  • Development and implementation of a model predictive control system for a solar parabolic trough plant influenced by an advanced meteorological disturbance model
    K. Kalanithi, G. Giftson Samuel, M. Malathi, R.Venkatesan
    Scientific Reports, 2025
Renewable energy is critical to conserve resources and provide a secure environment for generations to come, and the most common and abundant of these is solar energy. India hopes to reach 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel power by this decade, and solar systems are likely to contribute prominently to this goal. Solar based generation is clean, pollution free, and important for national energy security, while solar thermal collectors form the core of such systems. A widely used concentrating solar power technology is the parabolic trough collector, which shows nonlinear behaviour and is disturbed by changes in input energy, requiring advanced control methods. A weather disturbance model was developed in this study using local data from Tamil Nadu, India, and evaluated under three control schemes: Predictive functional control, proportional-integral-derivative, and model predictive control. The findings indicate that model predictive control regulates outlet temperature more effectively, limiting peak overshoot to 6.67% with a settling time of 3600 s. In contrast, predictive functional control recorded 25% overshoot, while proportional-integral-derivative control showed 43.33% overshoot. The state-space-based weather disturbance model also provided closer tracking of set values compared with the other approaches. Predictive functional control produced a quicker transient response but with significant overshoot, the proportional-integral-derivative scheme delayed in reaching the target, while model predictive control maintained steady and consistent stability. All controllers had a delay of about 30 to 60 s, but model predictive control provided the best overall balance of disturbance rejection, settling time, and tracking accuracy.

About 1.5 million publics in the world do not have access to electricity and getting them access to it, has become the most pressing issue. Due to power shortages, the electrical supply faces instability and the households integrated with the grids, encounters frequent power outages. This is because of the insufficient power generation, which is brought on by fluctuating voltage levels and antiquated transmission cables. Therefore, it is mandatory to identify a decentralized source of energy, for providing uninterruptable power supply. In developing countries, there is a great demand towards Renewable Energy Sources (RES) like wind, solar, biogas, etc. The formation of Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) develops a realistic, as well as appealing approach for resolving the energy demands. These cost effective resources have only a minor impact on non-conventional energies. Therefore, the utilization of RES, provides better economic growth and efficient power management. Besides, Microgrid (MG) is an embedded network, which incorporates RES along with different loads and it assists in energy management. The MGs, to achieve optimum functionality, necessitates energy efficient storage units. The RES utilized in MGs, aids in providing energy stability and in case of excess energy production, it is stored in the storage units. The HRES incorporates a variety of EMS (Energy Management Systems) to maintain stability and energy management. In this paper, the techniques and algorithms that assists in energy management are evidently discussed. The goal of this paper is to examine the manner in which model interpretability is increased by reviewing prior studies that used interpretable machine learning approaches for energy management. Moreover, a comparative analysis is carried out between the different techniques, in order to observe the best optimal energy managing technique.

    Aip Conference Proceedings, 2022
This paper provides hybrid solar and wind systems integrated with battery. Solar and wind are more suitable combinations in renewable energy because eco-friendly and natural abundance is high, a geographical location globally. Hybrid system integrated with bidirectional DC-DC (BDC) converter, 3–∅–inverter and LC filter. Mostly, polycrystalline panels are used for industries and residential areas because of constant output towards the partial shading effect that the voltage and current based under a standard condition of Solar Irradiance 1000W/m2 and Temperature 25°C. However, this proposed system improved reliability; reduce voltage fluctuations due to various irradiations and wind speed combined with the main grid. The battery with a DC-DC converter is incorporated to the main power system by a 3–∅–inverter and also the battery is used to store the energy in normal condition and deliver the energy when not available of the sources. That is compared withstand along with systems. Finally, the simulations of the separated hybrid power systems with BDC, 3–∅–inverter, and LC filter were validated in Matlab/Simulink.

The monitoring of Maximum Power Point (MPP) is a successful method for improving Photo Voltaic (PV) power extraction under different types of weather conditions. The power versus voltage curve shows multiple peaks as the PV module receives the different irradiances during the partial shading condition. In these situations, the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) capability to monitor the PV array's global MPP directly impacts system performance. Different approaches to MPPT were proposed in the literature. Among all, MPPT techniques based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have established the potential to locate the MPP on a large scale. This work contributes a thorough and in-depth review of MPPT strategies based on AI. According to its application strategy, each method is categorized into one of several subcategories. The different techniques for incorporating AI into MPPTs are thoroughly examined with the thorough analysis of their merits and demerits. This study creates a set of MPPT techniques based on AI so that users can realize and choose the best approach for their needs and system constraints.
  • Designing the Modern Dual-Engine Two-Speed Smart Hybrid Electric Drive Powertrain
Balachandra Pattanaik, Mukil Alagirisamy, V. Karthikeyan, Ramesh Babu Nallamothu, G. Giftson Samuel
    International Journal of Photoenergy, 2022
While potential for battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) is increasing as the need to minimise greenhouse gas pollution and the utilization of energy production, the restricted driving range and the uninviting market price constitute BEV obstacles to reliable assessment as a conventional car. This paper suggests a double-motor multispeed direct-drive BEV drivetrain to improve average engine running performance in everyday travelling whilst raising any production or control sophistication, effectively saving minimal battery resources and production costs. The characteristics of the proposed drivetrain are first defined through quantitative and visual measurements, which divide the conventional one-engine propulsion to two with different permanent gears to optimise engine performance. Centred on dynamic powertrain modelling in Simulink, the economic change strategy and circulatory system consisting transfer control were planned and checked. Based on the simulation performance, it is stated that substantial increases in energy quality can be accomplished. Thanks to the optimised torque transfer control technique, the vehicle’s incredibly low pull is registered during the shifting phase. Finally, it can be inferred that the suggested dual-motor drivetrain is better than the conventional single-motor equivalent in terms of fuel efficiency, driving range, and expense. There is substantial increase in total machine running areas of affordable to solitary machine performance and megacity driving ages, similar to WLTC, FTP-75, and JP 10-15, with 5 to 8 percentage performance enhancement being achieved.
