Impact of alumina nanoparticles and lanthanum zirconate coating on the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine functioned with Terminalia cattappa seed oil P. Venkatesh, B. Kumaragurubaran, J. B. Raj, C. R. Kumar Global Nest Journal, 2025
This study investigated the potential of biofuels as sustainable alternatives to petroleum based source in CI engines, through focus about biodiesel derived from Terminalia catappa seed oil. Specifically, it scrutinized the consequence of incorporating aluminum oxide into biodiesel plus implementing Lanthanum Zirconate thermal layers to engine elements. Four source variations were inspected: diesel, Terminalia catappa seed oil, 80% diesel and 20% Terminalia catappa seed oil, and a blend of 80% diesel, 20% Terminalia catappa seed oil, and aluminum oxide nanoparticles. Key fuel characteristics, including density, calorific value, viscosity, Cetane number, and flash point, were measured. The engine's performance was assessed through parameters such as brake specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency, emissions, heat release rate, and peak cylinder pressure. Findings revealed that the 80% diesel, 20% Terminalia catappa seed oil, and aluminum oxide nanoparticles blend, when used in a coated engine, demonstrated a 10% drop in BSFC and a 6.4% augment in BTE relative to pure diesel. Emissions were also significantly reduced: CO emissions decreased to 0.051 vol%, HC to 31 ppm, and smoke opacity to 45%, representing reductions of 43%, 13.8%, and 10%, respectively, compared to diesel. These consequences underscore prospective of biodiesel combined with additives in addition to thermal layer to augment performance plus reduce emissions in diesel engines.

Optimization of wear parameters of aluminium 7075 hybrid composites using taguchi technique R Ashok raj, P Mathiyalagan, B Kumaragurubaran, M G Skanda, V Sivaganesan, et al. Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2024 This research work highlights theproduction of AA7075 hybrid composites incorporated with wt.% (x=0, 1.5, 3) of Molybdenum di sulfide(MoS2) and 12wt% of titanium di boride(TiB2). The AA7075/MoS2/TiB2 hybrid composites were produced through powder metallurgy. The microstructure of fabricated composites was studied with the help of scanning electron microscope. SEM image of AA7075/3wt.%MoS2 /12wt.%TiB2 HMMC has uniform distribution of reinforcements in the matrix AA7075and it confirms that there is no oxide formation in the surface of the produced composites. Besides, there is no porosity formation in the manufactured AA7075 HMMCs. The selected input process parameters were sliding distance (SD), wt% of MoS2 and applied load (AL). The wear loss was selected as response parameter. The experimental plan was generated by utilizing Taguchi technique. The POD equipment was employed for executing the wear test as per Taguchi experiments plan. The worn-out surfaces were analyzed to study the impact on the variation of sliding distance, wt% of MoS2andapplied load. Taguchi approach and ANOVA were utilized to determine the dominating factor on wear loss of AA7075 based hybrid composites
Experimental Investigation on Thermal Behavior of Indian Almond–Veli Karuvelam Hybrid Composites Suderson Krishna Pillai, Kumaragurubaran Balasubramanian, Bensam Raj Jesuretnam Journal of Natural Fibers, 2022 Natural fiber composites are gaining more attention in automobile and aerospace industries due to its light weight with better performance. However, its performance is affected by the critical environment such as high temperature. Hence, analyzing the thermal stability of materials is paramount important. In this investigation, natural fiber-based composite was fabricated using Indian almond (I) and Veli karuvelam fibers (V) and its thermal stability was analyzed. Totally, five composites were fabricated viz. I:V(0:1) – 60 wt% epoxy and 40 wt% Veli karuvelam, I:V(1:3) – 60 wt% epoxy, 10 wt% Indian almond, and 30 wt% Veli karuvelam, I:V(1:1) – 60 wt% epoxy, 20 wt% Indian almond, and 20 wt% Veli karuvelam, I:V(3:1) – 60 wt% epoxy, 30 wt% Indian almond, and 10 wt% Veli karuvelam, and I:V(1:0) – 60 wt% epoxy and 40 wt% Indian almond. Thermogravimetric analysis was made, and the best composite was selected, which was further involved into thermal analysis, and the activation energies were determined by KAS and FWO kinetic models. Results showed that the I:V(0:1) composite showed the superior thermal stability compared to all other composites, and an onset degradation temperature of 387.64°C was observed. Further, the average activation energies determined by FWO and KAS models were showed as 51.73 and 42.19 kJ/mol, respectively, for I:V(0:1) composite. Hence, this investigation concludes that the I:V(0:1) composite could be a better candidate in the automobile and aviation fields to adopt the thermal environment.
Experimental Investigation on the Mechanical and Moisture Absorption Behavior of Indian Almond–Veli Karuvelam Hybrid Composites Suderson Krishnapillai, Kumaragurubaran Balasubramanian, Bensam Raj Jesuretnam Journal of Natural Fibers, 2022 In this study, Indian almond – Veli Karuvelam hybrid composites were fabricated by hand layup method and the mechanical & moisture absorption behaviors were studied. Totally, five composites were fabricated viz. I:V(1:0), I:V(0:1), I:V(3:1), I:V(1:1) & I:V(1:3). Tensile, flexural, impact & moisture absorption studies were carried out. Performance of all the composites was compared with each other. Experimental results showed that the I:V(0:1) exhibited the maximum tensile & flexural strength of 65 MPa & 240 MPa, respectively, due to the packing of more amount of high strength & high stiffness Veli Karuvelm fibers. Impact study showed that the I:V(0:1) composite displayed the maximum impact strength of 6.7 kJ/m2 owing to the optimum bonding strength among the fibers and resin. Further, the moisture absorption study resulted that the I:V(1:0) composite showed the higher moisture absorption of 55% at 14 days compared to other composites because of the greater water intake capacity of the Indian almond fibers. It is concluded from this study that the I:V(0:1) composite could be used in structural applications as exhibited better mechanical properties.
Experimental Study on Heat Transfer Performance of Variable Area Straight Fin Heat Sinks with PCM Rajasekaran Madhaiyan, Pandal Thannir, Kumaragurubaran Balasubramanian, Mohan Raman Thermal Science, 2022 The thermal performance of heat sinks with variable area straight fins with and without PCM is quantitatively explored in this article. The effects of diverse fin geometries (constant area straight fin, variable area straight fin, circular pin fin, hemispherical pin fin, and elliptical pin fin), varying Reynolds numbers, and fin densities on boosting electronics cooling performance were investigated. The goal of this research is to develop the best fin geometry for electronics cooling technologies. This research demonstrates that altering fin density can improve heat sink thermal performance while also reducing heat sink weight. The base temperature of the heat sink is found to be lower in variable area straight fins. In comparison to alternative configurations for heat transfer with PCM, the results show that variable area straight fin heat sinks are the most effective. The thermal resistance of the improved heat sink with variable fin density was reduced by 9%.
Investigation into tribological behaviour of AL7075 and AL7075 hybrid composites R Ashok Raj, R Pavendhan, B Kumaragurubaran Transactions of Famena, 2020 The aluminium metal matrix composite (AMMC) is widely used in aerospace and automotive applications. The AMMC reinforced with titanium diboride (TiB2), exhibits excellent tribological properties. In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was used as a reinforcement to improve the tribological properties of the Al7075-TiB2 composite. The Al7075 hybrid composites were produced with 12 wt% of TiB2 with varied mass loading of MoS2 (x = 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5) by using the powder metallurgy method. The energy dispersive Xray spectroscopy (EDX) test confirmed the presence of reinforcements. The Al7075 composites were examined for the study of microstructure, microhardness and tribological behaviour by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Vickers microhardness tester and pin-on-disc equipment, respectively. The tribological properties of Al7075 hybrid composites are superior to those of aluminium alloy Al7075. The low wear loss (10 mg) and coefficient of friction (0.109) were produced at the sliding velocity of 2 m/s, the sliding distance of 1000 m and the applied load of 5 N in the Al7075-12%TiB2-4.5%MoS2 composite.
