Journal of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2026 - Molecular characterisation and genetic diversity in mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) using SSR markers
KK Sampat, DP Bishun, S Sangita
Plant Science Today, 2026
Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) is India's third most important pulse crop, accounting for nearly 16 % of total pulse area. Mungbean is grown in almost all the states. India is the major producer of mungbean in the world. Mungbean crop diversity and mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) afflicted area has continuously raised since the mid-1990s. Because of its sensitivity to the MYMV, the average yield of mungbean is poor. Mungbean yellow mosaic virus disease (MYMD) is caused by the MYMV, which is transferred by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). Several types of molecular markers have been used for breeding in mungbean, among which SSR markers have rapidly become a preferred type of molecular marker for germplasm analysis because SSR markers are locus specific, highly polymorphic due to their co-dominant nature. In the current study, a total of 12 genotypes were assessed against the MYMV in Kharif, 2021, together with the susceptible control local mungbean. The detection of genetic variation in mungbean genotypes was effectively done using a total of 14 SSR markers. Disease resistance phenotypes and SSR marker analyses showed a good correlation. Phenotypic screening identified nine resistant, 2 moderately resistant and one susceptible genotype (LGG450). Molecular analysis revealed that 12 out of 14 SSR markers were polymorphic, with polymorphism information content (PI values ranging from 0.15 to 0.63 (average 0.38). These findings demonstrate a high degree of genetic variability across various mungbean genotypes, to improve the resistance of the mungbean genotypes to MYMV, resistance genotypes identified to be useful. - Functional evaluation of finger millet mutants developed through gamma irradiation focusing on blast resistance, antioxidant traits and gene expression analysis

PURPOSE: ) mutants through gamma irradiation, focusing on agro-morphological traits, antioxidant enzyme activity, SSR marker-based genetic analysis, and gene expression profiling. This work addresses the challenge of blast disease and its impact on finger millet production and productivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: was evaluated via qRT-PCR analysis. RESULTS: challenge, correlating with enhanced resistance. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the efficacy of gamma irradiation in inducing genetic variability for blast resistance in finger millet. Integration of phenotypic, biochemical, molecular, and gene expression approaches provides valuable strategies for resistance breeding, offering a sustainable solution to manage blast disease. - Gene expression analyses of the calmodulin binding protein 60 family under water stress conditions in rice

Scientific Reports, 2025
Plants have developed elaborate mechanisms for perceiving extracellular stimuli and subsequently activating defense reactions through a multifaceted interaction of signaling cascades. Calcium ion (Ca²⁺), an essential and ubiquitous intracellular second messenger molecules, whose concentration ([Ca 2+ ]cyt) has been observed to rise in response to numerous environmental stresses. The calcium/calmodulin (Ca²⁺/CaM) complex triggers apposite cellular responses through modifying the activities of a varied array of CaM-binding proteins (CBPs). Among CBPs , the CBP60 gene family has been identified as key regulators of stress responses in several crop species. Recently, we have demonstrated the expanded and diversified role of OsCBP60 in rice against devastating pathogens. Here, we analyzed the diversified roles of OsCBP60s in two major abiotic stresses, namely reproductive drought and submergence stress. OsCBP60bcd -2 and OsCBP60g-1/OsSARD1 were consistently upregulated during reproductive drought stress in rice. However, OsCBP60g-5 and OsCBP60g-6 were steadily up-regulated under submergence stress in rice. Interestingly, OsCBP60g-4 was consistently upregulated in both abiotic stresses, except on the third day of reproductive drought. The differential expression of OsCBP60s under water stress highlights the importance of further studying these genes as potential targets for enhancing stress resilience in rice. - Correction to: Gene expression analyses of the calmodulin binding protein 60 family under water stress conditions in rice (Scientific Reports, (2025), 15, 1, (6203), 10.1038/s41598-025-90693-x)

Epigenetics for Climate Smart and Sustainable Agriculture, 2025
Plants acclimatize to drought stress by adjusting physiological, metabolic, and developmental responses to external environmental cues. The ability of plants to compete with repeated drought stresses more promptly and strongly illustrates the concept of drought stress memory. Epigenetic modifications are responsible for the activation of memory genes. A subset of the drought-responsive genes displays greatly elevated expression levels under recurrent drought conditions, due to epigenetic modifications. These memories are meiotically and mitotically heritable in nature and imprinted stress memory helps existing or upcoming generations of crop plants to adjust themselves more promptly during recurrent drought conditions. Repeated exposure to drought stress can lead to stress priming that helps plants’ cross-tolerance to various abiotic stresses. In this chapter, the role of several physiological and epigenetic changes in the activation and development of drought stress memory in crops is explored. - Uncovering key genomic regions for agronomical traits and stress tolerance in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)
