The COVID‐19 outbreak has caused public and global health crises. However, the lack of on‐site fast, reliable, sensitive, and low‐cost reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) testing limits early detection, timely isolation, and epidemic prevention and control. Here, the authors report a rapid mobile efficient diagnostics of infectious diseases via on‐chip ‐RT‐quantitative PCR (RT‐qPCR): MEDIC‐PCR. First, the authors use a roll‐to‐roll printing process to accomplish low‐cost carbon‐black‐based disposable PCR chips that enable rapid LED‐induced photothermal PCR cycles. The MEDIC‐PCR can perform RT (3 min), and PCR (9 min) steps. Further, the cohort of 89 COVID‐19 and 103 non‐COVID‐19 patients testing is completed by the MEDIC‐PCR to show excellent diagnostic accuracy of 97%, sensitivity of 94%, and specificity of 98%. This MEDIC‐PCR can contribute to the preventive global health in the face of a future pandemic.
  • Fully roll-to-roll gravure printed electronics: Challenges and the way to integrating logic gates

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2022
Printed electronics have been considered to bring about the ICT (Information Communication Technology) revolution. The high-throughput production of the ultra-low-cost printed devices along with the level of integration of logic gates via an all roll-to-roll (R2R) printing method has been the major axes in the revolution. However, there have been certain concerns related to the integration of logic gates via the R2R printing methods. This review paper focuses on the key issues that must be resolved to maintain a uniform threshold voltage (V th) value, which can otherwise impede the commercial viability of such devices. Amongst the various factors contributing to the ΔV th value, the ink rheology, web handling, and the disparity in alignment amongst the drain-source electrodes and the gate electrodes due to the limitations of an overlay printing registration accuracy (OPRA) were reviewed to effectively control the variations during the R2R printing process, without including the material’s intrinsic instability factors. Accordingly, a unique design rule for the R2R printing foundry concept was introduced for manufacturing the devices with the available integration level of the logic gates, incorporating the printing parameters including ink rheology, ink transfer, web handling, and OPRA.

Ultrafast cooling is a newly developing heat treatment technique that can be used for the production of advanced high strength steels. Conventional laminar jet cooling is generally fitted in the runout table; however, it cannot provide the higher cooling rates necessary, and air atomised spray cooling can be the best alternative for ultrafast cooling rates. As water is the commonly used coolant, it is beneficial to know the effect of surface active or volatile additives on the cooling characteristics for high heat flux applications. Thus, this study examines the two aspects of the use of enhancement of air atomised water spray cooling process with a mixture of ethanol and surfactant additives. First, additive based cooling of stainless steel strip was evaluated to optimise the cooling rate, then these optimum parameters were used to study the improvement in mechanical properties and microstructure of medium carbon steel compared to pure water ultrafast cooling. The cooling experiments were carried out at a temperature above the Leidenfrost point of the hot strip. A commercial inverse solver called INTEMP was used for the calculation of surface temperature and heat fluxes. It was observed that the addition of surfactants and alcohol enhanced the cooling rate and critical heat flux of the test strip and has higher impact on martensite phase evolution.
