• Utility of individualised homoeopathic medicines in improving social interaction in childhood autism: A prospective, open-label, single arm study
Sreeja Kudukayil Radhakrishnan Nair, Deepthi Gilla, Mohan Narvelil Devasia
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy, 2024
Background: Childhood autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. There has been an upsurge in its prevalence in past few decades. The social deficit is the most disabling symptom of autism. There is an immediate need to explore new interventions to effectively address childhood autism. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the usefulness of individualised homoeopathic medicine in improving social interaction in childhood autism. Materials and Methods: This one-year duration study was conducted in the outpatient department of the National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam, Kerala. Thirty-five children fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of childhood autism (as per ICD 10-F84.0) were enrolled. Individualised homoeopathic medicines were prescribed in centesimal potencies following homoeopathic principles. Subjects were assessed by using Indian scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA) and Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) at baseline and every month up to one year. The outcome was analysed using Friedman test. Results: Median scores of ISAA and VSMS at baseline were 132 and 39 which were improved to 35.5 and 56, respectively, at the end of the study. There was a marked reduction in the total ISAA score of 34 patients (statistically significant with p < 0.001). The change of median scores from baseline of social relationship and reciprocity domain of ISAA, Social quotient improved from 41.5 to 10 and 32.8 to 82.7, respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Individualised homoeopathic medicines are useful in improving social interaction in the cases of childhood autism. A controlled clinical trial is suggested as the arena of future research.
• Homoeopathy in bipolar affective disorder: A review of research evidence
Deepthi Gilla, K.P. Deepak, Sreeja KR Nair, K.C. Muraleedharan
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy, 2024
Background: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is an episodic, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by fluctuations in mood state and energy. It affects more than 1% of the world’s population. BPAD causes cognitive and functional impairment and raised mortality, particularly death by suicide. At present, although alternative therapies are not the first-line treatment of mood disorders, there is emerging evidence showing that such treatments are effective. Objective: The objective of this review is to synthesize existing research evidence and literature to determine the usefulness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of manic and depressive episodes of BPAD. Materials and Methods: Two authors performed the review processes independently. Articles published on BPAD between 2000 and 2022 in the English language in various peer-reviewed journals were included in the review. A comprehensive search using keywords was done in electronic databases, such as PubMed and Science Direct. The rubrics in the synthesis repertory corresponding to the diagnostic criteria as per the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases for Mania and Depression were repertorised to arrive at a group of homoeopathic medicines and their indications are discussed in detail. Results: A total of three articles were identified on BPAD and Homoeopathy. The most probable medicines indicated for the manic episode were Agaricus muscarius, Anacardium, Belladonna, Hyoscyamus, Lachesis, Stramonium, Tarantula hispanica and Veratrum album. Conclusion: There is a scarcity of literature to draw any conclusion on the role of Homoeopathy in BPAD. Prospective, controlled trials are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of BPAD.
• Can the sweet pills restore the smiles of autistic children?
Deepthi Gilla, K.C. Muraleedharan
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy, 2023
The second of April marks World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), every year globally. WAAD was designated by the United Nations in 2007 to help end stigmatization and discrimination against those with Autism and their caregivers. It aims to raise understanding and awareness of this global health issue at all levels of society. The alarming increase in prevalence (1 in 100-WHO) and potentially lifelong disabling nature of the disorder demands awareness as early identification and intervention are pivotal in the management of Autism.
• Homoeopathy for Reducing Disruptive Behavioural Symptoms in Children with Conduct Disorder-A Case Series.
Deepthi Gilla, Karunakara Moorthi Sanjeevi, Sreeja KR, Sreelakshmy SR
International Journal of High Dilution Research, 2023
Background: Conduct disorder (CD) and associated antisocial behaviour is one of the most common behavioural problems in children and young people that lead to considerable burden for the patients themselves, their family and society. There is scarcity of literature for effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in childhood psychiatric disorders such as CD. Summary of cases: 10 children diagnosed as CD, five each from Child psychiatry OPD and Peripheral camp at a Children’s home were treated with individualized homoeopathic medicines. All the cases were assessed at baseline and successive visits with Conduct Disorder Rating Scale (CDRS)- Parent version and the results are summarized. There was a marked reduction of disruptive behaviour and improvement in the general condition of the children. Conclusion: The analysis of 10 cases generates a preliminary evidence for usefulness of individualized homoeopathic medicines in the management of CDs. Studies with appropriate designs are indispensable to corroborate the evidence.
• A Scoping Review of the Literature on Homoeopathy in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Deepthi Gilla, Sreeja KR, Sreelakshmy SR, Rajakumar BSJ
International Journal of High Dilution Research, 2023
Background: Emotional and behavioural disorders are very common in childhood and adolescence. Homoeopathy is an alternative system of medicine which has a potential role in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP). Objectives: To identify, summarize and disseminate research findings that could assess the role of Homoeopathy in CAP. Materials and Methods: Two electronic databases PubMed and Google scholar are searched for publications on childhood behavioural disorders in peer-reviewed, indexed journals. Articles published on Homoeopathy and CAP in the past two decades i.e from 2000 to 2020 are included. An explicit systematic search strategy included web-based key word searches. The collected information has been collated, summarized, and the results are presented in tables and charts according to key themes. Results: The research studies varied widely in all aspects such as design, conduct, intervention and outcome reporting. 38 eligible studies are identified on different clinical conditions in CAP. Individual sources of data are critically appraised and findings are discussed in terms of implications for gaps in research. Conclusions: There is limited yet convincing evidence for usefulness of Homoeopathy in CAP disorders such as Autism and ADHD. Our review emphasises the paucity of studies in other CAP disorders such as Intellectual disability, Learning disability, Conduct disorder, Childhood depression and Anxiety disorders etc. which is the domain of future research.
• Role of Carcinosinum in autism spectrum disorder - A case series
Sreeja K R Nair, Deepthi Gilla, Mohan N Devasia
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy, 2022
Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder having the potential to cause lifelong disability. Individualised homoeopathic remedies are found to be safe and effective in the management of ASD. Cases Summary: Three cases of ASD treated with Carcinosinum at the Child psychiatry unit of the National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam are presented to show the action of this nosode in ASD. Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA), an indigenous tool, was used for the assessment of severity at baseline and subsequent follow-up visits. Remarkable improvement was observed in these three cases. After one year of treatment, the baseline ISAA scores of 151, 127 and 132 turned to 65, 14 and 15, respectively (ISAA score 153 Severe Autism).
• COVID-19 vaccines and homoeopathy - An integrative review
Deepthi Gilla, S R Sreelakshmy, BSJ Raja Kumar
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy, 2022
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought millions of people at risk. Clinical trials of several known antiviral drugs and vaccines have been done. Homoeopathy is known to be effective in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases as well as in overcoming some adverse effects of vaccination. Objectives: The objectives of this review were to identify the adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccination from the published literature and doing homoeopathic repertorisation to find out indicated remedies for alleviating the ill effects of COVID-19 vaccines. Methods: Published literature was searched for ‘Covid-19’, ‘Vaccination’ and ‘Adverse events’ in PubMed between January 2020 and July 2021. The related symptoms pertaining to known adverse effects were picked and repertorised with appropriate rubrics from the ‘Vaccination’ chapter of Murphy’s clinical repertory and synthesis repertory. Results: Repertorial totality of identified symptoms was analysed. Thuja scored high when symptoms related to the adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines were repertorised according to Murphy’s and synthesis repertories. Indications of the common remedies for the ill-effects identified for COVID-19 vaccination are discussed. Conclusion: Vaccines against nCoV19 are still not fully researched, especially for their longterm effects. Hence, whether they would prove to be friends or foes to humankind, in the long run, is the arena of future research. Meanwhile, homoeopathy can lend its services to overcome the ill effects of the vaccination. Studies with rigorous designs to find out the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines in relieving the adverse effects of vaccination are suggested. International Journal of High Dilution Research, 2022
Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic, debilitating psychiatric disorder which is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and has a large impact on individuals, families and society. There is paucity of literature on usefulness of Homoeopathy in Schizophrenia. Cases summary: Two cases of Schizophrenia are assessed symptomatically using Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and treated in Psychiatry Department of (blinded for review) Case no.1 (Paranoid Schizophrenia) presented with sleeplessness, irritable mood, referential and persecutory delusions, auditory and olfactory hallucinations and thought broadcasting. The case was analyzed according to Kent’s method and Lycopodium 30c was prescribed. PANSS score of 135 at baseline turned to 30(Normal) within 4 months and maintained for the next 24 months of observation period. Case no.2 (Catatonic Schizophrenia) presented with sleeplessness, laughing and crying alternately, not responding to questions, silly smiling, slow activities, need for compulsion to do her daily activities, standing like a statue for hours assuming strange postures, poor sociability and delusion that her body is split vertically into two. The case was managed acutely with Ignatia 200C followed by a dose of Phosphorus 200C as a constitutional remedy. PANSS score of 157 at baseline turned to 30 (Normal) within 3 months and maintained for 24 months. There is reduction of positive, negative and general symptoms along with good psycho-social adaptation. Causal attribution of changes in condition to the homoeopathic treatment was depicted by the Modified Naranjo Criteria score. Conclusion: Homoeopathic medicines selected on the basis of individualization are useful in the management of Schizophrenia.
