  • Analysis of Mechanical integrity in power transformer using statistical techniques
    M. Arivamudhan, S. Santhi
Proceedings of 2019 3rd IEEE International Conference on Electrical Computer and Communication Technologies Icecct 2019, 2019
Transformers are key components in a power transmission network and any failure will lead to expensive and life threatening event. Sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) method is a well established approach for determining the conditions of various parts of a power transformer. In this paper an approach for the interpretation of SFRA by the computation of statistical indicators is presented through a simulation work implemented using Matlab software. Further the results are validated with experimental FRA obtained from a 33kv/ 11kv, 10 MVA power transformer.
  • FPGA Realization of FFT and DWT Algorithms for the Detection of Transformer Winding Deformation
    M. Arivamudhan, S. Santhi
Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Control Systems Iciccs 2018, 2018
Transformers play a critical role in power system network. Any fault due to short circuit in nearby network may lead to severe consequences and result in loss of power supply and pose threat to personnel safety. This necessitates manufacturers to concentrate on demonstrating the short circuit with stand capability and is achieved through a special test namely short circuit test that validates the structural integrity of transformers. There is a possibility that a transformer may fail during the test. The failure may take the form of winding deformation axially or radially. In this work a lumped parameter model of a transformer winding is considered and short circuit test is performed through simulation using Matlab package. The winding current computed under shorted secondary condition is analyzed using FFT for deformation detection. Further the application of DWT is demonstrated for feature extraction to identify the type deformation. In order to develop online monitoring of winding condition, FPGA based signal analysis algorithms implementation is demonstrated through a simulation work. This paper presents FPGA realization of FFT and DWT algorithms for winding deformation detection.

IEEE Region 10 Annual International Conference Proceedings TENCON, 2008
This paper aims at describing a method for the detection of winding deformation in transformer based on the measurement of axial leakage flux. Theoretical background for the proposed method is presented from the fundamental principles. The method is validated through experiments conducted on a specially designed jumping ring model that demonstrates winding deformation in a simple and an effective manner.
  • Detection and classification of impulse faults in transformer using wavelet transform and artificial neural network
    N. Vanamadevi, M. Arivamudhan, S. Santhi
2008 IEEE International Conference on Sustainable Energy Technologies Icset 2008, 2008
This paper aims at describing a method for the detection and classification of impulse faults in a transformer winding using wavelet transform and an artificial neural network. The method is explained by considering the lumped parameter model of a winding. The WT decomposes the signal and RMS value of the detailed signal is extracted to train the ANN. The simulation results are satisfactory in detection and classification of faults.
