Abstract The aim of this study is to explore the nexus among CO2 emissions, energy use, and GDP in Russia using annual data ranging from 1970 to 2017. We first conduct time-series analyses (stationarity, structural breaks, and cointegration tests). Then, we present a new D2C algorithm, and we run a Machine Learning experiment. Comparing the results of the two approaches, we conclude that economic growth causes energy use and CO2 emissions. However, the critical analysis underlines how the variance decomposition justifies the qualitative approach of using economic growth to immediately implement expenses for the use of alternative energies able to reduce polluting emissions. Finally, robustness checks to validate the results through a new D2C algorithm are performed. In essence, we demonstrate the existence of causal links in sub-permanent states among these variables. - Evaluating the driving factors and performance of OPEC member countries in transitioning to renewable energy towards climate change mitigation

ABSTRACTThe profound consequences of ecological degradation on humanity's well‐being are a severe matter acknowledged globally. This study examines the impact of ecological degradation on green development efficiency in less developed countries. A dataset from 1990 to 2020 was used to break down the impacts of ecological degradation on green development efficiency. Green development efficiency was calculated based on the epsilon‐based measure model, while the dynamic change of green development efficiency was explored with the Global Malmquist‐Luenberger Index model. The panel‐corrected standard errors (PCSE) and feasible generalised least squares (FGLS) models are conducted to test the influence of ecological degradation on green development efficiency. The results show that ecological degradation inhibits green development efficiency, whereas green FDI, urbanisation, and economic growth benefit the increase of green development efficiency. In addition, government intervention shows a negative correlation with green development efficiency. The results of the spatial Durbin model (SDM) of green development efficiency also demonstrate an overall strong negative spatial spillover effect on local and neighbouring regions, with more significant effects at levels of the surroundings. - The Impact of Social Investment and Green Finance on Sustainable Development: Evidence From Emerging Market Economies

ABSTRACTThis study examines how social investment and green finance affect sustainable development (SDE) in 16 emerging market economies from 2014 to 2022. Truncated regression, Prais‐Winsten regression, and single‐equation instrumental variables (IV) regression models were applied for the empirical analysis. The findings reveal that social investment and green finance have positive effects, whereas poverty and ecological footprint negatively affect SDE. Social investment reduces the negative impact of poverty on SDE by enhancing human development and reducing economic vulnerability, confirming the moderation impact. The Juodis‐Karavias‐Sarafidis (JKS) panel's non‐causality analysis confirms the causal relationship between variables. This study recommends that emerging markets allocate more resources for social and green initiatives and limit their consumption of natural resources to avoid the negative consequences of a high ecological footprint. This study implies that doing and going green is essential for meeting sustainability challenges in the post‐modern era in emerging market economies. - An artificial neural network experiment on the prediction of the unemployment rate

ABSTRACTThe objective of this article is to investigate the impact of happiness on environmental degradation utilizing annual data for 36 OECD nations from 2005 to 2021. To achieve this goal, GMM, Driscoll–Kray, and MMQR methodologies were employed. According to the empirical findings, happiness serves as a crucial variable in mitigating environmental degradation. Moreover, the investigation probed into the impact of income, technological advances, democracy, population, and renewable energy consumption on environmental degradation. The outcomes indicate that the EKC hypothesis holds for OECD countries that technological innovations, democracy, and renewable energy consumption have a mitigating impact on environmental degradation. In contrast, population growth, a factor that exacerbates environmental degradation, should be a cause for concern. - Building economic stability through effective natural resource management and renewable energy investment in GCC countries

This study analyses the relationship between non-performing loans (NPLs) and innovation systems at a global level. The data were obtained from the World Bank and the Global Innovation Index over the period 2013–2022 for 149 countries. The k-means algorithm was used to verify the presence of clusters in the data. Since k-means is an unsupervised machine-learning algorithm, we compared the Silhouette coefficient with the Elbow method to find an optimization. The results show that the optimal number of clusters is three, as suggested using the Elbow Method. Furthermore, a panel data analysis was conducted. Results show that the level of NPLs is positively associated with cultural and creative services exports as a percentage of total trade and innovation input sub-index and negatively associated with the Hirsch Index, ICT services exports as a percentage of total trade, ICT services imports as a percentage of total trade, and information and communication technologies. - Co-Movement Among Electricity Consumption, Economic Growth and Financial Development in Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain: A Wavelet Analysis

The aim of this paper is to examine the connections among time-frequency dependencies associated with electrical power consumption (EPC), economic growth, and financial development (FD) in Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain during the period 1970–2014. Using monthly data collected from the World Bank (WB) and Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), the wavelet analysis is applied, which allows for assessing the co-movement between these variables. As a first step, a classical time-domain approach is used to alternatively test the connection, including unit-root tests and cointegration. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between EPC, economic growth, and FD, we employ Wavelet Transform Coherency (WTC) and Partial Wavelet Coherency (PWC) to explore both their temporal and phase-based dynamics. The main findings show that EPC leads FD, but in the short term, and periods dominated by economic stagnations and political crises. Otherwise, FD drives EPC in the medium term, under economic expansion periods. In both cases, economic growth is crucial, being a strong binding force of the interaction between EPC and FD. The difference in the applied results provides alternative policy implications, justifying the use of the wavelet approach. - Exchange rate pass-through at high and low frequencies in Turkey: a continuous wavelet transform model approach

AbstractThis paper investigates the effect of the exchange rate on prices through wavelet analysis for the period 2010:01-2019:12 in Turkey. The Wavelet Transform outcomes reveal that at a higher frequency, an upsurge in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is associated with an increase in the exchange rate, for the period 2011:03-2013:12, and an increase in the exchange rate is accompanied by a higher CPI during the 2015:02-2018:10 period. Moreover, at a lower frequency, an increase in CPI is accompanied by a rise in the exchange rate during the 2014:01-2017:12 period. These results highlight that the pass-through effect is empirically confirmed in Turkey. PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the influence of air and rail transportation on pollution in Turkey from 1970 to 2020.Design/methodology/approachFourier Autoregressive Distributive Lags (ADL) and Fourier Fractional ADL cointegration tests (Banerjee et al., 2017; Ilkay et al., 2021) are employed to analyze the relationship be-tween the variables. Cointegration tests that take into account soft transitions under structural changes are implemented. Structural change issues are crucial for this topic since the changes in countries’ environmental policies and transportation habits are shaped by the decisions taken in relation to environmental regulations. Finally, for robustness purposes, we tested the estimated equation with a completely different methodology. Thus, a Machine Learning (ML) analysis is conducted, through a Ridge Regression (RR).FindingsThe findings obtained by applying Fourier Autoregressive Distributive Lags (FADL) and Fourier Fractional ADL cointegration tests, which can control for structural changes, reveal the existence of a long-term relationship between the variables. In addition, FMOLS estimates emphasize that economic growth and air transport can lead to increased pollution in the long run, while rail transport reduces it. Moreover, the statistically significant trigonometric terms indicate the existence of a smooth structural change among the variables. Robustness checks are performed through a Machine Learning (ML) analysis, which roughly confirms the previous results.Originality/valueTo our knowledge, existing research in Turkey focuses mainly on road transport, while the impact of rail and air transport on pollution has not yet been investigated. As such, this study will be a significant addition to the academic literature.
