Photographic and Statistical Evaluation of 100 Upper Lip Lift Surgeries Daniela Veloso Santos Sousa, Ricardo Vieira Camargo, Maria Tereza Scardua Mariano, Bruno Santos Vicente, Tarley Eloy Pessoa de Barros, et al. Face, 2026 Background: Surgical techniques for upper lip lift are widely discussed in the literature. However, many questions remain about the influence of sex, age, and ethnicity on the indication for surgery and patient selection. Aim: To verify whether the variation in the number of pixels in digital photographs in the subnasal region, before/after upper lip lift, correlates with the variables sex/age/ethnicity. Methods: Standardized frontal photographs were analyzed from patients who underwent upper lip lift surgery through the Bull Horn Technique. Four linear distances were measured in pixels before and after surgery to quantify dimensional changes. Recovery patterns were assessed across 4 postoperative intervals (0, 7, 10-50, and 60-100 days). Nonparametric tests (Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis H, Spearman’s correlation, and Pearson’s correlation) were used for subgroup analyses to evaluate associations among age, sex, ethnicity, and recovery time. Results: Digital pixel-based measurements revealed that 3 upper lip distances decreased after surgery, while upper lip height increased. The mean percentage increase in upper lip height was greater in men (72.62%) than in women (46.67%). No significant differences were found between sexes ( P > .05), nor correlations between recovery time and age ( P = .6984), sex ( P = .3157), or ethnicity ( P = .0910). Descriptive data indicated that postoperative dimensional variation decreased with aging, suggesting reduced soft-tissue responsiveness over time. Conclusion: Pixel-based measurements suggested reduced tissue adaptability with aging, highlighting the clinical relevance of age and lifestyle factors in postoperative recovery.
Ultrasonographic Analysis of the Subcutaneous Tissue of the Middle Third of the Face and Its Influence on Diagnosis for Bichectomy Nayana Lis Costa Surlemont, Nayara Thais de Oliveira Costa, Tânia de Carvalho Rocha, Sergio Eduardo Inojosa Caraballo, Marilia de Oliveira Coelho Dutra Leal, et al. Face, 2026 The primary complaint of patients who require bichectomy surgery is primarily related to facial esthetics, which should be considered in conjunction with the surgeon’s clinical analysis of the face. Studies are needed to evaluate the parameters associated with the buccal fat pad (BFP) volume, since there may be an erroneous indication for surgical intervention, which occurs due to the impossibility of clinically evaluating the facial anatomical layers that may be responsible for the increase in the volume of the middle third of the face, not just the BFP. This study aims to investigate whether the thickness of the subcutaneous tissue (ST) affects the excess volume in the middle third of the face. Data from ultrasound (US) measurements (volume of the buccal portion of the BFP and average thickness of the ST), as well as the age and sex of a sample of 28 patients, were extracted. The results of the statistical tests showed that there was no significant difference between the volumes of BFP right and BFP left ( P = .678), as well as no significance between ST right and ST left ( P = .088), indicating symmetry between the 2 sides of the individuals in the sample. When cross-testing between BFP and ST values on each side of the patients, it was possible to obtain some results: ST did not show a significant correlation with age, while the right BFP showed a weak tendency for a negative correlation with age; it is concluded that the volume of the middle third of the face is also related to the thickness of the ST, with US analysis being a complementary diagnostic method for indicating bichectomy.

Oral and craniomaxillofacial syndromes and disorders: the person behind the name Ricardo Grillo, Adalmir Queiroz, Jeová Júnio, Claudio Jodas, Rubens Teixeira Bulletin of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2024 Objectives: A syndrome is a correlated set of medical signs and symptoms. This study seeks to develop a nonexhaustive list of biographies of medical eponym. Researchers who originally described and named oral and raniomaxillofacial syndromes and disorders have contributed widely used figures. Methods: The authors searched Pubmed for names of researchers in quotation marks, one by one. Two websites, a medical name dictionary and a free encyclopedia were taken over to expand the author´s data. The original work and the ear of publication were communicated to each author. Results: A list of 20 biographies was compiled that were relevant to 18 distinct oral and craniomaxillofacial syndromes or disorders was compiled and sorted by year of publication. Conclusions: The use of medical names is not necessary for anatomical applications alone. Syndromes and disordersare better communicated when medical eponyms are used. The authors believe that namesake on this topic will not stop being used.
Evaluation of Influence of Arthroscopy on the Range of Mandibular Movements Based on Medical Records Adilson Chaves dos Santos, Marilia de Oliveira Coelho Dutra Leal, Sarah Teixeira Costa, Elda Ribeiro Santos, Rubens Gonçalves Teixeira, et al. Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2023 The Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome (TJDS) is a group of pathologies that affect the temporomandibular joint, mastication muscles, and attached structures, 1 of the leading causes of orofacial pain. Arthroscopy is a technique used as a method of treatment for TJSD. This was a retrospective cohort study, and data were collected from the medical records of patients with TJDS. The diagnosis of TJDS was established based on computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging tests, and clinical examination. All patients, who underwent arthroscopy, were operated on by the same surgeon in 2020. The variables analyzed in this study were: maximum mouth opening, laterality, and protrusion of patients undergoing arthroscopy at time intervals of 30, 90 days, and 6 months after surgery. Data from anamnesis of the medical records and findings on clinical examination were used to verify whether there was any correlation with good postoperative evolution. Afterward, these data were compared and submitted to statistical analysis (Wilcoxon (nonparametric and paired) and Mann-Whitney (nonparametric, unpaired) tests) to verify the degree of correlation between them. It could be concluded that in this sample, arthroscopy reduced the degree of pain in patients, increased mouth opening amplitude, and did not influence laterality and protrusion. The use of previous medication was correlated with a slight decrease in postoperative pain; patients who had undergone previous orthodontic treatment showed better results regarding maximum mouth opening without pain; patients who had previously felt pain on professional palpation had greater maximum mouth opening with and without pain after arthroscopy, and patients with noise at professional auscultation had greater maximum mouth opening without pain. Further studies should be conducted, with larger samples, associated with complementary exams (computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance) before and after arthroscopy.
PECULIAR FEATURES AND SURGICAL APPROACH IN SYNDROMES WITH MAXILLOFACIAL IMPLICATIONS: A CASE SERIES AND UPDATED REVIEW Ricardo Grillo, Luciano Pereira Madruga, Jeová Clementino de Almeida Júnior, Agnelo Lucamba, Claudio Roberto Pacheco Jodas, et al. Bulletin of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2023 Objectives: This paper aims to discuss some important aspects of surgical planning and treatment of some syndromes with maxillofacial implications. Methods: A case series of five different syndromes with maxillofacial implications was reported. We searched MEDLINE for a surgical approach to these maxillofacial syndromes. PROCESS guidelines have been adopted for the current case series. A Pearson correlation test was performed and considered significant only with a 95% confidence interval. Discussion: The number of publications on the subject of maxillofacial surgery is not related to the incidence of the reported syndromes. Surgical planning and treatment have been discussed in cases of Eagle´s syndrome, Jacob´s disease, Crouzon syndrome, Cleidocranial dysplasia, and Goldenhar syndrome. A brief report of the features of the syndrome and surgical procedures involved were evaluated. Conclusions: Styloidectomy and coronoidectomy are considered the best treatments for Eagle´s syndrome and Jacob´s disease, respectively. For some syndromes, tailored surgical treatment is essential. Some data must be considered in surgical planning and treatment. Depending on one characteristic or another, the surgical procedure can be chosen.
