International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, 2024
Founded in 2016, the Mato Grosso Meat Institute is an autonomous social service formed by representatives of the farm production sector, of the industry, of society and of the state government to promote the meat produced in the state of Mato Grosso, one of the most important states for Brazilian agriculture and livestock production. Despite several promising projects in the pipeline on the topics of information sharing, sustainable insertion of smallholders and other, IMAC still has not reached a protagonist role in Mato Grosso beef chain. With several changes and trends emerging in consumer food behavior, its president (Caio Penido), is still looking for the best strategies to improve Mato Grosso’s competitive advantage and align all the agents involved to fulfill IMAC’s “vision for the chain”. • Agriculture evolution, sustainability and trends, focusing on Brazilian agribusiness: a review
Marcos Fernando Basso, Marcos Fava Neves, Maria Fatima Grossi-de-Sa
Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2023
The world’s population is expected to grow by 30%–35% over the next 60 years. Forecasts indicate that the world’s population will reach almost 10 billion by 2050, with India and China as the most populous countries. As a result, the demand for global food production, particularly protein and dairy products, and their nutritional quality will need to increase by 50%–75%. In addition to increasing food production, it is also necessary to consider and reduce the impact on the environment and ecosystem. On the one hand, the threat of climate change, the reduction of arable land for agricultural expansion, the economic impact of geopolitical conflicts, the human and animal health pandemics, the conjuncture of the domestic political environments, and the demand for new technologies are the main bottlenecks to increasing sustainable food production worldwide. In contrast, notable technological advances have been achieved in current agriculture through basic and advanced scientific research, development, innovation, and technology transfer to the agribusiness sector. Technological advances in various sectors will become increasingly important to increase food production and minimize environmental impacts. This review study briefly highlights the major technological advances in world agriculture that have contributed to the substantial increase in food production from the early days of extractive agriculture to high-performance agriculture. It then highlights the key breakthroughs, disruptive technologies, the impact of climate change on agriculture, and contributions from molecular sciences that are revolutionizing global agriculture, focusing on Brazilian agriculture, livestock, and agribusiness. Subsequently, the evolution of Brazilian agriculture is highlighted based on the market share of agricultural products and its relevance to the national GDP. Finally, the potential decision-making that could have a positive impact on the Brazilian agribusiness sector and that will affect the import and export of agribusiness products were addressed. Therefore, the importance of supporting the agribusiness sector to increase healthy food production with higher nutritional quality and with less impact on the environment and human life was highlighted.

Revista De Gestao Social E Ambiental, 2023
Objective: The purpose of the research is to understand the technological evolution of agriculture over the years and propose a new perspective for the practices that are becoming established in agribusiness. Theoretical framework: The study analyzes agricultural activities practiced from the beginning of agriculture up to the present day to demonstrate the trends that are likely to gain strength in this sector in the coming years. Method: The investigation aimed to be descriptive. Bibliographic and documentary research were used as methodological procedures. Results and conclusion: The findings suggest that the agribusiness sector is transitioning into a novel phase termed Agriculture 6.0, wherein sustainability assumes a pivotal role in business advancement. A paradigmatic shift is observed in production processes, characterized by an ongoing pursuit of ecosystem preservation and restoration, in congruence with the aspirations of future generations for an improved quality of life. Research implications: The proposal of a new technological model that characterizes the evolution of agricultural activities is focused on defining concepts, systems, technologies/services, and areas of study. This enables agribusiness organizations to gain a deeper understanding of the transformations occurring in the macro-environment, thereby considering these aspects in their planning processes. Originality/value: Brazil is one of the world's largest agricultural producers and exporters. Therefore, in order to continue solidifying itself as a sustainable supplier of food, fibers, and other agricultural products, the country needs to remain attentive to the changes demanded by the environment and the trends that are gaining strength in the current scenario.
  • Geo Biogas & Tech: leading sustainable energy transition in Brazil through biogas business: CASE STUDY
Leticia Franco Martinez, Marcos Fava Neves, Beatriz Papa Casagrande, Gabriel de Oliveira Teixeira, Vinicius Cambaúva, et al.
International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, 2023
The aggravation of climate change in recent years has intensified the search for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and the insertion of renewable alternatives in the energy matrix at Brazilian and global level. Geo Biogas & Tech emerged in this scenario in 2007, bringing German efficient gas generation technology to biogas production in Brazil. The company is a pioneer in the services it offers and a leader in the development of this chain in the country, by transforming organic waste into clean electricity and fuels. The increased demand for sustainability added to the enormous potential of Brazilian agribusiness, offers new opportunities and challenges for Geo, in terms of growth and consolidation in the market. Thus, the case is intended for undergraduate students and professionals in the sector who seek to develop business evolution strategies in this field.

  • Fertilizantes Tocantins: growing in the challenging fertilizer business CASE STUDY
Marcos Fava Neves, Lourival Carmo Monaco Neto, Vinícius Cambaúva, Luciano Thomé e Castro, Carlos Eduardo Lourenço
International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, 2022
Fertilizantes Tocantins was founded by José Eduardo Motta in 2003, out of his desire of taking advantage of the fast-growing agricultural businesses in the northern region of Brazil. He had previous knowledge of the fertilizer sector due to his work in his father’s business for several years. After an impressive success and enormous growth rates until 2016, 50% plus one shares of the company were sold to EuroChem, a European fertilizer producer. This was part of Fertilizantes Tocantins’ strategy to achieve even greater and sustainable growth. In 2020 EuroChem bought the remaining shares of Fertilizantes Tocantins, becoming its sole controller. The company still maintains most of its operational structure and now is fueled with capital and other assets from EuroChem. The challenge ahead lies in being able to maintain the organizational culture and winning position while bringing the best of its controller’s assets to achieve the goal of being a leader in the Brazilian fertilizer market.
  • Brazilian farmer confidence in business performance
Caetano Haberli Júnior, Eduardo Eugênio Spers, Lilian Maluf de Lima, Débora da Costa Simões, Marcos Fava Neves
International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, 2022
The aim of this article is to understand how rural producers in Brazil generate their investment expectations in terms of their costs, productivity, and other macroeconomic variables related to agricultural production. This study contributes to the formulation of more efficient public policies that take into account not only market information, but also the expectations of farmers. Based on data from a survey that calculates the rural producer confidence index in Brazil, non-parametric tests were performed to assess the equality of responses attributed by them in different periods, configured as crop development and harvest start, during 2014 and 2017. The results indicate that the farmer’s behavior is sensitive to changes in the market and his business. Productivity is seen as a long-term expectation. The cost of production and the sale price have generated short and medium-term expectations.
