  • Bamboo–PCM: Comparative Analysis of Phase Change Material-Impregnated Dendrocalamus giganteus Culm Behavior Exposed to Thermal Variation in Wind Tunnel Assay

    Materials, 2025
The construction industry’s pursuit of eco-friendly materials has sparked interest in bamboo, a renewable resource with exceptional physical and mechanical properties. This study analyzed the integration of Dendrocalamus giganteus bamboo with phase change materials (PCMs) to enhance thermal energy storage in building applications, aiming to improve temperature regulation and reduce energy consumption for climate control. The study compared the performance of bamboo impregnated with an industrial PCM or coconut oil, used in conjunction with a polyurethane resin (PU) coating treatment, assessing their thermal regulation performance against traditional building materials such as ceramic tiles, fiber cement, and metal sheets. From an anatomical perspective, the pores within bamboo culms offered ample space for PCM storage, resulting in a substantial heat storage capacity. Thermal behavior tests conducted in a wind tunnel revealed that the impregnated bamboo samples effectively mitigate temperature fluctuations by aligning them with the PCM’s phase change temperature. Additionally, it was observed that air flow velocity had an impact on this phenomenon. The study concluded that bamboo culms impregnated with PCM hold promise for temperature regulation in construction applications, with variations in airflow exerting an impact on the outcomes obtained.
  • Design of wireless web-based multiplatform system for thermal environmental control of broiler facilities using fuzzy set theory

Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2025
The control and monitoring process for broiler facilities needs to be improved to mitigate or eliminate birds’ thermal stress. Thus, the objective was to develop of a fuzzy controller embedded in a microcontroller and a multiplatform web application that communicates with the fuzzy controller to control the aviary climate system. An architecture based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and agribusiness 4.0 was used to implement a fuzzy controller embedded in a microcontroller. Data were collected by temperature and humidity sensors. A multiplatform web application communicated the climate system to the fuzzy controller. This information was transmitted to the central web server via message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT). The system performed decision-making to control the aviary thermal environment of broilers ranging from one to 49 days old. The input variables of the system were the black globe-humidity index (BGHI) and the bird age. Defuzzification by the center of gravity method produced environmental ratings that were used to control the thermal environment automatically and smartly. Using the intelligent prototype produced a 98% accuracy in the validation process. This low-cost system can be used as an agribusiness 4.0 application to mitigate thermal stress conditions in aviaries and, consequently, reduce productivity losses.
  • Dynamics of the Thermal Environment in Climate-Controlled Poultry Houses for Broiler Chickens

    Agriengineering, 2024
The implementation of poultry houses with enhanced control over environmental variables represents a solution to the growing demands for production and animal welfare. This study assessed the internal environment of dark-house poultry houses for broilers on a weekly basis throughout a production cycle. Data were collected over six weeks, from March to April 2016 involving 40,000 Cobb500TM broilers. A Hobo® datalogger continuously monitored the temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), dew point temperature (°C), and black globe temperature (°C) at 15 min intervals. The indices analyzed included the temperature and humidity index (THI), the black globe and humidity index (BGHI), and enthalpy (H). In the first week, both the THI and BGHI indicated favorable conditions for the birds, with the THI ranging from 72.4 to 80 and the BGHI from 77 to 81.6. Between the second and fifth weeks, the THI conditions varied between thermal comfort and discomfort, from 56.6 to 72. In the sixth week, all indices indicated discomfort, reflecting increased metabolism and population density. The dark-house system demonstrated a feed efficiency of 51%, an accumulated mortality rate of 1.97%, and a total production of 99,873 kg of meat. The study highlights the importance of continuously monitoring and adjusting environmental conditions to optimize production and enhance bird welfare.
