  • Notes on the state of Brazilian television archives: From scattered initiatives to an uncertain future

    In recent years, there has been a growing interest in past television programmes and television memory more broadly, a trend amplified by streaming platforms. This development highlights the critical issue of television archiving and content accessibility. As Brazilian television approaches its 75th anniversary in 2025, this article examines the current state of television archives in Brazil, their accessibility to the general public, and the role of amateur archiving on online platforms. We analyse the public and private dimensions of these archives and, drawing on international examples, advocate for public-private collaborations to expand Brazilian citizenship through equitable access to television archives.

    A primeira fala de Geni (Darlene Glória) em Toda nudez será castigada, peça de Nelson Rodrigues (1965) adaptada para o cinema por Arnaldo Jabor (1972), ecoa a fala de Lisa Berndle (Joan Fontaine) em Carta de uma desconhecida, filme dirigido por Max Ophüls, em 1948, nos Estados Unidos e baseado em novela homônima de Stefan Zweig (2015 [1922]). Em ambos os filmes, vozes femininas de protagonistas mortas anunciam seu destino trágico a pares românticos incapacitados, por motivos diversos, de encarnar a jornada do herói. O músico protagonista de Zweig/Ophüls vive em função do glamouroso mundo do espetáculo. Seu narcisismo o torna insensível às investidas sinceras da vizinha apaixonada, até que, tarde demais, já decadente, toma conhecimento de sua própria alienação via missiva lida por ele em silêncio, ao som da voz dela, Fontaine, em over.     O artigo analisa obras recentes de ficção ou documentário que acentuaram a presença visual de cidadãos pobres, negros, moradores de favelas e bairros de periferia no cinema e na televisão brasileiros. Ao trazer esse universo à atenção pública, esses filmes intensificaram e estimularam uma disputa pelo controle da visualidade, pela definição de que assuntos e personagens ganharão expressão audiovisual, como e onde, elemento estratégico na definição da ordem (ou desordem) contemporânea.
