  • Walking Routes for Marginal Territories: An Unfulfilled Opportunity? A Study in the Inner Areas of the Forlì-Cesena Apennines
Gabriele Manella, Ángel Rodríguez-Pallas, Tommaso Rimondi
    Land, 2026
This paper examines several trends in contemporary tourism: the broadening of the very notion of a “tourist destination”, alongside the growing importance of providing a diversified and territorially integrated supply; the opportunities that tourism may offer to some “marginal” areas; and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which calls for a rethinking of more sustainable and responsible forms of travel, both for the environment and for the people encountered along the way. Tourism related to walking routes and trails appears to benefit from all of these trends, and indeed, this segment has shown clear growth in Italy. The paper then considers the potential and critical issues of this sector in Forlì-Cesena County, with a focus on the nine Apennine municipalities included in the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI). Through an analysis of local tourism promotion websites, a secondary analysis of statistical data, and 19 questionnaire–interviews with local stakeholders, this study examines an area where tourism is growing but remains largely concentrated on the coast. Although the potential of walking routes is confirmed by the various itineraries crossing this area, their actual use and impact on local development still appear limited.
  • Gender and Age in the Travel Choice by Spanish Travel Agency Consumers
Ángel Rodríguez-Pallas, Myriam Yolanda Sarabia-Molina, María Dolores Sánchez-Fernández, José Ramón-Cardona
    Societies, 2024
The tourist intermediary industry has faced multiple challenges to adapt their offers to the heterogeneity of tourists, and understanding consumer interests from a gender and age perspective is considered crucial in the design and marketing of tourist products. The aim of this article is to examine the differences generated by the gender and age variables of consumers of Spanish travel agencies when choosing travel and tourist destinations, focusing on different types of travel, the choice between national and international destinations, and specific destination types. An explanatory quantitative methodology was employed with a hypothetical-deductive approach. A questionnaire was administered to individuals who booked through Spanish travel agencies and a sample of 879 was obtained. The data were analyzed using SPSS 26 software and the main statistical tool was the Pearson Chi-Square (χ2) test. The findings show that gender implies significant differences in travel preferences, with women favoring the exploration of new destinations and men preferring relaxation travel. Age groups impact the choice between national and international travel, but have a lesser effect on specific destination preferences. This research underscores the importance of considering gender and age in understanding consumer behavior within the travel sector, with the aim of developing more effective marketing strategies and catering to diverse customer needs. Within the implications, the growing importance of the older traveler segment should be highlighted, which requires future research and comparisons with the younger traveler segment.
  • Informality and tourist development on the Ecuadorian coast
Myriam Yolanda Sarabia Molina, Ángel Rodríguez-Pallas, Gianella Lissette Vaque Reyes
Managing Tourism and Hospitality Sectors for Sustainable Global Transformation, 2024
The informal economy is a complex phenomenon occurring in various forms and degrees worldwide. In Ecuador, the informal sector represents 46.5% of the economy. This research aimed to analyze the informal trade in the tourism sector of Playas Cantón, Ecuador and its relationship with the regional economic development. A quantitative approach through a structured survey with actors involved in tourism (tourists, residents, informal traders, tourism entrepreneurs, and local authorities) was used during March-April 2023, reaching a sample of 150 participants. Results showed that the informal sector is an essential part of the tourism economy in Playas. Multiple causes/factors drive and sustain it: lack of formal job opportunities, flexibility in working hours, lack of regulation and sanitary control, and insecurity in the area. Implementing policies and measures to address informality is necessary, including formalizing and training informal workers to strengthen regulation and control of informal activities and ensure sustainable development.
  • University training in tourism for people with intellectual disabilities from an edi perspective as an engine for inclusion: The case of Spain
Breixo Martins Rodal, María Isabel Doval Ruiz, Ángel Rodríguez-Pallas
Achieving Sustainable Transformation in Tourism and Hospitality Sectors, 2024
This research analyses the structure of university training offerings for individuals with intellectual disabilities within the Spanish university system. The Spanish territory will be used as a case study due to its tourism strength, as well as the historical ramification of the sector in higher education. Multiple studies on inclusion and tourism have been conducted so far but without a detailed analysis of university training offerings for groups with disabilities. Additionally, a novel research variant is introduced, focusing on the analysis of intellectual disabilities, a group that was marginalized in universities until a few years ago, and within this, the EDI (equity, disability, inclusion) perspective. A compilation and analysis of university offerings oriented towards the tourism sector for this group, the involvement of the private sector and the role of inclusion institutions will be carried out. The research will utilize quantitative and qualitative techniques, including semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders.
