  • Luminescence of Tm3+, Yb3+ Co-doped CaLaAlO4/LaAlO3 Mixed Phase Phosphor for Solid-state Lighting Application

    CaLaAlO4/LaAlO3: 0.5%Tm3+, xYb3+ upconversion phosphors were prepared via the combustion method. The Tm3+ dopant concentration was constant (Tm=0.5mol%), while the concentration of Yb3+ co-dopant was varied (Yb = 1 – 10 mol%). The X-ray diffraction studies indicated a mixture of phases (tetragonal and hexagonal of CaLaAlO4 and LaAlO3 respectively). The optical absorption spectra of the upconversion phosphors have two absorption bands centered at 253 nm, and another band at 440 nm. The band at 253 nm is ascribed to the charge transfer band (CTB) between the ligand (O2-) and Yb3+ ions, while the broad band located at 440 nm was related to defect states in the lattice. The energy bandgap and refractive index of the optimized phosphor were 4.73 eV and 1.76 respectively. The upconversion emission peaks centered at 478 nm (1G4 → 3H6), 654 nm (1G4 → 3F4), and 801 nm (3H4 → 3H6) are associated to the electronic transitions of Tm3+ ions. As the Yb concentration increases, the colour emission is tuned from bluish white to blue light. The CCT and CIE coordinate of (0.2419, 0.2463) showed that the phosphor doped with 10 mol% of Yb3+ produces a bluish-white and its colour purity was 80%. Thus, the strong bluish-white light emission produced by the CaLaAlO4/LaAlO3: 0.5%Tm3+, xYb3+ phosphors could be used for solid-state lighting (SSL) or in multicolour displays.
  • Blue-Emitting SrLaAlO4: Ce Phosphors Obtained by Combustion Synthesis

    In this study, a simple combustion synthesis was utilized to obtain the SrLaAlO4 (SLAO) host sample and SrLaAlO4: Ce (SLAO:Ce) phosphors with different Ce concentrations (1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0 mol.%). Also, the as-synthesized samples were subjected to a post-annealing treatment at 1200 °C in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for the SLAO and SLAO:Ce phosphors correspond to pure tetragonal phase (JCPDS No 24-1125). The photoluminescence spectra of the SLAO:Ce phosphors (under 254 nm excitation) showed a blue emission peak at 470 nm attributed to the 5d → 4f Ce3+ transition. The SLAO:Ce phosphors doped with 1 mol.% of Ce showed the highest emission and quenching of photoluminescence was produced when the Ce dopant concentration increases (3.0-7.0 mol.%). The CCT and color purity are in the range of 6456 -8276 K and 49.1 -55.9 % respectively. Due to its strong blue emission, the SLAO:Ce phosphor could be a good candidate for UV phosphor converted LED or for solid state lighting applications.
  • Blue/NIR-emitting Phosphor Based on Sr2CeO4: Tm3+, Yb3+ Obtained by Combustion Synthesis

    In this study, pure Sr2CeO4 (SCO) and codoped Sr2CeO4:Tm3+, Yb3+ (SCO:Tm, Yb) of powder phosphors were synthesized by a combustion technique. The concentration of Tm3+ was fixed at 0.5 mol %, while the Yb3+ doping concentration was varied from 0 to 7.0 mol %. The crystalline structure, morphology and luminescence properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy, respectively. The XRD analysis shows the crystalline orthorhombic phase for all synthesized samples of SCO and SCO: Tm, Yb. The SEM results show that the doped sample with 5.0 mol % Yb3+ has the lowest grain particle size of 1.92 mm. The SCO:Tm, Yb phosphors produce mainly blue and near infrared emission bands centered at 481 nm and 813 nm (under 980 nm, excitation) which corresponds respectively to 1G4→3H6 and 3H4→3H6 transitions of Tm3+. In addition, the international commission on illumination CIE coordinates were calculated for all samples taking the range of 400 – 700 nm obtaining for the 5.0 mol % Tm3+ doped sample the coordinates: (x,y) = (0.0833, 0.1671) which match with pure blue color. Due to the strong blue and near infrared emissions, the SCO:Tm, Yb phosphors could be good candidates for use in biomarkers or lighting applications.

    In this study Barium Lanthanum Aluminate BaLaAlO4 and BaLaAlO4:xEu red phosphors were produced at different x at.% Eu concentration (x = 0,1,3,5 and 7 at.% of Eu) by combustion synthesis method and post-annealing. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns shows that all samples present the orthorhombic phase (JCPDS # 44-0164). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the grains size diminished and then increases as a function of Eu-doping concentration addition. Photoluminescence spectra of the samples, under UV excitation, show a maximum strong red emission at lem= 615 nm attributed to the 5D0®7F2 Eu3+ ion transition. The Eu-doped BaLaAlO4 sample that present the highest luminescence intensity was with the x= 1.0 at.% of Eu doping concentration. The quenching in photoluminescence spectra was detected for the Eu doping concentrations of x= 5 and 7 at%, which was ascribed to due to dipole-quadrupole (d-q) interactions. Because the strong red emission of Eu-doped BaLaAlO4 phosphor it could be used UV activated LEDs.

    In this work, Al 2 O 3:xEu 3+ were synthesized by the combustion method. The atomic concentration percentage of En doping was varied (x = 0%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 7at%). Structural and morphological properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques, respectively. The XRD patterns of the pure (x = 0%) and Eu-doped (x=1at%) show the single Al2O3 corundum phase. For the highest Eu-doped concentrations of x = 3%, x = 5% and x = 7at%, the Al2O3:xEu samples, present a mixture of phases of corundum (Al2O3) and EuAlO3 (perovskite). SEM images show irregular grains with average sizes in the range of 0.1 - 78.8 μm. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis show that all Eu-doped Al2O3 samples exhibits intense red-emission. PL spectra show two main peaks at 615 nm (5D0°7F2) and 700 nm (5D0°7F4). The x = 3at% Eu-doped sample presents the highest intensity under 256 nm excitation. CIE coordinates were calculated from the PL spectra, values around x= 0.6 and y= 0.3 (red emission) were obtained from all samples. Due to its strong luminescence those Al2O3:xEu phosphors could be good candidates for components in solid state lighting.
