When Precision Backfires: How AI Price Presentation Shapes Perceived Price Discrimination Eunji Lee, Jungkeun Kim, Chulmo Koo Journal of Travel Research, 2026 This study investigates how price precision from an AI recommendation agent affects tourists’ perceptions of price discrimination and their behavioral responses, depending on dispositional cognitive trust in AI competence. Drawing from psychological pricing and AI–consumer interaction research, four experiments in airline booking contexts were conducted. Results reveal that precise prices presented by AI increase perceived price discrimination, which lowers recommendation acceptance and raises negative word-of-mouth intentions. These effects occur only in AI price presentation contexts and vanish when the same prices are shown by human or company. Additionally, dispositional cognitive trust in AI competence moderates the process: consumers with low trust are more likely to perceive precise AI prices as discriminatory, while this effect weakens for high-trust consumers. This study advances behavioral pricing research in AI price presentation as a novel psychological cue shaping discrimination inferences. In practice, it offers guidance for designing psychologically sensitive AI price communication strategies.
A sociotechnical perspective on metaverse in the hospitality and tourism Seunghun Shin, Jiyong Park, Jungkeun Kim, Chulmo Koo International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, 2026 Purpose This study aims to propose a conceptual framework for metaverse tourism from a sociotechnical perspective, highlighting the interactions between metaverse technological capabilities and travelers’ behaviors to enhance the understanding of tourism experiences in the metaverse, and suggesting research opportunities to further advance the discourse on metaverse tourism. Design/methodology/approach A framework for metaverse tourism is developed by applying a sociotechnical perspective to the contexts of hospitality and tourism. This framework is based on a review of the literature on the metaverse in the fields of hospitality and tourism, marketing and information systems. Findings Existing frameworks on metaverse tourism have emphasized experiential dimensions and motivations, often overlooking the technological factors that shape user decisions. The proposed framework identifies the key technological capabilities and digital infrastructure in metaverse tourism that influence travelers’ behaviors. It also highlights the interconnections between the virtual and physical worlds via smart tourism layers, shaping immersive and absorptive involvement. Research limitations/implications This study identifies new research opportunities and highlights potential applications of metaverse tourism in the field of hospitality and tourism. Originality/value This study introduces a novel sociotechnical framework for understanding metaverse tourism, offering insights into how tourism experiences emerge from the interplay between technological capabilities and traveler behaviors.
Hyperloop’s role in tourism and hospitality: Challenges and opportunities Sung-Eun Kang, Emrullah Erul, Namho Chung, Myung Ja Kim, Chulmo Koo Tourism and Hospitality Research, 2026 This study provides a comprehensive examination of the potential impacts of Hyperloop technology on the tourism and hospitality sectors, offering strategic insights for stakeholders to address upcoming challenges and opportunities. Through an extensive literature review, we identify several ways in which Hyperloop travel could transform these sectors. Potential benefits include enabling seamless multi-destination day trips, promoting culinary tourism, enhancing the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, and generating employment around Hyperloop hubs. However, Hyperloop may also reduce bookings in traditional accommodations, decrease interest in conventional air and rail travel, limit tourist exploration to destinations within the Hyperloop network, and decline in travel expenditure in a specific location. These findings have significant practical implications, providing valuable guidance to tourism and hospitality businesses and policymakers as they prepare for the commercialization of Hyperloop technology.
