Electrochemical Storage and Flexibility in Transfer Capacities: Strategies and Uses for Vulnerable Power Grids Gustavo Adolfo Gómez-Ramírez, Luis García-Santander, José Rodrigo Rojas-Morales, Markel Lazkano-Zubiaga, Carlos Meza Energies, 2024 The integration of renewable energy sources into electrical power systems presents enormous challenges in technical terms, especially with energy storage. Battery electrochemical storage systems (BESSs) are becoming a crucial solution for reducing the intermittency of renewable energy supply and enhance the stability of power networks. Nonetheless, its extensive implementation confronts constraints, including expense, life expectancy, and energy efficiency. Simultaneously, these technologies present prospects for improved energy management, increase the hosting capacity of renewable energy, and diminish reliance on fossil fuels. This paper investigates the obstacles of integrating electrochemical storage into electrical power systems, explores solutions to use its promise for creating more resilient and sustainable grids, and presents a method for the size estimation and strategic allocation of electrochemical energy storage systems (EESSs). The aim is to improve grid voltage profiles, manage demand response, increase the adoption of renewable energy resources, enhance power transfer among various areas, and subsequently improve the stability of a power system during large disturbances. The methodology utilizes a multi-stage optimization process based on economic considerations supported by dynamic simulation. This methodology was tested employing a validated dynamic model of the Interconnected Electrical System of the Central American Countries (SIEPAC). The system experienced multiple significant blackouts in recent years, primarily due to the increasing amount of renewable energy generation without adequate inertial support and limited power transfer capabilities among countries. Based on the results of using the technique, EESSs can effectively lower the risk of instability caused by an imbalance between power generation and demand during extreme situations, as seen in past event reports. Based on economical constraints, it has been determined that the cost of installing EESSs for the SIEPAC, which amounts to 1200 MWh/200 MW, is 140.91 USD/MWh.
Analysis of Bifacial Photovoltaic System Configurations for Enhanced Grid Integration: A Case Study of Costa Rica's Load Demand Profile Hugo Sánchez, Gustavo Gómez-Ramírez, Carlos Meza, Ralph Gottschalg Proceedings of the IEEE Central America and Panama Convention Concapan, 2024 Decarbonizing electricity generation is crucial for achieving sustainable development. In this context, photovoltaic (PV) technology plays a vital role because of its technological maturity and widespread adoption among stakeholders. Currently, the design of PV systems focuses on maximizing the energy conversion of PV modules. However, as the integration of PV systems increases, a paradox arises: while there is a need to inject more renewable energy into the grid, the mismatch between generation and demand creates challenges for grid integration.Reducing the cost of PV power generation could facilitate the integration of more electricity into the grid by allowing a compromise in production. This approach could enable more efficient use of generated energy and better grid integration. Therefore, this study presents an introductory sensitivity analysis through computational simulations exploring various orientations (azimuth and tilt angles) for bi-particle photovoltaic systems and their corresponding impact on grid integration. This exercise was conducted using the load demand profile for Costa Rica in 2023. Using this analysis, it was found the theoretical maximum PV capacity to be installed in Costa Rica is around 2GWp. Also it is found that the better utilization of the PV generation occurs for lower tilt angle with some not wide penetration for vertical bifacial systems.
Enhancing Photovoltaic Module Fault Detection and Diagnosis Skills through Experiential Learning Carlos Meza, Brian Azzopardi, Bernhard Kubicek, Ana Gracia Amillo, Melodie de l’Epine, et al. IEEE Pes Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe Isgt Europe 2024, 2024 Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) techniques play an essential role in optimising the performance and reliability of photovoltaic (PV) modules, given that they allow the understanding of the degradation process in PV module technology. Conducting outdoor inspections of PV modules is the preferred method for fault identification due to its practicality and efficiency. This paper presents an experiential learning activity for university students to introduce them to photovoltaic module fault detection and diagnosis techniques. The experiential learning activity, conducted as part of the PROMISE project's Advanced School, focuses on three fault identification techniques—thermography, electroluminescence, and UV fluorescence. Through hands-on activities, students are exposed to these techniques, enhancing their skills in detecting and diagnosing faults in PV modules. The paper concludes by highlighting the pedagogical benefits of experiential learning in PV reliability, contributing valuable insights into fault detection principles and enhancing critical thinking skills among students.
