The effect of ammonium polyphosphate on the Crescentia cujete fruit shell polymer composites for automotive heat shield N Parkunam, P Gopal, V Vignesh Kumar Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part E Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, 2025 This research work aims to investigate new polymer composites using Crescentia cujete fruit shell fiber (CF)-loaded epoxy composites prepared in an open mould with varying wt.% of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in the ranges of 0, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%. The composite specimens were fabricated by ASTM standards and tested for tensile strength, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical flammability (UL-94 V), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and water absorption. The 20 wt.% APP-loaded CF composites had the highest tensile strength of 36.83 MPa, a LOI value of 28, and a flammability ignition time of 21 s, achieving a V-2 rating and dripping. According to UL-94 and LOI measurements, the APP in CF composites improves flame retardancy. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used on the APP-loaded epoxy composite specimen to identify the presence of various functional groups. Loading APP disrupts epoxy-fiber compatibility, as evidenced by FE-SEM. TGA indicates that higher temperatures result in more char residue, leading to enhanced flame retardancy. The water absorption results indicate that the addition of APP in CF composites absorbs less water compared with the pure composite due to increased resistance and limited flow directions. The TGA result shows, the sample containing 15% APP had an initial weight loss of 5% at 276.48°C and a residue weight of 28.16% at 500°C, indicating that this sample has a higher temperature despite its nature and superior thermal stability when compared to the other samples of this work making it suitable for automotive heat shield applications.
Optimal shape selection of pseudo-rigid-body model compliant centrifugal clutch manufactured by thermoplastics using TOPSIS approach Azhagiri Pon, K Subramanian, P Gopal, K Palanikumar Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, 2023 This paper discusses and analyses a compliant centrifugal clutch with different materials. Compliant centrifugal clutch specimens required for investigation are prepared by an injection moulding process. Experiments are conducted based on the experiments designed as per Taguchi’s Design of Experiment (DoE); an L27 Orthogonal Array (OA) is formulated and a multi-response optimisation approach Technique of Order Preference Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is adopted for optimising torque carrying capacity, wear rate and, contact temperature. Experiments are conducted for three different polymer materials viz., polypropylene (PP), Delrin (DE) and polyurethane (PU) with three different profiles, circular (CR), elliptical (EL) and square fillet (SF), along with varying rotating speeds. The outcome shows that by changing the clutch material and flexure profiles, a substantial variation in torque carrying capacity, wear rate and contact temperature is observed.
Experimental and numerical analysis of vortex generators designed for utility vehicles Ramesh Kumar Chidambaram, Rajesh Kanna, Poomanandan Gopal, Senthil Kumar Archives of Thermodynamics, 2023 The main goal of today’s car designers is to minimize fuel consumption in all possible ways at the same time maintaining the vehicle’s performance as usual. The goal of this work is to study the effect of adding a vortex generator (VG) on the aerodynamics of the vehicle and fuel economy. Both theoretical and experimental works were carried out and the outcomes of the numerical simulations are contrasted with those of the experimental results. A utility vehicle model with a scale ratio of 1:15 was used as a test model. Experimental research has been done on the fluctuation of the coefficient of pressure, dynamic pressure, and coefficients of lift and drag with and without VG on the roof of a utility vehicle. The delta-shaped VG was put to the test both numerically and experimentally. At a velocity of 2.42 m/s, it is observed that the addition of VG can raise the pressure coefficient by about 17%. When compared to the vehicle model without vortex generators, the velocity profile of the ccomputational fluid dynamics analysis shows that at the back end of the vehicle, the wake has been minimized with VG.

Hardness and thermal analysis in welded butt joint of hybrid aluminium (LM25) metal matrix nano composite Cylindrical Rod using TIG welding process V. Deepakaravind, P. Gopal, A. Viswanathan Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2018 An attempt is made in optimization of welding parameters of Hybrid LM25 Aluminium Metal Matrix Nano Composite (AMMNC) Cylindrical Rod made by using stir casting method. 2% of nano Silicon carbide (SiC) particles along with 3% of nano alumina is added with Base metal LM25 Aluminium alloy for producing Hybrid AMMNC Samples. Joining of this Hybrid AMMNC samples are done by using TIG welding Process. By conducting experiment, effect of welding parameters such as welding pulse current, Arc Voltage and shielding gas flow rate on welded Hybrid AMMNC Samples are studied. To develop the regression equation and predict the weld centre micro hardness value on welded AMMNC Samples Design-Expert version 11 statistical software is used. From the predicted value of weld centre micro hardness value 100HV has been observed from the Empirical model results. Therefore to optimize welding pulsed current, Arc Voltage and Shielding gas flow rate parameters are resulted in higher micro hardness value as observed in welded Hybrid AMMNC Samples ,which implies that strength of the weld is increased with respect to optimize welding parameters. In addition to investigate the temperature distribution in optimized Hardness value of welded AMMNC sample. Then heat fusion in the size and distribution of heat source, the travel speed, the heat conduction in the welding direction and the surface heat loss during welding are considered. A numerical scheme is developed to solve the three dimensional problem. With the help of a mathematical model, the effect of welding parameters such as heat input of the weld, preheating of the work piece and moving velocity of heat source on weld penetration in welded AMMNC cylindrical rod samples are discussed. The steady-state temperature profiles of the welded AMMNC samples are solved by finite difference method. In addition, a thermal experiment such as Heat Flux Differential Scanning Calorimeter Experiment is conducted to verify the theoretical results and Numerical results in ANSYS software. The predicted values from the proposed model are compared with the experimental data of optimized welded AMMNC samples.
