This study evaluates the performance of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composites for rubber sealing applications in a cable-based tsunami system. Rubber composites were prepared using EPDM rubber with varying monomer and filler content to determine the most suitable composite. Mechanical characterization reveals that the composition of EPDM and the amount of filler loading influence the mechanical properties. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that ethylene and 5-ethylene-2-norbornene (ENB) content influence the glass transition and viscoelastic behavior of the composite. Thermal analysis of rubber composites using EPDM containing 70% ethylene and 5% ENB indicates no change in thermal stability due to prolonged immersion in seawater. Visual inspection using a microscope reveals no cracks on the surface of the rubber seal after the pressure chamber test for rubber composites utilizing EPDM with 70% ethylene and 5% ENB. It was shown that EPDM containing 70% ethylene and 5% ENB, with optimal reinforcement with 80 phr carbon black, exhibits the best performance for rubber sealing applications in subsea environments.

Alloying platinum (Pt) with transition metals such as nickel (Ni) has been an effective approach for reducing Pt loading and enhancing catalytic activities towards the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this work, we advance the fabrication of PtNi alloy electrodes through direct synthesis on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) utilizing wet chemical reduction methods. The catalytic activities and binding interaction between Pt and Ni are optimized through annealing PtNi electrodes at 200 °C under different gas flows of N2 and the mixture of H2/N2 at 5%/95%. The physical characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) show the significant effect of the annealing environment on the morphology and distribution of the PtNi alloy catalyst on the GDL surface. The optimized electrodes exhibited enhanced ORR mass activity, with values of 8.17 and 18.26 mA mg−1 for PtNi annealed with N2 and N2/H2, respectively, surpassing the benchmark Pt/C (5.25 mA mg−¹). These results underscore the critical role of the annealing environment in optimizing the catalytic performance of PtNi-based electrodes for PEMFC applications, offering insights into more efficient fuel cell technologies.

Rice straw waste holds considerable potential as a bio-reinforcement material in polymer composites; however, effective utilization requires surface modification to enhance fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion. This study investigates environmentally friendly surface modification methods, including sodium carbonate treatment with ultrasound (SNCO5%), plasma treatment (PT), and their combination (SNCO5%-PT). Comprehensive characterizations were performed, including surface morphology, O/C ratio, silica content, functional group analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The SNCO5%-PT treatment resulted in the highest silica enrichment and O/C ratio, with increases of 4.5 and 4.75 times, respectively, compared to the untreated sample (NT). FTIR analysis revealed intensified absorption peaks in SNCO5%-PT, particularly at wavenumbers associated with hydroxyl groups and absorbed water in cellulose. XRD analysis further confirmed that SNCO5%-PT achieved the largest crystallite size and highest crystallinity index among all treatments. These findings suggest that the combined treatment enhances the physicochemical properties of rice straw. Future work should focus on evaluating the mechanical performance of treated fibers in polyethylene composite systems, as well as assessing interfacial adhesion and durability under application-relevant conditions.

This study aims to optimize the formulation of natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) into a compound for applications in military vehicles when passing through various field conditions. Natural rubber types SIR 20 and RSS 1 were used with Carbon Black types N220 and N550 as fillers. In this study, samples that were both normal and samples that had aged for 72 hours at 70°C were created. The results showed that the mixture of RSS 1 - CB N220 (i.e., 100 phr–75 phr) influenced strength and stiffness. The physical and mechanical properties of the specimens, including curing time, tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, and compression set had been defined. By utilizing the resulting mechanical characteristics, rubber compounds are optimized to meet the specific requirements of airless tires, including durability, comfort, and performance. It is anticipated to create an airless tire that provides essential performance while reducing the risk of punctures and flats.

Rubber Conical Bonded (RCB) is a component that connects the wheel with the train bogie, which functions to dampen vibration and noise. This RCB is made of rubber. In this research, RCB vulcanizate will be made with a mixture of natural rubber (RSS 1) and rubber waste. Rubber waste is the residue from the production process of technical rubber goods or rubber technical goods that are no longer used. This rubber waste goes through a devulcanization process to be reused as a raw material. In this study, rubber waste derived from the residue of the production process was varied with the phr ratio as follows: RSS 1 / Rubber waste / Devulcanized rubber waste (RCB0: 100/0/0; RCB10: 90/10/0; RCB30: 70/30/0; RCB50: 50/50/0; RCB10X: 90/0/10; RCB30X: 70/0/30). The vulcanizate obtained was then subjected to physical characterization (before and after aging 24 hrs; 70oC) and compared with the technical specifications of the RCB. Physical characterization includes Tensile Strength (min 14 N/mm2), Tear Strength (min 26 N/mm2), Hardness Shore A (50±5), Elongation at Break (min 400%), and Compression Set (max 30%). The results show that all variations meet the specifications for tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness.

The performance of pneumatic fenders in seawater is crucial to ensure safety and serviceability. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate the performance of compound formulations of two different types of carbon black N660 and N220 at various NR/EPDM (Natural Rubber/Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) ratios of 100/0; 90/10; 80/20, and 70/30 in artificial seawater at 95°C for 30 days. The mechanical properties of rubber compounds were measured and compared before and after aging in seawater. Comparing two types of carbon black, no significant difference in tensile, elongation, tear strength, and compression set at the same blend ratios after aging in seawater. Nevertheless, the abrasion resistance of N220 is lower than that of N660 before and after aging in seawater due to insufficient dispersion. Adding high crystalline EPDM in the blend results in lower mechanical properties change than pure NR after aging in seawater. In addition, the blend contains EPDM imparts high abrasion resistance in seawater. Using EPDM up to 30 phr in the blend with NR indicates the possibility of utilizing this high oxidation stability of rubber as a pneumatic fender.
  • Epoxy - Glass microballoon syntactic foam: Study the effect of composition and microballoon type on density, porosity, and compressive strength

    Aip Conference Proceedings, 2024
Density and compressive strength are two important properties in the manufacture of syntactic foam materials. Syntactic foams are composites that are filled with hollow particles (microballoon). In this research, epoxy resin and glass microballoon were used as the main component. Two ways are usually done to get the syntactic foam properties as desired. The first way is by adjusting the composition of the microballoon and the second way is by choosing the type of microballoon. The effect of two types of microballoons with different crushing strengths (K15 and iM16K) on density, porosity, and compressive strength was carried out in this study. Instead of microballoons type, the composition of vol.% microoballoons varied as 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80% to investigate the influence of formulation. The results showed that at the same composition, microballoon with high crushing strength obtained higher compressive strength, but the density for microballoon with lower crush strength is lower. The increase in volume fraction for both types of microballoons resulted decreasing in density. With the use of low crushing strength microballoons, the compressive strength properties were decreasing with the higher volume fraction. But for microballoons with high crushing strength, there was no significant change in volume fraction variation.
