional scale.
Re-seed or not re-seed? Factors affecting rangeland grass-seedling establishment. Review Aldo Torres Sales, Carlos Villalobos González Revista Mexicana De Ciencias Pecuarias, 2024 Las plántulas tienen un papel importante en el mantenimiento de la diversidad, la productividad y los ciclos biogeoquímicos de los pastizales de cualquier zona geográfica. Sin embargo, poco se sabe sobre la influencia de los factores ambientales en el establecimiento de plántulas, así como sobre las diferencias en el desarrollo morfológico entre las especies. Comprender el establecimiento de plántulas se vuelve de crucial importancia para mejorar el éxito de la resiembra en pastizales. Esta revisión de literatura investigó los factores que causan fallas en el establecimiento de gramíneas en condiciones de pastizales. Germinar una semilla de pasto no es un gran problema si exixten condiciones ambientales óptimas. La clave es garantizar la supervivencia y crecimiento de estas plántulas hasta la madurez fisiológica. Los principales factores ambientales asociados con fallas en el establecimiento de plántulas son la humedad, temperatura ambiental, preparación de la cama de siembra, calidad de semillas, entre los principales son. Los estudios revisados mostraron que los pastos anuales tienen mayores tasas de crecimiento, sin embargo, presentan una menor asignación a las estructuras reproductivas en comparación con pastos perenes. Estas diferencias también promueven diferentes tasas de supervivencia de plántulas, con los pastos anuales presentando tasas más altas en comparación a pastos bianuales o perenes. Aparentemente, la causa principal de las fallas de las plántulas en el establecimiento está relacionada con la exploración de suelo de las raíces adventicias. Donde los informes describen que las plántulas emergen rápida y abundantemente en la mayoría de los pastos, pero las plántulas mueren entre las seis y diez semanas de edad. Popr lo que se deduce que la planta puede germinar y germinar las raíces primarias, sin embargo, por una razón desconocida, el pasto no brota la raíz adventicia.
