- 3D micropatterning of PEDOT:PSS/Gelatin conductive hydrogels via two-photon lithography for soft bioelectronics

The mechanical similarity between bioelectronic platforms and native tissue microenvironments is critical for successful cell-microdevice interfacing. Advances in high-resolution microfabrication have enabled the creation of 3D conductive microstructures; however, these approaches typically yield to structures that are electrically active but mechanically stiff relative to biological tissues. In this work, we present a strategy for the fabrication of soft 3D bioelectronic interfaces by blending PEDOT:PSS with a methacrylate-modified gelatin and leveraging two-photon polymerization lithography for micropatterning. Incorporating the conducting polymer into the hydrogel matrix resulted in reduced electrical impedance and exhibited soft mechanical properties both at the macro- and micro-scale. Here, the conductive hydrogel blends have been 3D printed, their versatility was assessed through different geometries and were used for neuronal cell culture. This approach enables the fabrication of soft neural interfaces with biomimetic architectures, using multimaterial blends, supporting improved electrical and mechanical integration at the cell-electrode interface. - Selection of Anode Half-Cells for Hydrogen Peroxide Self-Powered Electrochemical Sensors Using Biomimetic Metal Complex Cathode Catalysts

A one‐compartment, self‐powered electrochemical sensor (SPES) can be created by selecting cathode and anode catalysts, so that the cathode and anode redox reactions do not interfere with each other. Biomimetic transition metal complexes are the most promising cathode catalysts for H 2 O 2 SPES and can be used in conjunction with nickel‐ or silver‐based anodes. However, many aspects of the operation mechanism of SPESs have not yet been explored. This article studies the mechanism and compares the properties of the H 2 O 2 SPESs with cathodes based on iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and Prussian blue (PB) on carbonaceous nanosupports, combined with Ni, Ag, and Ag/AgCl anodes. SPESs with an FePc‐based cathode performed best when combined with a Ni anode in the absence of Cl − anions, achieving a detection limit of 0.2 µM and a sensitivity of −0.197 A M −1 cm −2 at pH 7.4. SPESs with a PB‐based cathode exhibited a comparable performance when used with either a Ni or an Ag/AgCl anode, achieving a detection limit of 6 µM and a sensitivity of −0.101 A M −1 cm −2 at 7.4, when using the Ag/AgCl anode. It was established that the anode oxidation processes contributed to the sensor operation mechanism. The results of the study provide guidance for the selection of cathode and anode materials for the development of H 2 O 2 SPES and enzymatic SPBioES based on H 2 O 2 detection. - Pullulan Coating Preserves High Conductivity in Cable Bacteria Wires

The development of high‐density microelectrode arrays (MEAs) for large‐scale brain recordings requires neural probes with reduced footprints to minimize tissue damage. One way to achieve this is by implementing dense electrode arrays with narrower feedline dimensions, though this increases susceptibility to capacitive coupling between electrical interconnects. To address this, this study explores the resolution limits for high‐density flexible MEAs by optimizing the fabrication using optical contact lithography (OCL) and electron beam lithography (EBL). OCL enables metal feedlines with widths of 520 nm and interconnect spaces of 280 nm, while EBL allows the realization of 50 nm feedlines with 150 nm spaces on flexible parylene C substrates. Based on these techniques, we fabricate a flexible 64‐channel intracortical implant with a miniaturized cross‐section of only 50 × 6 or 70 × 6 µm2. In vivo validation in awake rats demonstrates that the fabricated, high‐density flexible intracortical implants with submicron feedline resolution offer low‐impedance electrodes and reduced crosstalk, enabling reliable neuronal recordings. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of miniaturizing flexible MEAs using a single‐metal layer process, thereby reducing manufacturing complexity in high‐density thin‐film polymer‐based neural interfaces. - Designing Light-Sensitive Organic Semiconductors with Azobenzenes for Photoelectrochemical Transistors as Neuromorphic Platforms

Organic neuromorphic electronics aim to emulate the adaptive behavior of biological synapses using soft, biocompatible materials capable of analog and stimulus‐responsive modulation. While azobenzene‐based semiconductors provide reversible light‐induced switching, their application in mixed ionic‐electronic conductors for neuromorphic systems remains largely unexplored. In this study, photoresponsive organic photoelectrochemical transistors (OPECTs) are engineered by functionalizing PEDOT:PSS with azobenzene derivatives bearing nitro or fluorine substituents. These modifications alter the electronic structure and surface properties of the gate, enabling systematic tuning of interfacial capacitance, a critical parameter governing photogating and neuromorphic response. Optical and electrochemical measurements, supported by DFT calculations reveal that substituent‐dependent modulation of bulk and interfacial capacitance directly impacts gating efficiency. Devices exhibit reversible, analog conductance changes under optical and electrical co‐stimulation, emulating both short‐ and long‐term synaptic plasticity. These results establish a structure–capacitance–function relationship and provide a chemically tunable platform for the development of light‐responsive neuromorphic interfaces in adaptive bioelectronics. - Detecting, quantifying and distinguishing malarial species with surface plasmon microscope
