Tripathy Journal of Composites Science, 2024 The inception of microfluidic devices marks a confluence of diverse scientific domains, including physics, biology, chemistry, and fluid mechanics. These multidisciplinary roots have catalyzed the evolution of microfluidic devices, which serve as versatile platforms for various chemical and biological processes. Notably, microfluidic devices have garnered attention as efficient reactors, offering distinct benefits such as minimized spatial requirements for reactions, reduced equipment costs, and accelerated residence times. These advantages, among others, have ignited a compelling interest in harnessing microfluidic technology for the conception, refinement, and production of various nanomaterials and nanocomposites, pivotal within both industrial and medicinal sectors. This comprehensive exposition delves into multifaceted aspects of nanomaterial synthesis, underscoring the transformative role of microfluidic methodologies as a departure from conventional techniques. The discourse navigates through intricate considerations surrounding the preparation of nanomaterials, elucidating how the microfluidic paradigm has emerged as a promising alternative. This paper serves as an illuminating exploration of the juncture between microfluidic innovation and nanomaterial synthesis. It traverses the transformative potential of microfluidics in revolutionizing traditional approaches, heralding a new era of precision engineering for advanced materials with applications spanning industrial to medicinal domains.
Microorganism-Enhanced Recovery of Zinc from Mining Waste Somanchi Venkata Ramalakshmi, Aradhana Basu, Sankha Chakrabortty, Jayato Nayak Advanced Bioseparation of Industrial Wastes Sustainable Recovery of High Value Metal Ions, 2024 The mining industry has seen significant growth over the past century, leading to an increase in the production of mine waste. Due to the significant release of acids and heavy metals, mining wastes represent a potential source of environmental contamination. Zinc, with an abundance of approximately 78 mg/kg, ranks 23rd in Earth’s crust and is the 4th most widely used metal globally, following iron, aluminum, and copper. A study of the global zinc industry revealed that the price of zinc was predicted to rise from $4.4 billion in 2019 to $5.7 billion by 2024. Increased production and consumption often lead to higher levels of waste generation. By recovering zinc from waste streams like mining waste, industrial by-products, and end-of-life products (ELP), the reliance on virgin resources can be reduced while safeguarding the environment and mitigating the negative effects of zinc mining and manufacturing. For the purpose of nurturing the circular economy, biohydrometallurgy or microbial leaching, an economically and ecologically sustainable method, is essential for extracting metals from waste or secondary products like sludges, ashes, slags, and dust. The widespread application of this methodology underscores its significance in worldwide efforts aimed at achieving green and sustainable metal recycling. It has been established that bioleaching can be used as a substitute to increase zinc production, particularly from low-grade ores and in handling zinc concentrates that are challenging to process using conventional technologies. This chapter highlights the importance of designing and implementing the bioleaching system for metal biomining industries.
Photocatalytic disinfection of multidrug resistant staphylococcus haemolyticus and Escherichia coli using visible-LED: A photochemical approach to curb nosocomial infection Ananyo Jyoti Misra, Aradhana Basu, Arpan Ghosh, Habeeb Rahman A.P., Nitika Tiwari, Amrita Mishra, Cecilia Stålsby Lundborg, Suraj K. Tripathy Environmental Technology and Innovation, 2022 Undeniably, emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) in water borne bacteria is the cataclysmic threat to global public health and may plunge the human civilization back to pre-antibiotic era. With limited technologies proven effective against MDR bacteria, there is an irrefutable need to demonstrate alternative and cost effective water disinfection strategies. In the present study, we have scrutinized the effectivity of Zinc Oxide–Kaolinite nanocomposites (ZnO–K),coated on sodium alginate beads (ZnO/[email protected]) for photocatalytic disinfection (PCD) of multi drug resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Escherichia coli under visible-light emitting diode (LED). Under the same operational conditions, ZnO–K NC is found to have better efficiency than other photocatalysts [ZnO nanoparticles (NP)’s, Kaolinite, TiO2-Degussa P25] and traditional disinfection techniques (chlorination, hydrogen peroxide treatment, iodination, UV-C treatment). Impairment of bacterial cell membrane is supported by observation of lipid peroxidation and leakage of intracellular components to the reaction system. Additionally, fluoresces and electron microscopy established the detrimental effects on membrane integrity. Experimental evidences suggested that the hydrogen peroxide could be the principal reactive oxygen species involved in the PCD of the targeted bacteria. X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy indicated that ZnO/[email protected] beads could be reused for three consecutive cycles which suggests that the process may be explored for real world application to restrict the spread of nosocomial infection.
