Promising electrode materials for hybrid supercapacitors Biny R. Wiston, Ashok Mahalingam Energy Harvesting and Storage Devices Sustainable Materials and Methods, 2023 The impending deficit of conventional energy sources like fossil fuels and escalating environmental desolations increase the need to formulate competent renewable energy solutions. With the fast-growing renewable energy market, the demand for an efficient, high-performance energy-storage device is soaring. Supercapacitors are electrochemical energy-storage systems with high specific power and relatively lower specific energy when compared to batteries. Hybrid supercapacitors are emerging device configurations developed via a synergistic blend of battery and supercapacitor, which offers an avenue for realizing high-energy and high-power proficiencies. Electrode materials play pivotal role in determining the supercapacitor device performance. The evolution in nanoscience has presented the prospect of controlling and fine-tuning the physicochemical and surface properties of the materials in the nanoscale to achieve desirable surface-active sites, and related properties. The fundamental concepts and developments in electrode architectures and engineering aspects of hybrid supercapacitors are unfolded. In brief, this chapter offers a perspective on the progress and plausible futuristic electrode materials for hybrid supercapacitors.
Solution Processed NiO/MoS2 Heterostructure Nanocomposite for Supercapacitor Electrode Application Dhivyaprasath Kasinathan, Praveena Prabhakar, Preethi Muruganandam, Biny R. Wiston, Ashok Mahalingam, Ganesan Sriram Energies, 2023 Metal oxide and metal dichalcogenide heterostructure composites are promising candidates for electrochemical use. In this study, a hybrid heterostructure composite electrode material was made using a straightforward hydrothermal process using transition metal oxide (NiO) and metal dichalcogenide (MoS2). The surface of the flower-like structured MoS2 was grown with granular structured NiO, and this heterostructure composite exhibited considerably improved specific capacitance when compared to the pure NiO and MoS2 materials. The pseudocapacitive performance was effectively supported by the heterostructure combination of transition metal oxide (TMOs) and metal dichalcogenide (MDC), which greatly improved ion transport within the material and storage. At a current density of 1 A/g, the prepared heterostructure composite electrode material exhibited a specific capacitance of 289 F/g, and, after 2000 cycles, the capacitance retained 101% of its initial value. The symmetric device was constructed and put through tests using LED light. This finding opens up a new avenue for the quickly increasing the field of heterostructure materials.
