The spread of COVID-19 pandemic forced the governments to apply severe control measures such as lockdowns and quarantines. This lead to the need for innovative digital health technological solutions to increase the effectiveness of the necessary precautionary. In this regard, a smart geofencing solution is proposed in this paper to effectively support the implementation of COVID-19 self-isolation and control measures in different areas where each intended area is defined as a geofence with specific control actions. The proposed solution is based on a mobile client application that exploits specific wireless metrics for Wi-Fi and cellular networks to generate a digital signature for the defined geofence and detects any violation of its virtual borders. A detailed description along with a mathematical model of how the geofence digital signature can be created is presented. Then, a geofence matching criterion based on a weighted score is proposed to detect the geofence violation by comparing the periodically measured wireless metrics with the created geofence digital signature. The proposed solution can be used for detecting violation in different cases such as distributed home quarantine and controlled areas. The performance of the proposed solution is studied on different scenarios, and the results show the significance of the proposed solution compared to others. Moreover, the effect of the decision time window parameter on the performance of the proposed geofence matching criterion is illustrated.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the whole world is thinking of new mechanisms, preventive measures to protect human life from the widespread of the pandemic. Many countries imposed COVID-19 control measures to limit further infection spread. However, controlling the spread of COVID-19 without taking severe measures (e.g. lockdown and full quarantine) that have undesirable economic effects becomes a major challenge. By exploiting the modern and available information and communication technologies, innovative solutions may emerge to face and deal with this crisis. In this paper, an innovative and flexible solution based on the exploitation and integration of geofencing, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is proposed to enhance the crisis management framework in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed solution is designed to monitor and impose COVID-19 control measures in different environments such as distributed home quarantine, workplaces, service areas, and COVID-19 infected zones.

The worldwide outbreak due to COVID-19 pandemic has led to a great interest in e-learning. However, the lack of suitable online laboratory management systems has posed a particular challenge for sectors that need laboratory activities such as engineering, science and technology. In this paper, the requirements and design for a flexible AI-based laboratory learning system (LLS) that can support online laboratory experimentations are presented. The elicitation of the LLS design requirements is decided based on a conducted survey for a set of LLS features. The LLS is designed with the flexibility to support various types of online experimentations such as virtual or remote controlled experiments using either desktop or web applications. The virtualization technique is used to manage the laboratory resources and allow multiple users to access the LLS. Moreover, the proposed LLS introduces the use of AI techniques to provide efficient virtual lab assistant and adaptive assessment process.
  • Design and Analysis of A Reliable Quadcopter UAV for Wireless Communication Purposes
Nourhan Elmeseiry, Abdullah I. Salama, Nancy Alshaer, Tawfik Ismail
Niles 2021 3rd Novel Intelligent and Leading Emerging Sciences Conference Proceedings, 2021
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used for a wide range of applications, including wireless communication systems, which have the potential to provide cost-effective wireless connectivity for a wide variety of applications. The present UAV models lack the flexibility needed to carry the mission's varied payloads. As a result, appropriate design and analysis of the UAV structure are essential. This work presents a complete design and analysis of a quadcopter UAV for wireless communications purposes, which is carried out using computer-aided design (CAD) tools and techniques. Several design requirements carried out the quadcopter design, and finite element analysis (FEA) methods were used in the approach. Static structural and modal evaluations of the quadcopter structure are carried out using the appropriate material selection in order to determine the design feasibility and durability.

The unprecedented spread of COVID-19 pandemic has become the main challenge for several countries around the world. One of the crucial measures taken to control and manage the diffusion of COVID-19 pandemic is contact tracing. The approach is based on tracing and identifying people who have been exposed to an infected individual to prevent onward transmission by alerting those who came in contact with the positive case; thus, isolation measures and suitable precautions can be taken. By using the communication and localization technologies embedded on the smartphones, those who made contact can be effectively traced by continuously collecting the timestamped locations and contacts of the owners. In this paper, an innovative privacy preserving smartphone-based contact tracing solution named ‘Tracy’ is proposed to help the health facilities to limit and control the spread of COVID-19 especially with the upcoming second wave of the virus. The proposed system consists of three main components: an intelligent application installed on smartphones, a data processing platform, and a website on which the different functions of those parts are integrated to provide the required services for the contact tracing solution. The system is designed to allow individuals to investigate the possibility of them contacting a person infected with the emerging coronavirus. A novel algorithm is designed to determine the effective location points in the individual's routes in which possible contacts can happen and based on these effective points, the prior contacts are decided. The system is also designed to provide an effective communication method with the local health facilities to receive medical advice and precautionary measures required for those who have discovered the possibility of contact with COVID-19. The reliability and scalability of the proposed solution is recognized by the usage of effective contact location points to determine the point of contact with the infected rather than using all the points of the individual's route.
  • Flexible and adaptive testbed for 5g experimentations
Abdullah I. Salama, Mahmoud M. Elmesalawy
Niles 2019 Novel Intelligent and Leading Emerging Sciences Conference, 2019
5G mobile communication technologies with extreme cellular capabilities have gained a considerable attention at both industrial and academic sectors in the last decade. For this, researchers need to experiment different complicated architectures and advanced test scenarios with the help of testbeds. In this context, OpenAirInterface (OAI) has been introduced as an open source platform to implement testbeds for 5G experimentations based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) and general-purpose processors. However, the required manual configurations and operation of different nodes in OAI-based testbeds force researchers to spend more effort and time in building and operating the testbed rather than focusing on testing their new ideas and proposed algorithms. Thus, an innovative management platform is designed and developed to flexibly configure, operate and manage different OAI nodes in a centralized and remote manner. The platform is designed to automatically validate the consistency between different related configuration parameters for different OAI nodes, and adaptively operate different configurations and test scenarios. The operation of the developed platform is tested and its performance is validated using different test scenarios.
  • Experimental OAI-based Testbed for Evaluating the Impact of Different Functional Splits on C-RAN Performance
Abdullah I. Salama, Mahmoud M. Elmesalawy
Niles 2019 Novel Intelligent and Leading Emerging Sciences Conference, 2019
Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) is an innovative concept introduced to enhance the performance of the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks. The main idea of CRAN is to split the functionalities of the ordinary Evolved Node B (eNB) into two main components. The first one is the Remote Radio Head (RRH) that contains the Radio Frequency (RF) functionality in which multiple RRHs will be connected to the other shared component that is called the Baseband Processing Unit (BBU) which performs the other functionalities. The link between these two components will be referred to as the fronthaul interface. This interface has many different technologies in which we are interested in this paper in the Next Generation Fronthaul Interface (NGFI). According to NGFI, various functional splits have different associated tasks to both the BBU and the RRH which impacts on the C-RAN performance. In this paper, OpenAirInterface (OAI) platform is used to implement and conFigure C-RAN testbed. Then, the impact of different NGFI splits on C-RAN performance is evaluated and concluded using the implemented C-RAN testbed in terms of various perfomance metrics such as required fronthaul data rate, percentage of CPU usage, and memory usage.
