Are there key characteristics of social enterprises that foster relationships with government, universities and civil society? Jhordano Malacarne Bravim, Ana Carolina Vilela de Carvalho, Andréa Paula Segatto, Rodrigo Luiz Morais-da-Silva Social Enterprise Journal, 2025 Purpose This paper aims to analyze what social enterprise qualities boost the likelihood of creating interorganizational interactions with academia, governments and civil society organizations (CSOs). Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a mixed-method study for the purpose of development. The first stage was a quantitative exploratory analysis of 1,042 sustainable community businesses in Brazil, aiming to identify variables influencing the relationship between social enterprises (SEs) and Quadruple Helix players. The second stage used these quantitative results to guide unstructured interviews with five experts. Findings The authors reveal 30 variables were statistically significant, with nine diminishing the likelihood of SEs forming relationships with academia, governments and CSOs, 20 enhancing such prospects, and one attribute potentially augmenting it for one entity while diminishing it for another. Among the findings, it was noted that the participation of women in SEs is an attribute that facilitates relationships with government and academia. On the other hand, youth participation on the board fosters relationships with CSOs. Practical implications This study will hopefully clarify, firstly for SEs, which players they are most likely to relate to, depending on their characteristics. For academia, government and civil society, reflections are offered that can help develop projects, programs and support for those SEs that seek such support, thus generating a more effective relationship with better outcomes. Originality/value The findings help the advancement of knowledge in the area by investigating a problem still poorly defined, namely, the relationship between SEs and organizations from different sectors. Furthermore, there are still few studies that address the realities of developing countries. As a result, the purpose of this study was to make a theoretical contribution by providing parameters for SEs characteristics that induce relationships with organizations representing academia, government or civil society players, corroborating the need to understand the characteristics that can facilitate the construction of partnerships with social enterprise and whether these partnerships can reduce SEs challenges.
Institutional change in the social innovation process: Evidence from an emerging context Rodrigo Luiz Morais-da-Silva, Andréa Paula Segatto, Indira Gandhi Bezerra-de-Sousa, Gelciomar Simão Justen International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, 2024 Institutional change has been identified as inherent to social innovation proposals, especially in developing contexts. However, it is still unclear how these changes occur in the social innovation process. Therefore, our study seeks to answer the following research question: How do attempts at institutional change occur in the social innovation process in an emerging context? We use the qualitative approach to investigate two Brazilian social innovation cases striving to change the institutional environment in which they operate. Our data reveals that institutional change may be necessary before the scalability stage of the social innovation process. We suggest that this finding is related to the developing context, which requires social entrepreneurs and their teams to break institutional barriers to expand their social innovation initiatives. We have also identified some mechanisms used for the attempts to institutional changes: competition with government organisations, influence in formulating laws, and support for the market growth and the entry of new participants.
Exploring the relationship among ESG, innovation, and economic and financial performance: evidence from the energy sector Alan Bandeira Pinheiro, Graziela Bizin Panza, Nicolas Lazzaretti Berhorst, Ana Maria Machado Toaldo, Andréa Paula Segatto International Journal of Energy Sector Management, 2024 Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of innovation on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and, consequently, its influence on the economic and financial performance of companies. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative and descriptive research was carried out based on secondary data from the Refinitiv Eikon® database, using the panel data regression technique, considering the constructs: innovation, ESG performance and economic and financial performance. Findings The results showed that companies that tend to invest more financial resources in R&D are more likely to have higher ESG performance. In addition, companies that have higher ESG performance tend to have higher economic and financial performance. Practical implications Managers may consider investing more resources in R&D to achieve superior ESG performance. They should be aware that ESG is a strategic tool for creating financial and nonfinancial value for the organization. More than the traditional preparation of a financial report, stakeholders demand another type of information: ESG information. Originality/value The results confirm the basis of Stakeholder Theory, showing that the companies that meet the needs of all stakeholders tend to have greater economic and financial performance. ESG practices can include keeping employees motivated to work, improved corporate image in the eyes of customers, more satisfied suppliers and community and environment aligned with management. Therefore, these ESG initiatives are instrumental in protecting organizational objectives as well as increasing shareholder value.
What drives environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance? The role of institutional quality Alan Bandeira Pinheiro, Joina Ijuniclair Arruda Silva dos Santos, Ana Paula Mussi Szabo Cherobim, Andréa Paula Segatto Management of Environmental Quality an International Journal, 2024 PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the role of the country's institutional quality on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of its companies.Design/methodology/approachOver a four-year period (2016–2019), the study examined the ESG performance of 412 organizations situated in 19 countries. ESG performance was the dependent variable, and the independent variables were rule of law, economic freedom, education index and international trade freedom. These factors described the institutional quality of countries in the authors’ study.FindingsThe findings reveal that institutional quality has a major impact on ESG performance. Companies engage in more ESG practices when they operate in countries with greater economic freedom and international trade freedom. The authors corroborated the core assumption of institutional theory (IT), which argues that organizational behavior is determined by the country's institutional setting.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings, like all research, should be interpreted with caution. The authors’ research focused solely on large energy corporations. As a result, the conclusions cannot be applied to small companies or other industries. ESG performance can also be measured using different datasets.Practical implicationsIf managers want their companies to perform better in terms of ESG, the authors recommend that they form a CSR committee and sign the Global Compact. This study may be valuable to international policymakers because they can underline that greater economic freedom, better education and greater international trade freedom all promote higher ESG performance.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, nearly all of research explores the relationship between ESG and financial performance. As a result, this study built on past research by investigating how national aspects affect corporate ESG performance.
Corporate governance meets corporate social responsibility: evidence from Latin America Alan Bandeira Pinheiro, Joina Ijuniclair Arruda Silva dos Santos, Danielle Mantovani Lucena da Silva, Andréa Paula Segatto, Jose Carlos Korelo Academia Revista Latinoamericana De Administracion, 2023 PurposeThis study aims to examine the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on social responsibility in Latin America.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses were tested using a sample of 371 companies based in eight Latin American countries, resulting in 4,823 observations.FindingsThe results show that more independent boards, with greater female representation and the presence of a sustainability committee lead companies to behave more ethically. The findings indicate that corporate governance mechanisms play an important role for companies to engage in social responsibility actions.Practical implicationsGovernments can use these findings to draft regulations that encourage Latin American companies to disclose more non-financial information and to support a more diverse board composition. The evidence shows that the quality of national governance plays a key role in times of crisis by encouraging more responsible behavior by companies.Originality/valueThis study broadens the scope of application of agency theory and the resource-based view by demonstrating that the board of directors is a unique composition and that organizations must understand how to balance external and internal members on their boards in order to achieve higher social and environmental performance.
How does social innovation generate social impact? Contributions from a meta-synthesis Ronalty Oliveira Rocha, Adriana Roseli Wunsch Takahashi, Andrea Paula Segatto Regepe Entrepreneurship and Small Business Journal, 2023 Objective: To analyze how social innovation actions and practices presented in case studies, generate social impact. Methodology: The meta-synthesis was adopted, which, by identifying empirical research (case studies) and establishing comparative analyses, revealed new possibilities for investigation, deepening and theoretical expansion. Results: The results show the heterogeneity of the concept and actions of social innovation, identify its promoters, driving and/or enabling elements, actor networks, and forms of social impact, and link social innovation and impact to other approaches and opportunities for innovation. Theoretical/Methodological contributions: The study was able to synthesize preponderant elements to reach social impact from social innovation actions, themes little explored in an integrated way. In addition, it explored the meta-synthesis method, reinforcing the application of this research strategy as a tool for building theories and identifying findings that surpass the original conclusions of primary case studies. Originality: Given the differences in social impact detection and measurement, and the lack of a standard for social impact generation through social innovation, this study summarizes empirical findings, categorizes, and identifies aspects and elements that condition social impact generation through social innovation. Social / Management Contributions: In addition to portraying conceptual aspects, drivers and forms of social impact, this study offers a discussion on the integration between driving agents, boosters and networks of actors that can help practitioners of social innovation, public and social managers in stimulating and generation positive results (social impact) from this innovation.
Relevance of the Coadaptation Dimension in Technological Cooperation Fernanda Salvador Alves, Eduardo De-Carli, Andréa Paula Segatto International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management, 2022 Coadaptation is one of the relational capabilities (RC) dimensions and it refers to the ability organizations have to adapt resources to increase the benefits provided by their partnerships. It is in this scenario that this research lies since it aimed to compare the similarities of the coadaptation dimension in cooperations for the development of non-profit (Group N) and profit-oriented (Group P) technologies. Factors such as “adaptation to partners” were mentioned in Group P. However, in Group N, “increased social credibility” was more cited. This research helps deepen the knowledge about non-profit-oriented technologies cooperation and the coadaptation dimension. Future research can discuss similar issues but addressing the other dimensions.
