AbstractThe depositional ages and provenance of the Paleozoic Araba and Naqus Formations along the northern Gondwanan margin in Egypt have remained uncertain due to a lack of index fossils. Resolving this issue is crucial for understanding regional geology during deposition and subsequent tectonic development. We integrate detailed facies analysis, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), paleomagnetism, and mineralogical data to elucidate the genesis and depositional ages of the Araba and Naqus Formations. Petrographic analyses identified seven distinct facies types, providing insights into sedimentary textures, maturity, and sources, with contributions from igneous and metamorphic sources indicated by heavy minerals. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified accessory minerals such as quartz, goethite, kaolinite, hematite, and anatase. Paleomagnetism isolated two magnetic components (CA and CN) providing the first robust paleo pole positions at Lat. = 70.8° N, Long. = 308.2° E and Lat. = 37.8° N, Long. = 233.1° E, indicating Cambrian and Carboniferous ages for the Araba and Naqus formations, respectively. Thermal demagnetization constrained these dates using established polarity timescales. Mineralogical data indicated that the Araba Formation originated from an igneous source, while the Naqus Formation had a mixed metamorphic-igneous provenance. The integrated AMS and paleomagnetic data reveal evidence of post-depositional deformation. Specifically, the clustering of maximum AMS axes in the NW–SE direction for both formations, suggests the initial presence of a primary depositional fabric. However, prevalent tectonic activity during the Cenozoic appears to have overprinted and modified this fabric through deformation related to rifting of the Gulf of Suez region. Through this novel multi-proxy approach, we have resolved long-standing uncertainties regarding the formations' depositional ages. Our study thereby provides the first chronostratigraphic framework for these strategically important sedimentary units, significantly advancing understanding of regional Paleozoic geology. AbstractThe Egyptian lower Eocene carbonate rocks (Thebes Formation) are part of an extensive carbonate platform formed during an eustatic regression along the Tethyan Ocean's southern margin. These rocks are essential in developing Egypt's petroleum system because they can operate as vertical seals in specific basins or as source-reservoir rocks. However, few in-depth studies have been conducted to explore the diagenetic history, pore system, petrophysical characteristics, and sequence stratigraphic framework of these rocks and its relationship to the global sequences. Multiple datasets (foraminiferal assemblages, petrographic, and petrophysical data) from the lower Eocene strata exposed in Wadi El-Dakhl and El-Sheikh Fadl sections on the western side of the Gulf of Suez were integrated. The biostratigraphic examination of the planktic foraminifera shows that three Eocene biozones (E5–E7) were identified in the studied successions. The reservoir quality index and the flow zone indicator show that reservoir quality ranges from poor to fair and good. The primary reservoir porosity was resulted from diagenetic processes, including dissolution, fracturing, and meteoric diagenesis, which enhanced reservoir quality. The inferred benthic foraminifera and petrographic studies indicate a shallowing upward trend and deposition in fluctuating settings ranging from upper slope to middle shelf. This progressive reduction in the relative sea level corresponds to a gradual eustatic decline and demonstrates the enhanced control of tectonic activity and eustasy. Consequently, the Thebes Formation was deposited due to Tethyan sea-level changes, and its pore system was influenced by tectonics associated with the Syrian Arc system and Gulf of Suez rifting.

Monitoring the Deformation of the Western part of the Nile Delta, Egypt Using Sentinel-1A and Seismicity Data

The Egyptian Nile Delta is one of the world's most vital regions owing to its great agricultural, industrial, and economic value. Almost half of Egypt's population resides in this region, which has experienced significant land subsidence during the past decade. The present study evaluates the land deformation rate based on Sentinel-1A C-band synthetic aperture radar imagery on the western part of the Nile Delta. Due to the impact of the earthquake event in crete at magnitude of approximately 6.2 Mw on 19 October 2021, 6 scenes were selected to know the differential interferogram and vertical deformations. In our case study, Sentinel Application Platform processing techniques are applied to 6 Sentinel-1A images on 10 September, 4 October 2021, 13-25 October 2021 and 04-21 November 2021 before and after the occurrence of the earthquake, respectively. Our results show that some places in the western part of Nile Delta region experienced low–medium ground movement. To mitigate the seismic and kinetic effects in the western part of Delta, the construction of large factories near residential areas is discouraged. Moreover, urban expansion should be managed in these regions, and excessive groundwater extraction should be avoided in the arid regions near the western part of Nile delta.

Few studies on bio-sequence stratigraphy of the late Eocene succession in the study area have published so far. Accordingly, an exposed section of the Anqabiya Formation at Gebel Anqabiya along Cairo–Suez district of Egypt, was examined in detail to determine its foraminiferal and nannoplankton assemblages and to produce a sequence stratigraphic classification. We reveal that in this section, foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton are generally rare, with relatively poor to moderate preservation, and restricted to certain horizons. Nineteen species of planktonic foraminifera and 24 species of calcareous nannoplankton were identified, leading to the classification of two planktonic foraminiferal zones (Globigerinatheka semiinvoluta Zone E14 and Globigerinatheka index Zone E15) and one calcareous nannoplankton zone (NP19–20). Forty-seven species of benthic foraminifera were identified and quantitatively analyzed to determine changes in paleo-water depth. Three local benthic biofacies, the Elphidium biofacies, the Cibicides biofacies and the Uvigerina biofacies, were recognized, and six microfacies types were distinguished. These analyses indicate that the studied succession was deposited under shallow marine environmental conditions representing a single 3rd-order depositional sequence. The interpreted sea-level curve can be correlated with the global curves during the late Eocene, and the correlation suggests a sea-level rise during E14 Zone, followed by a sea-level fall in E15 zone.

ABSTRACT The Nukhul Formation is the oldest syn-rift rock unit in the Gulf of Suez rift system in Egypt. The age of the formation is inadequately resolved by biostratigraphy and it is generally assigned to the Lower Miocene by stratigraphic position. For this study a surface section was measured and sampled at Wadi Baba, located in the southwestern Sinai Peninsula. It yielded 17 planktonic foraminiferal species and 17 foraminiferal benthonic species. The planktonic foraminiferal assemblage was used to divide the formation into two planktonic foraminiferal zones: (1) Globigerina ciperoensis Zone (O6) of Late Oligocene Chattian age; and (2) Globigerinoides primordius Zone (M1) of Early Miocene Aquitanian age. The two zones coincide with depositional sequences: (1) Chattian Lower Nukhul Sequence, with its upper boundary coinciding with the Chattian/Aquitanian (Oligocene/Miocene) boundary; and (2) Aquitanian Upper Nukhul Sequence, with its upper sequence boundary coinciding with the Aquitanian/Burdigalian boundary.
