Rayan, Mostafa Zedan Journal of Sol Gel Science and Technology, 2025 The synergistic effects of population growth, industrialization, and urbanization drive an increase in environmental crises, such as water pollution. Polymeric nanocomposites (PNCs) offer a promising trend for large-scale applications in environmental remediation including photocatalytic water pollutants. In this work, V2O5 nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol-gel method and successfully incorporated into PMMA using the casting method. A series of V2O5/PMMA photocatalyst films have been fabricated with various loading content of V2O5 NPs. The morphological, crystal structure, and optical properties of the prepared V2O5/PMMA photocatalysts were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry, respectively. The SEM images indicate that there are mainly physical interactions between PMMA and V2O5 NPs. Moreover, the prepared V2O5/PMMA films before and after treatment with H2O2 + UV were evaluated toward MB photodegradation under UV irradiation. The results obtained showed that doping V2O5 NPs into PMMA could inhibit the recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers. Among all prepared catalysts, the highest photocatalytic performance toward MB degradation under UV irradiation was obtained using the treated P-VPO1 nanocomposite film (0.033% V2O5/PMMA) compared to other formulations. Approximately 80% of MB was degraded after 60 min of UV irradiation in the presence of the treated P-VPO1. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the promoting effect of the H2O2 + UV treatment for the prepared V2O5 doped PMMA films and with an appropriate loading amount of V2O5 NPs. Moreover, the P-VPO1 shows good reusability and stability for MB dye photodegradation after five consecutive runs under UV irradiation. This study reported a straightforward, and rapid approach to fabricate an improved V2O5/PMMA nanocomposite films with excellent reusability and attractive photocatalytic properties for diverse environmental applications, including water treatment. "Evaluation of spinel ferrites magnetic nanoparticles based hyperthermia: in-vitro study" Ahmed A. Abdelrahman, Ahmed S. Abd Raboh, Mahmoud M. Ismail, H. H. El-Bahnasawy, Diaa A. Rayan Applied Physics A Materials Science and Processing, 2024 This study is an attempt to compare the hyperthermia and antimicrobial activity of three members of the family of spinel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (XFe2O4, where X = Mg, Cu, and CO) MNPs. Spinell ferrite of MgFe2O4, CuFe2O4, and CoFe2O4 were prepared via sol–gel method. Structural and morphological shapes were investigated by different techniques X-ray diffraction X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and (Transmission electron microscope) TEM. Magnetic properties were examined by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The in vitro test was conducted on cervical Hela cells using an MTT assay. Finally, the antimicrobial activity was tested on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtlus, and Escherichia coli using a clearing inhibition zone. XRD results confirmed the crystalline nature of MgFe2O4, CuFe2O4, and CoFe2O4. VSM results showed a high maximum saturation (Ms = 44.87 emu/g) of CuFe2O4 which is greater than that of CoFe2O4 and MgFe2O4 (18.221 and 18.669) emu/g, respectively. MTT assay revealed that high cell death was detected on Hela cells of CuFe2O4 compared to that of MgFe2O4 and CoFe2O4. The anti-microbial study showed that the prepared spinel magnetic nanoparticles possessed antimicrobial activity due to the release of Mg, Cu, Co, and Fe ions. Results showed that the CuFe2O4 could be a good spinel ferrite for medical application with antimicrobial activity and generate heat (hyperthermia, anti-cancer material).
Efficacy of Ni2+ on modification the structure, ultrasonic, optical, and radiation shielding behaviors of potassium lead borate glasses W. M. Abd-Allah, M. Afifi, M. M. Abdelhamied, W. Ramadan, D. A. Rayan, I. A. El Mesady European Physical Journal Plus, 2024 This paper presents the method of preparing (60 − x) B2O3–20 K2O–20 PbO–x NiO, coded as (NiO x), and x = (0–10 mol%) glass systems fabricated through the melt-quench technique. The prepared glass was characterized through X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD); the mechanical behavior of the glass samples was investigated using the ultrasonic technique, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, the optical reflectance R(λ), refractive index (n), optical conductivity (σopt), the dispersion parameters of the studied samples were deduced using Wemple and Di-Domenico models. The results obtained were reported in detail. One of the fundamental parameters used to evaluate the interaction of radiation with shielding material was the mass attenuation coefficient (μm), which was obtained using Phy/X software and PHITS code program. It was used to calculate radiation interaction parameters, e.g., linear (μL) attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number (Zeff), half value layer HVL, mean free path (MFP) and the average atomic cross section, σt. Comparing the shielding behavior of the glass samples revealed that (NiO 10) glass demonstrated the highest μm and μL compared to the other samples. The maximum μm values equal 48.13, 48.73, 49.42, 50.59, and 51.08 cm2/g for (NiO 0) to (NiO 10), recorded at 0.015 MeV, respectively. This study shows that increasing the amount of NiO in the preferred glass samples leads to achieving high-performance radiation shielding materials. Graphical abstract
