Determining the Dilatancy of Gravels Using a Large-size Direct Shear Test Jakub Stacho, Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava 810 05, Slovakia Jordan Journal of Civil Engineering, 2024 The peak shear strength of dense coarse-grained soils is defined by the angle of the shear strength, the initial shear strength, and the angle of dilatancy. This paper mainly focuses on determining the angle of dilatancy. This parameter has been investigated by many researchers on sands or sand-gravel mixtures. The study aims to determine the dilatancy angle of various types of gravel soils using a large-size direct shear test. The results demonstrated that the dilatancy angle decreases with an increase in the normal stress. The gravels tested were separated into 8 groups based on the type of gravel, the fraction, and the shape of the grains. The relation between the dilatancy angle and the normal stress was correlated using a power function for each gravel group. The results also showed that simplified assumptions of the dilatancy angle, which are usually applied in the design of geotechnical structures, can lead to a determination of a higher value of the dilatancy angle than that determined by laboratory measurement. A simple correlation is presented, which allows for determining the angle of dilatancy from the peak and the critical angle of the shear strength in a given normal stress range. Stability Analysis of Waste Landfills on Potentially Unstable Territory Dagmar Chropeňová, Ivan Slávik, Ľuboš Hruštinec Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2024 The article presents the stability analysis of two adjacent waste landfills located in a potentially unstable territory. One of the waste landfills is reclaimed and consists of ash. Municipal solid waste is actively deposited in the second landfill. In the space between the landfills, the expansion of the municipal solid waste landfill is planned, with a partial overlap of the reclaimed ash landfill. The instability of the area where the landfills are located is due to its susceptibility to the formation of landslides. The article presents the results of experimental verifications of the peak shear strength parameters of the ashes and the peak and residual shear strength of the soils forming the subsoil of both landfills and serve as input for stability analyses. The shear strength parameters of municipal waste are defined on the basis of literature research. The potential instability of both waste landfill territories was taken into account using the parameters of the residual shear strength of the subsoil. The stability analysis of waste landfills is expressed using both the peak and residual shear strength parameters of the subsoil of waste landfills. In addition, the effect of seismic loading on both landfills is considered in the stability analysis.
Anisotropic viscoelastic body subjected to the pulsating load Jozef Sumec, Mária Minárová, Luboš Hruštinec Applications of Mathematics, 2023 summary:Constitutive equations of continuum mechanics of the solid phase of anisotropic material is focused in the paper. First, a synoptic one-dimensional Maxwell model is explored, subjected to arbitrary deformation load. The explicit form is derived for stress on strain dependence. Further, the analogous explicit constitutive equation is taken in three spatial dimensions and treated mathematically. Later on, a simply supported straight concrete beam reinforced by the steel fibres is taken as an investigated domain. The reinforcement is considered and dealt as scattered within the beam. Material characteristics are determined in line with the theory of the reinforcement. Sinusoidal load is taken as the action, stress reaction function is observed. By exploitation of the Fourier transform within the stress-strain relation analysis, both time and frequency interpretation of the constitutive relation can be performed.
Geotechnical analysis of transforming a water management structure to a transportation structure Ivan Slávik, Luboš Hruštinec Acta Polytechnica Ctu Proceedings, 2021 This paper analyzes the transformation of the culvert channel under the supply channel of the Gabcíkovo Waterworks into a road tunnel structure and the impact this had on the surrounding rock environment. It presents the engineering-geological conditions in the area, the current structuralmaterial characteristics of the culvert channel and its proposed transformation into a road tunnel. The results of the geotechnical analysis, realized through numeric modelling, are presented as a comparison of deformation changes in the rock environment with respect to changes in loading states corresponding with functional changes in the analyzed culvert.
