My primary research focuses include science evaluation, scientometrics, bibliometrics, altmetrics, and general science evaluation practices. My doctoral research proposes an alternative model for evaluating the field of Social Sciences. Interdisciplinary Theoretical Model for Research Evaluation in the Social Sciences Based on the Categories of Subject, Society and Culture Roelvis Ortiz-Núñez, Jazmín Sugey Santa-Álvarez Social Sciences, 2026 This article develops a conceptual interdisciplinary model for research evaluation in the Social Sciences based on three core categories: Subject, Society, and Culture. It argues that conventional evaluation systems rely too heavily on quantitative metrics and, as a result, fail to capture the contextual, social, and epistemic complexity of knowledge production in this field. Drawing on an interdisciplinary analysis informed by complex thought and postcolonial theory, the article proposes a framework in which Subject refers to situated reflexivity and the role of relevant actors, Society emphasizes social relevance and public embeddedness, and Culture highlights epistemic plurality, local knowledge, and contextual legitimacy. The model is represented as a dynamic spiral, which underscores the revisable and context-sensitive character of evaluation. As a theoretical-conceptual contribution, the framework offers an alternative basis for broadening research assessment in the Social Sciences beyond productivity-driven and citation-based approaches.
Alternative metrics and social impact of research about Social Sciences in Cuba Roelvis Ortiz Núñez, Érika Jaillier Castrillón Research Evaluation, 2024 The evaluation of the social impact of research is a critical concern for both the scientific and social communities. This study aims to describe the social impact of scientific research outcomes in the field of Social Sciences in Cuba. Five dimensions of analysis and 16 alternative indicators were utilized, employing altmetric tools and data sources. The data for the study were collected from the Scopus database and the altmetric data provider PlumX Metrics. Statistical techniques for trend and correlation analysis between indicators, along with data visualization, were used for the analysis. The results indicate that the most prominent indicators were citations in Scopus and CrossRef, Views Count, Full Text Views, Abstract Views, Readers in Mendeley Captures, and social network metrics from Facebook and Twitter. The research findings with the greatest social impact pertained to climate change and environmental policy, scientific production related to COVID-19, higher education, sustainable development, gender studies, legislation, and tourism.
Indicators for the Evaluation of Science, Technology and Innovation Activities: A Systematized Review Roelvis Ortiz-Núñez, Stephany Novo-Castro, Ricardo Casate-Fernández Journal of Scientometric Research, 2023 The article aimed to develop a systematic review of the scientific literature about indicators for the evaluation of science, technology and innovation activities. For this, the Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were used. Through the application of the SysteRe-HSS methodology, 96 publications were selected that formed the basis for a descriptive model of the science, technology and innovation indicators. The results of the research showed that there is a predominance of indicators related to the evaluation of innovation activities, human resources allocated to the activity of science, technology and innovation, financial resources and investments in research plus development, and indicators related to bibliometrics and scientometrics. However, challenges are faced related to measuring indicators of social innovation, linking insights from existing innovation measurement approaches with the essential features of social innovation, measuring the impact of social appropriation practices of science and technology, and the next generation metrics, responsible metrics and evaluation for open science, as well as alternative indicators for the evaluation of the social impact of research in web 2.0.
Altmetric analysis of COVID-19 research published in 2020 Roelvis Ortiz-Núñez Revista Espanola De Documentacion Cientifica, 2022 La alarmante propagación de la COVID-19 ha generado una producción científica sin precedentes en respuesta a la búsqueda de tratamientos y vacunas que ayuden a frenar la pandemia. Los medios de comunicación, las redes sociales y científicas se han convertido en un escenario primordial para la difusión de publicaciones académicas y, en consecuencia, en herramientas potenciales para evaluar el impacto social de la investigación sobre la COVID-19. El presente trabajo propone analizar el impacto y uso de las publicaciones en redes sociales y científicas mediante el empleo de indicadores altmétricos. Se emplean como herramientas las bases de datos Dimensions y Altmetric.com para el análisis de la producción científica y la atención en línea recibida. Los resultados evidencian un predominio de las menciones de Twitter, seguidos por las lecturas y citas en Mendeley y Dimensions. Los temas con mayor atención se relacionaron con tratamientos, vías de transmisión, síntomas, muertes y vacunas.

Evolution and trends in communication research about epidemics and pandemics at the international level Roelvis Ortiz Núñez, Yudayly Stable Rodríguez Revista De Comunicacion, 2021 La investigación sobre comunicación en tiempos de epidemias y pandemias constituye un factor trascendental en la prevención, tratamiento y recuperación. El estudio que se presenta analiza el comportamiento de la investigación en comunicación sobre epidemias y pandemias a través de la producción científica registrada en la base de datos Scopus. Se emplean indicadores para evaluar las tendencias generales de publicación a nivel de país, instituciones, autores, revistas y artículos. Se examinan los temas preponderantes y su evolución temporal, así como, la evolución en los grupos y frentes de investigación asociados. Los resultados muestran una tendencia al crecimiento de publicaciones con una mayor concentración en el 2020. El número de publicaciones por países, instituciones, autores y revistas es discreto, por lo que, es un área de conocimientos que requiere mayor investigación científica y colaboración internacional. Se identificaron 5 grandes grupos temáticos, principales focos emergentes de investigación, relacionados con la comunicación de salud durante epidemias, las actitudes sociales hacia la salud, la comunicación durante la influenza A H1N1 y la pandemia COVID-19 y la información epidemiológica en redes sociales. Los puntos críticos de investigación en el campo durante los 30 años registrados en la base de datos Scopus permiten inferir, que la comunicación sobre epidemias y pandemias debe convertirse en foco de la investigación en el área de comunicación de riesgos en un futuro próximo.
