Assessment of induced residual stresses and microstructure of Al/B4C/FA composite extruded by equal channel angular pressing Tiba Qahtan Irhayyim, Jabbar Gattmah Advances in Science and Technology Research Journal, 2025 This research evaluates the residual stresses and microstructure of rods fabricated from a hybrid aluminum matrix composite (Al1050/B 4 C/FA). The rod composite is subjected to various passes (cycles) using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature. Channel angles of 120° and 135° with pass numbers of 1P, 2P, 3P, 4P, 5P, and 6P are used to investigate the induced residual stresses (IRS) and examine the microstructure. The de - structive cutting technique (CT) is employed to assess the state of IRS in the axial direction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to check the microstructure before and after severe plastic deformation (SPD). The results show that the values of residual stresses tend to increase due to the effects of SPD compared to the casting composite. As the ECAP cycles increase, the magnitudes of residual stresses start to change; the compressive state of residual stresses is near the rod surface, while the stresses are in tensile state near the center of the composite rod. The cycles of ECAP significantly impact the grain size reduction. The smallest grain size is observed at a die angle of 120° after 6 ECAP passes, measuring between 1 and 8 µm, while the grain size for the casted rods ranged from 4 to 15 µm.
Influence of applied coating time on nano hydroxyapatite/ chitosan coating on 316L stainless steel alloy using electrophoretic deposition for biomedical application Aya Muhsin Hazber, Ayad Naseef Jassim, Jabbar Qassim Gattmah, Jaber Kasem Kutm, Fatemeh Poorsalehi Advances in Science and Technology Research Journal, 2025 In this work, an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method was utilized to cover a biocompatible stainless steel medical grid type 316L with nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite (HA). ln conjunction with the biopolymer chitosan (CHT), as a binder, it enhances the adhesive capabilities of a substrate. The chosen bio-coating method is the EPD process of 316L Stainless Steel alloy due to its ease of use, low cost, and capacity to coat intricate items. Consequently, this research studied different concentrations of the materials utilized, the most significant variables, and their effects in order to acquire the optimal attributes for the coating layer, using voltage applied and deposition time. The coating periods were 2, 4 and 6 minutes, and the concentrations were 4, 7 and 10 g/L, while the voltages were modulated between 20, 40, and 60 volts. In spite of the fact that the metallic medical applications and bone replacement have made substantial and fruitful progress, difficulties still persist. The coating procedures have a significant impact on how well the composite materials work in the biological devices. To improve the properties of composites used in biomedicine, coating them is an essential step. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the deposited coatings, and the Zeta potential for suspensions was computed.
Application of Polymeric Materials for 3D Printed Dentures: A review Alaa Raad Ali, Suha Shihab, Sheymaa Alazzawi, Jabbar Gattmah Diyala Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2024 The development of three-dimensional printing technology (3D printing) has revolutionized the dental industry by providing a rapid, dependable, and affordable way to create a variety of dental products, including denture bases. This review article presents in-depth research on polymeric materials and their effect on different properties and aspects of dentures manufactured by 3D printing processes. This study indicated that Poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) is a popular material in the 3D printing process of dentures. Despite its widespread use in dentures, more research is required to overcome some disadvantages like brittleness and poor mechanical qualities by utilizing additives to this material for improvement. The polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has remarkable mechanical and thermal properties and is perfect for dentures. A variety of medical and dental applications can benefit from Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) toughness and chemical resistance, our review investigation uncovered several potential applications of ABS for printed dentures. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer derived from renewable resources and it has been used in dentures. However, additional study is required to enhance its performance in dentures. Furthermore, it was found that the most appropriate 3D printing technology for denture printing is the vat photopolymerization process. Advances in material qualities are assisting in the durable and biocompatible dental prostheses that meet the evolving needs of patients and doctors. Furthermore, in-depth evaluations of environmental sustainability and biocompatibility are essential for advancing the discipline ethically and responsibly.
Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of Al1050/Al2O3/Gr composite processed by forming operation ECAP Alhassan Mohammed Hassan, Jabbar Gattmah, Suha K. Shihab Open Engineering, 2024 Enhancement of microstructure and mechanical features of the hybrid aluminum matrix composite (HAMC) prepared by the stir-casting process (SCP) is quite significant for failure prevention during the service. In this work, the circular rod of hybrid aluminum matrix composite reinforced with particles of alumina (Al2O3) 50 μm, and graphite (Gr) 40–100 µm fabricated by SCP was adopted. This Al1050/Al2O3/Gr composite was subjected to severe plastic deformation using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature to show the impact of this process on the microstructure and mechanical features of the fabricated composite. Grain refinement, strength, and hardness were evaluated at different forming passes (1P, 3P, and 5P) with two channel angles (die angles) of 120° and 135°. The results revealed that the number of ECAP cycles has a significant effect on the refinement of the grain size. The fifth pass of ECAP (5P ECAP) with a die angle of 120° gave more refinement of the grains in the range of 36–75 nm compared to other passes. On the other hand, the strength and hardness relatively augment until 5P ECAP with increasing the cycle number at two die angles of 120° and 135°. The ultrafine grain can reduce the voids of the aluminum matrix then the hardness is enhanced.
Estimation of induced residual stresses and corrosion behavior of machined Inconel 718 superalloy: 3D-FE simulation and optimization Khalaf Nasralla, Suha K. Shihab, Adel K. Mahmoud, Jabbar Gattmah International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Engineering, 2022 Nickel super alloys like Inconel 718 characterize a significant metal part in the structures of aircraft and engine components. The high reliability levels are the major conditions during the manufacturing of these essential structural components in aerospace production. Surface integrity is the most important factor considered for estimating the quality of machined surfaces in term of finishing as well as strongly effect on the corrosion behavior of the machined surface. In this study, three-dimensional (3D)-finite element (3D-FE) simulations were accomplished to determine induced residual stresses in machined Inconel 718 alloy. 3D simulations were executed in the sequential successive method using the design of experiments (DOEs) based on Taguchi L9 technique. Subsequently, a veritable turning was implemented based on the selected Taguchi design to validate the simulation results. Also, the efficiency of independent parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) on the surface integrity (surface roughness, microhardness, induced residual stresses), and corrosion rate of the machined surface were explored experimentally. Based on analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was obtained that the feed rate is the most relevant factor related to surface roughness and corrosion rate while cutting speed is the most relevant factor related to microhardness and induced residual stresses. The analyzed polarization curves confirmed that the reducing surface roughness and increasing induced compressive residual stresses are robustly related to enhancing the corrosion behavior of Inconel 718. Robust agreement was detected between the predicted and measured data. The optimal values of independent parameters that led to optimal surface integrity and minimum value of corrosion rate were found. Based on the revealed simulation results, the 3D-FE simulation of the turning process afforded consistent data as compared to experimental measurements for the wide range of induced residual stresses.
