  • Analysis of radio-opacity, surface roughness, and wettability of calcium carbonate nanoparticle-reinforced three-dimensional printed acrylic resin
Riyam Imad Taha, Firas Abdulameer Farhan
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part L Journal of Materials Design and Applications, 2026
Background Additive manufacturing (3D-printed) technology is a major advancement in prosthodontics, offering efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and the production of high-quality prostheses. Nanoparticles have been included in three-dimensional (3D) printed denture bases to enhance their physico-mechanical and biological characteristics. This work aims to examine the influences of adding calcium carbonate nanoparticles to 3D-printed denture base resins on their radio-opacity, wettability, and surface roughness. Material and method Ninety specimens were split into three groups: two modified groups (1.5 and 2 weight percent CaCO 3 NPs) and one control group (unmodified group). Three identical subgroups for the radiopacity test, surface roughness, and wettability test were formed from each concentration (n = 10). Additionally, the chemical composition of the 3D resin was also investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to see if the addition of calcium carbonate nanoparticles changed it, and the surface topography of 3D-printed acrylic specimens was compared using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Result Results revealed a significant improvement in the radio-opacity, wettability, and surface roughness (p < 0.05) after adding calcium carbonate nanoparticles to the 3D-printed denture base resin. Conclusion The specimens with 2% wt. of CaCO 3 NPs showed the greatest increase in radio-opacity. While specimens containing 1.5% wt. CaCO 3 NPs showed lower surface roughness and higher wettability.
  • Effect of incorporating calcium carbonate nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed acrylic resin
Riyam Imad Taha, Firas Abdulameer Farhan
    Science Progress, 2026
Denture base materials made using three-dimensional printing (3D printing) have expanded in availability, contributing to the meteoric rise of this innovative dental technique. Despite 3D-printed denture resins having good biocompatibility and esthetics, achieving superior mechanics in these materials is still difficult. This study aimed to find out how adding calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticles to 3D-printed denture base resin affected its surface hardness, impact strength, and flexural strength. The ninety 3D printed samples were allocated into three groups following the amount of CaCO 3 NPs added to the resin: one control group had no CaCO 3 , and two modified groups—one had 1.5 wt.%, and the other group had 2 wt.%. Surface hardness, impact, and flexural strength were the three test specifications used to further divide each group into three subgroups. Analysis was also conducted utilizing energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). All data were statistically analyzed. The results verified that adding CaCO 3 NPs to the 3D-printed denture resin significantly boosted its impact strength, flexural, and surface hardness ( P value < 0.05). These findings indicate potential for developing a novel denture base constructed from 3D-printed nanocomposites with enhanced material properties.

    Dental Hypotheses, 2023
Introduction: This study was designed to examine the effects of addition of the combination of polymerized polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and zirconia (ZrO2) particles to heat cure PMMA resin on impact strength, surface hardness, and roughness. Methods: The 70% (w/w) of polymerized PMMA powder (particle size: 0.70 µm) was mixed with 30% (w/w) of zirconia powder (ZrO2) (1 µm) to produce PMMA-ZrO2 filler. Ninety acrylic specimens created were divided into three groups containing 0% wt (Control group), 2% wt, and 4% wt, PMMA-ZrO2 filler. Ten specimens were used for impact strength, surface hardness and roughness test, blindly. Data were analyzed via one-way ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test using R 3.6.3. Results: There was statistically significant difference among study groups regarding surface hardness and roughness (p < 0.001). Yet, nonsignificant difference was found on the subject of impact strength (p = 0.33). Post hoc test showed statistically significant difference for all pairwise comparisons as regards surface hardness and roughness (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The incorporation of PMMA-ZrO2 filler did not improve impact strength (resistance during an unexpected blows or dropping). Yet, increased surface roughness and hardness, concentration-dependently.

  • Comparison of the accuracy of intraoral digital impression system and conventional impression techniques for multiple implants in the full-arch edentulous mandible

Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, 2021
Background Several impression techniques, especially in combination with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), are used in increasing the accuracy of dental implantology and decreasing patient discomfort. The study was designed to examine the accuracy of the digital impression (DI) of multiple implants with an intraoral scanner (IOS) and compared with that of a conventional impression (CI). Material and Methods Four dental implants were placed in teeth area #33, #36, #43 and 46# of the mandibular full-arch model. The implanted model was replicated by IOS and CI after fitting of scannable abutments over the implant screws. Then, a small hole was made on the scan region (as a reference point). Two types of CI techniques were used; dual-phase (DP) and monophase (MP). Stone casts were produced through a conventional close tray impression technique using die stone. The casts were scanned with a laboratory scanner. DI was attained by scanning the implanted model with the IOS. The control sample was accomplished by scanning the implanted model directly with a laboratory scanner. Dimensional accuracy was calculated by measuring the distances between the reference points of four measuring parameters as follows; A-B, B-C, C-D, and A-D using CAD software. Results The mean values and standard deviation between the four parameters of different impression techniques (CI and DI) and the control group showed convergent value. One-way ANOVA test showed all CI techniques, except IOS, showed a significant differences from the control group. Conclusions Compared with CI, the IOS was more accurate because no differences were observed between its measurements and those of the control model. CI is simple and reduces patient discomfort when used in fabricating multiple implants and allowing communication with dental technicians. Key words:Dimension accuracy, conventional impressions, digital impressions, multiple implants.
