Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Applications of Schiff-Base Metal Complexes Gajalakshmi Balachandran, Aswini Dhamotharan, Kiruthiga Kaliyamoorthy, Kalaivani Sivaramakrishnan Rajammal, Rajamani Kulandaiya, Anthony Raja Engineering Proceedings, 2024 The ligand named 1-(3-chlorophenyl)-N-(pyridine-2-yl)methanimine Schiff base was obtained with the method of mixing 2-amino pyridine with 3-chloro benzaldehyde in methanol as an initial material. Transition metals, like Cu(II), were added to the prepared ligand as a dopant. The molecular structure was characterized by elemental analysis, electronic methods (UV-Visible), Vibrational methods (FT-IR), and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The catalytic activities of the complex were studied using Claisen–Schmidt condensation for the synthesis of chalcone derivatives employed using three different catalysts by an ultrasonication method. The results reveal that the Cu(II) complex showed remarkable catalytic activity and good yield compared to the other catalysts.
Numerical Analysis of Bird Impact Over the Aircraft Windshield C. Ganesan, Sanmik Kondadi, U. Udaymohan, Dalbir Singh, M. Anthony Raja International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems, 2022 Bird impact on aircraft is one of the most important foreign object damages, which result in the reduction in airworthiness. Most bird impacts are not fatal but bird impact can be deadly when the impact is at engine assembly, leading-edge and Frontal area of aircraft. This study focuses on bird impact on windshield and its effects on stress concentration and energy absorption. The strength and stiffness of the windshield play a vital role during foreign object damage. Laminated glass is used as a windshield, the reason to use interlayer is to avoid separation of other layers after impact which ultimately reduces risk to pilot. Laminate configurations glass/PMMA/glass and PMMA/Polycarbonate/PMMA are used for the windshield. Impact analysis has been carried out at velocities of 50m/s, 100m/s and 150m/s. Modeling and solving are done in LS-Pre post and LS-Dyna using a FE-SPH approach. Simulations are carried out impact against bird, stress and energy absorption as the output. Based on results, PMMA/Polycarbonate/PMMA laminate is most likely to sustain the bird strike impact without failure.
Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production from H2S using Nanostructured CNT blended CdZnS/Fe2O3 Thin Film on Glass Substrate M. Anthony Raja, V Preethi, Yash Pal, Naresh Nalajala, Chinnakonda S Gopinath Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2020 A co-precipitation method was employed to prepare the CNT blended CdZnS/Fe2O3photocatalyst. Using the powder photocatalyst, the thin film of CNT blended CdZnS/Fe2O3photocatalyst over a glass substrate was prepared using the drop-casting method. The obtained thin film was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), photoluminescence (PL), and hydrogen production activity studies in order to obtain information on their structural, morphology, chemical composition, optical and hydrogen production efficiency. The hydrogen production activity of catalyst or effective conversion of H2S into hydrogen (H2) and sulfur (S) using thin-film photocatalyst was evaluated using a simulated sulfide solution. The results showed that 1 mg of CNT blended CdZnS/Fe2O3catalyst coated as thin film over glass substrate (4.69 cm2) showed the highest hydrogen production value of 3180 μmol h−1g−1; compared to that of 1 mg CNT blended CdZnS/Fe2O3powder of 2510 μmol h−1g−1. From the above results, it is concluded that the thin film form of photocatlyst produced more hydrogen than the powder form. This is attributed to the effective charge separation and increased specific surface area in thin film photocatalyst.
Theoretical and experimental heat of combustion analysis of paraffin-based fuels as preburn characterization for hybrid rocket Yash Pal, Anthony Raja, Kavitha Gopalakrishnan Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management, 2020 The energy characteristics and theoretical performance of the hybrid rocket fuels are discussed in this paper. Aluminum (Al) and boron (B) metal additives were used to increase the energy density of the paraffin-based solid fuels. To predict the energy characteristics, the heat of combustion was evaluated by adiabatic bomb calorimetry. Theoretical performance parameters such as specific impulse (Isp), flame temperature, and characteristic velocity were obtained with NASA Chemical Equilibrium with Applications (CEA) code. Calorimetric test results revealed that paraffin/polyethylene/boron (P/PE/B)-based fuel formulations exhibited the highest heat of combustion among all the tested fuels. The heat of combustion value of the P/PE/B sample at 25 wt% B loading was found to be 9612 ±16 cal/g and 9293±17 cal/g for the P/PE/Al fuel formulation. The CEA results showed that the addition of Al to paraffin is noneffective in improving specific impulse performance. When B loading increased from 5 to 25 wt% in the P/PE/B, the Isp increased by 47 s compared to pure paraffin. A specific impulse increase implies the possible propellant mass saving. The reduction of the oxidizer and fuel masses may yield increased payload performance for given boundary conditions. The P/PE/B25 formulation has reported the highest value of characteristics velocity (C*) compared to other paraffin-based formulation.
