In the context of pre-processing – a scenario where galaxies quench their star formation within substructures before falling into clusters – we investigate the impact of environment on the physical and morphological properties of galaxies in compact groups (CGs), focusing specifically on a sample of star-forming CGs (SFCGs). Aims. Our aim is to characterize the physical and morphological properties of galaxies in SFCGs – analogs to the Blue Infalling Group – and understand how the environment influences their evolution. Methods. We used photometric techniques to derive stellar masses and star formation rates (SFRs). Morphological parameters were extracted from DECaLS images, and we obtained parametric properties such as the Sérsic index ( n ) and effective radius ( R e ) using GALFITM and non-parametric indices – including Gini, M 20 , and asymmetry – from the same data. These indicators allowed us to classify galaxies into E/S0/Sa, Sb/Sc/Ir, and merger types. All measurements were compared to a control sample of field galaxies to assess environmental effects. Results. We find no significant differences in n and R e between SFCG and field galaxies, in contrast to results for other CG samples. However, SFCG galaxies exhibit higher specific SFRs than field counterparts. About 16% of SFCG galaxies show merger features and elevated asymmetry. These mergers also present enhanced SFRs compared to both other SFCG types and the field. Conclusions. We propose that SFCGs represent an earlier evolutionary phase of CGs, supported by their lower velocity dispersions and moderate crossing times in addition to the observed SFR enhancement and absence of pronounced morphological transformation. Galaxy mergers in this phase appear to enhance, rather than suppress, star formation.
Near-infrared photometry of the central stars of planetary nebulae with the VVVX survey Dante Minniti, Vasiliki Fragkou, Javier Alonso-García, Daniel Majaess, Arianna Cortesi Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2025 Context. Achieving accurate photometric characterizations of central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) toward the galactic plane is significantly hindered by the high levels of interstellar extinction in these regions. However, near-infrared (NIR) observations offer a more effective alternative, as extinction is substantially reduced at these wavelengths. Aims. By mitigating the effects of interstellar extinction via NIR observations of the Galactic disk and bulge, we seek to improve the identification and characterization of CSPNe in these regions, enabling a deeper understanding of their properties and evolutionary status. Methods. We used NIR photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey and its extension VVVX to define the NIR photometry of a large sample of CSPNe recently identified with Gaia EDR3 data. We explored the optical and NIR properties of all CSPNe in our sample and searched for eclipsing binary candidates among them by employing relevant catalogs. Results. We present a homogeneous catalog of 1274 CSPNe, including their Z, Y, H, J, and K NIR magnitudes and errors. We also include our findings on the photometric properties of our sample. We report 14 CSPNe with a large IR excess indicating cool companions and/or surrounding discs and 56 eclipsing binary candidates. Conclusions. Based on the present VVVX CSPN catalog, we conclude that NIR photometry can prove valuable for further and in-depth studies of CSPNe. Subsequent studies ought to focus on exploring the true nature of the CSPNe that present IR excess as well as eclipsing-binary CSPNe candidates.
Spectroscopic Study of Globular and Fuzzy Clusters in Lenticular Galaxy NGC 1023 M. A. López-Santamaría, Y. D. Mayya, Luis Lomelí-Núñez, L. H. Rodríguez-Merino, Jairo A. Alzate, Arianna Cortesi, P. A. Ovando, D. Rosa-González Astrophysical Journal, 2025 We here report the results from spectroscopic observations of a sample of 26 globular cluster (GC) and 21 faint fuzzy (FF) candidates in the lenticular galaxy NGC 1023 using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Using the recessional velocities and stellar absorption features, we determine that 18 and 9 of the observed candidates are bona fide GCs and FFs, respectively. The majority of the rejected FF candidates are background emission line galaxies for which we determine their redshifts. We used the spectroscopic data to determine velocity, age, metallicity, and extinction of all bona fide clusters. We find that FFs are clearly younger (age = 7–9 Gyr) than GCs (age > 10 Gyr). Both kinds of clusters in this galaxy are metal-rich ([Fe/H] = −0.58 ± 0.33). The ages and metallicities of individual FFs reported here are the first such measurements in any galaxy and agree with the previously reported measurement on stacked spectrum. The kinematical analysis reaffirms that the FFs belong to the disk of the galaxy, suggesting that their progenitors are most likely massive, compact disk clusters that have been able to survive for long timescales. We propose that the fuzzy appearance of FFs as compared to the GCs is a consequence of the dynamical evolution of their progenitor super star clusters in the disks of low-mass galaxies.
Low-redshift Analogs of Cosmic Noon Galaxies as Laboratories for Clumpy Star Formation Jorge M. Santos-Junior, Thiago S. Araujo-Carvalho Astrophysical Journal, 2025 It has been established that a significant fraction of star formation at high redshift occurs in clumpy galaxies. The properties of clumps and their formation mechanisms, however, remain highly debated. In this work we analyze a sample of 18 supercompact ultraviolet luminous galaxies observed with the OSIRIS spectrograph at the Keck Telescope, targeting their Paα emission. These galaxies, although at z ∼ 0.1–0.2, share many similar properties with star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon. We find a total of 84 star-forming clumps with typical sizes of a few hundred parsecs. The star-forming clumps exhibit low values of velocity shear (∼12 km s−1) and high velocity dispersion (∼70 km s−1). The dynamical masses of the clumps are typically higher than the gas masses inferred from the measured star formation rate of each clump. We also artificially redshift our data to emulate observations at z = 2.2 and allow for a direct comparison with other galaxies at higher redshift. Our results indicate that, due to the effects of clump clustering and low-resolution observations, high-z clumps appear larger at greater cosmological distances. This underscores the importance of using low-redshift observations to anchor studies at earlier epochs. Finally, our results support the idea of growing clump sizes in star-forming galaxies as a function of redshift, although not to the scales of kiloparsecs as found by other works without the benefits of adaptive optics or gravitational lensing.

The Fornax cluster, the second-largest galaxy cluster within 20 Mpc, presents an ideal environment for studying the impact of environmental effects on galaxy evolution. Utilizing data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), this study explores the Hα+[N II] emission maps in Fornax and its outskirts. Aims. By mapping emission features across an area of approximately 208 square degrees around NGC 1399, this work aims to identify and characterize emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and analyze their spatial distribution, morphology, and their projected phase space (PPS) diagram. Methods. We developed a dedicated semiautomated pipeline, pixel-to-pixel emission line estimate (PELE), to generate emission line maps by processing S-PLUS images using the three-filter method. A morphological analysis was conducted using the ASTROMORPHLIB package to determine whether Hα+[N II] emitters exhibit perturbed features. Results. The study successfully detected 77 Hα+[N II] emitters with rAB<18 mag, extending to four times the virial radius of the Fornax cluster. PELE demonstrated its ability to recover flux down to ∼2×10−17 erg s−1 cm−2 when compared to Hα maps from MUSE/VLT. Among the emitters, 25% are early-type galaxies (ETGs) and 75% are late-type galaxies (LTGs). Signs of morphological perturbation or merger activity are observed in 44% of the LTGs and in three ETGs located beyond the clusters virial radius. A significant fraction (91%) of the emitters are identified as recent infallers, which are primarily located in the northwestern region of the cluster, while others are associated with the infalling group Fornax A in the southwest. Disturbed, low-mass galaxies at larger cluster-centric distances provide evidence that galaxies begin transforming before entering the main cluster. Conclusions. This study demonstrates S-PLUS's effectiveness in detecting ELGs, whose distribution reflects the Fornax cluster's assembly history; LTGs are linked to recent infall from the field, possibly along a Fornax-Eridanus filament, and ETGs may have evolved prior to entry.

Schoenell Astronomical Journal, 2025 We present the largest sample (∼13,000 candidates, ∼3000 of which are bona fide candidates) of globular cluster (GCs) candidates reported in the Fornax cluster so far. The survey is centered on the NGC 1399 galaxy, extending out to 5 virial radii (R vir) of the cluster. We carried out a photometric study using images observed in the 12-band system of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), corresponding to 106 pointings, covering a sky area of ∼208 square degrees. Studying the properties of spectroscopically confirmed GCs, we have designed a method to select GC candidates using structural and photometric parameters. We found evidence of color bimodality in two broadband colors, namely (g − i)0 and (g − z)0, while, in the narrow bands, we did not find strong statistical evidence to confirm bimodality in any color. We analyzed the GCs luminosity functions (GCLF) in the 12 bands of S-PLUS, and we can highlight two points: (a) due to the relatively shallow depth of S-PLUS, it is only possible to observe the bright end of the GCLF and, (b) at that level, in all of the bands, it can be considered to be the log-normal distribution typical for GC systems. With the spatial coverage reached in this study, we are able, for the first time, to explore the large-scale distribution of GCs within and around a galaxy cluster. In particular, we noted that the GCs might be clustered along substructures, which trace the current cluster buildup.
Galaxy evolution in compact groups: II. Witnessing the influence of major structures in their evolution Gissel P. Montaguth, Antonela Monachesi, Sergio Torres-Flores, Facundo A. Olave-Rojas, Ricardo Demarco, Antonio Kanaan, Tiago Ribeiro, William Schoenell Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2025 Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are an extreme environment for the morphological transformations and the cessation of star formation in galaxies. However, despite initially being conceived as isolated systems, it is now widely recognised that many of them are not as isolated as expected. Our objective is to understand the dynamics of CGs, as well as how the environment surrounding CGs impacts their morphological and physical properties. To achieve this, we selected a sample of 316 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, with a total of 1011 galaxies, and a sample of 2281 field galaxies as a control sample. We find that at least 41% of our sample of CGs are part of major structures, i.e. non-isolated CGs. We find a bimodality in the effective radius (Re)-Sérsic index (n) plane for all transition galaxies (those with (u − r) > 2.3 and n < 2.5) in CGs. Additionally, transition galaxies in isolated CGs populate more densely the Re − n plane for n < 1.75. In contrast, transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs show a bimodal distribution in the Re − n plane, with the n values smoothly increasing towards higher values, and 62% of these galaxies having n > 1.5. This indicates that the majority of these galaxies have already undergone a morphological transformation and primarily contribute to the population of more compact galaxies in the Re − n plane. We find that galaxies in our sample of CGs have a lower mean specific star formation rate (sSFR) compared to the control sample, with non-isolated CGs showing even lower sSFR values, indicating that dense environments suppress star formation. Additionally, non-isolated CGs have a higher fraction of quenched galaxies relative to isolated CGs and the control sample. Based on our results, we propose an evolutionary scenario where the major structures in which the CGs are embedded accelerate the morphological transformations of their galaxy members, and also facilitates preprocessing. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the larger structures in which CGs may be located, when analysing the properties of their galaxy members, as this can significantly affect the evolution of CGs and their galaxies.

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is a project to map ~9300 sq deg of the sky using twelve bands (seven narrow and five broadbands). Observations are performed with the T80-South telescope, a robotic telescope located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. The survey footprint consists of several large contiguous areas, including fields at high and low galactic latitudes, and towards the Magellanic Clouds. S-PLUS uses fixed exposure times to reach point source depths of about 21 mag in the 𝑔riɀ and 20 mag in the u and the narrow filters. Aims. This paper describes the S-PLUS Data Release 4 (DR4), which includes calibrated images and derived catalogues for over 3000 sq deg, covering the aforementioned area. The catalogues provide multi-band photometry performed with the tools DoPHOT and SExtractor – point spread function (PSF) and aperture photometry, respectively. In addition to the characterization, we also present the scientific potential of the data. Methods. We use statistical tools to present and compare the photometry obtained through different methods. Overall we find good agreement between the different methods, with a slight systematic offset of 0.05 mag between our PSF and aperture photometry. We show that the astrometry accuracy is equivalent to that obtained in previous S-PLUS data releases, even in very crowded fields where photometric extraction is challenging. The depths of main survey (MS) photometry for a minimum signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3 reach from ~19.5 for the bluer bands to ~21.5 mag on the red. The range of magnitudes over which accurate PSF photometry is obtained is shallower, reaching ~19 to ~20.5 mag depending on the filter. Based on these photometric data, we provide star-galaxy-quasar classification and photometric redshift for millions of objects. Results. We demonstrate the versatility of the data by presenting the results of a project to identify members of four Abell galaxy clusters in the Local Universe. The S-PLUS DR4 data allow for a reliable assessment of cluster membership out to a large radius corresponding to 5 × r200. The S-PLUS DR4 can be accessed through the survey data portal. All the software used to generate the catalogues for this release and the scientific investigation presented is available in the collaboration GitHub repository. Conclusions. The S-PLUS DR4 consists of a large, calibrated public dataset, providing powerful ways for studying Galactic and extra-galactic objects through an extensive set of (broad and narrow) filters.

Randriamampandry Astrophysical Journal, 2024 Our current understanding of how dark matter (DM) is distributed within the Milky Way (MW) halo, particularly in the solar neighborhood, is based on either careful studies of the local stellar orbits, model assumptions on the global shape of the MW halo, or from direct acceleration measurements. In this work, we undertake a study of external galaxies, with the intent of providing insight into the DM distribution in MW-analog galaxies. For this, we carefully select a sample of galaxies similar to the MW, based on maximum atomic hydrogen (H i) rotational velocity ( v max , H I = 200 – 280 km s−1) and morphological type (Sab–Sbc) criteria. With a need for deep, highly resolved H i, our resulting sample is composed of five galaxies from the VLA Imaging of Virgo in Atomic Gas (VIVA) survey and The H i Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS). To perform our baryonic analysis, we use deep mid-IR images at 3.6 and 4.5 μm from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structures in Galaxies (S4G). Based on the dynamical three-dimensional modeling software 3D-Based Analysis of Rotating Objects via Line Observations (3D-BAROLO), we construct rotation curves (RCs) and derive the gas and stellar contributions from the galaxy's gaseous and stellar disks' mass surface density profiles. Through a careful decomposition of their RCs into their baryonic (stars, gas) and DM components, we isolate the DM contribution by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo-based approach. Based on the Sun's location and the MW’s R 25, we define the corresponding location of the solar neighborhood in these systems. We put forward a window for the DM density (ρ dm = 0.21–0.55 GeV cm−3) at these galactocentric distances in our MW analog sample, consistent with the values found for the MW’s local DM density, based on more traditional approaches found in the literature.
