Optical properties of cicada wings covered by graphene studied by nano-Raman spectroscopy Vitor A. F. Torres, André Pereira, Diego Sier, Rafael Nadas, Jane Elisa Guimarães, et al. Journal of Microscopy, 2026 Some biological systems exhibit nanoscale constructions to produce optical effects. This study utilises Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Tip‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) to study the complex bionanometric structure of cicada wings. Topographical irregularities of the wings due to ‐chitin nanopillars hinder the probe's approach to the sample, a crucial step in overcoming the light diffraction limit in TERS measurements. To mitigate this issue, graphene was deposited, promoting surface smoothing and ensuring a reliable TERS measurement. Combined analyses of AFM and TERS mapping revealed a significant enhancement of the graphene 2D band, particularly in the regions surrounding the nanometric pillars, while the characteristic ‐chitin Raman peaks are evident on top of the pillars, clarifying details of how light passed through the material.
Magnetic field brightening of interlayer excitons in twisted-WSe2 M C Godinho, L Liberal, G M Jacobsen, A Ames, F B Sousa, et al. 2d Materials, 2025 Moiré materials offer a versatile platform with engineered electronic structures, enabling the study of exotic quantum phenomena in strongly correlated and topological systems. From an optical perspective, the moiré pattern promotes the confinement of excitons giving rise to novel emissions depending on valleytronic, interlayer, and intralayer interactions. Here, we investigate the excitonic emissions of a twisted homobilayer WSe2 that exhibits a moiré exciton with an intensity that depends on the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the material. Our results suggest that the momentum mismatch ΔK, necessary to couple intralayer bright states from individual WSe2 layers is promoted by magnetic field, giving rise to an interlayer excitonic emission with an intensity modulated by a magnetic field. This study opens new possibilities for manipulating the excitonic states of moiré materials, enabling the exploration of regimes characterized by smaller moiré pattern sizes and the dynamics involving interlayer and intralayer states.
Unveiling composition-properties relationships in Mo1−xWxSe2 alloys: a theoretical and experimental study Ana Carolina Ferreira de Brito, Alysson Alves Pinto, Jan Plutnar, Zdenek Sofer, Gabriel Ravanhani Schleder, et al. Nanotechnology, 2025 Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide alloys have emerged as a versatile platform for electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum applications due to their tunable crystal structure and unique electronic properties. In this study, we investigate the influence of atomic composition on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the Mo 1 − x W x Se 2 alloy, combining experimental and theoretical approaches. Samples with different Mo and W ratios were synthesized and characterized using Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, and atomic force microscopy. Local anodic oxidation was employed to manipulate monolayers within the alloy flakes, revealing significant luminescence enhancement in the engineered islands, suggesting structural and electronic modifications. Additionally, density functional theory calculations indicated that oxidation stability strongly depends on atomic composition, with the Mo 0.5 W 0.5 Se 2 and Mo 0.75 W 0.25 Se 2 alloys exhibiting the highest resistance to vacancy formation. These findings highlight the potential for structural and electronic engineering of Mo 1 − x W x Se 2 alloys, paving the way for advanced applications in nanotechnology and quantum computing.
PDMS—A simple and effective platform for determining Young's modulus of ultrathin 2D materials Luana de Avila, Jan Plutnar, Zdenek Sofer, Bernardo R. A. Neves Applied Physics Letters, 2024 Young's modulus plays a crucial role in determining the suitability of materials for various applications, including two-dimensional (2D) materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides. Traditional indentation methods struggle with ultrathin 2D materials due to substrate effects. To overcome this, we propose using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a compliant substrate for atomic force microscopy force curves. This method, building on a 1950s analytical model, allows for accurate Young's modulus estimates by measuring flake thickness, applied force, and deformation. The results from our approach aligns well with existing literature for various 2D materials. PDMS, commonly used for mechanical exfoliation and transfer, offers an easily measurable Young's modulus, facilitating more efficient determinations. As the range of ultrathin materials grows, this platform enhances accessibility and efficiency in measuring Young's modulus, significantly contributing to the advancement of applications for these innovative materials.
