Enhancing surface quality of M300 maraging steel components produced via selective laser melting: a comparison of tumbling techniques Abdesselam Mechali, Josef Hlinka, Michal Sajgalik, Jiri Hajnys, Jan Zelinka, et al. Progress in Additive Manufacturing, 2026 This study investigates the effects of centrifugal and vibratory tumbling on the surface quality of M300 maraging steel components produced using Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Surface roughness is a critical issue in SLM, impacting mechanical properties and overall performance. To address this, two abrasive finishing methods were applied using ceramic, plastic, and porcelain media. Evaluations were performed using 2D and 3D surface roughness measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and wettability analysis. Centrifugal tumbling, particularly with ceramic media, demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing surface roughness, achieving an Sa value as low as 0.39 μm. In contrast, vibratory tumbling showed limited improvement. EDS analysis highlighted a reduction in titanium content and an increase in silicon concentration, likely due to surface layer removal and media interaction. Wettability analysis further confirmed enhanced surface properties, with a reduced contact angle of 60°, promoting better adhesion. These findings emphasize the superiority of centrifugal tumbling for enhancing surface quality in SLM-printed M300 maraging steel components. This cost-effective post-processing technique offers practical applications for industries seeking improved surface integrity and functional performance in critical components.
Continuous Filament Fabrication Technology and Its Mechanical Properties for Thin-Walled Component Tomasz Kozior, Jerzy Bochnia, Jiri Hajnys, Jakub Mesicek Materials, 2026 The aim of the presented research is to assess the possibility of manufacturing thin-walled models using innovative 3D printing technology and to determine limitations. This article presents the results of tensile tests of the Continuous Filament Fabrication (CFF) technology for thin-walled sample models. Two types of materials were tested. The first material is pure ONYX based on polyamide, and the second is ONYX with an additional core made of carbon fiber. The paper presents the limitations of using the core in thin-walled structures, and for pure ONYX material, samples were made with different orientations on the 3D printer platform, which allowed determining the effect of the printing direction on the mechanical properties of the samples. In addition, microscopic photographs of the fracture of the broken samples were taken in the paper, based on which the defects of the technological process were identified. It was shown that the strength of thin-walled samples (1 mm, 1.4 mm, and 1.8 mm thick) printed in the Y direction is significantly greater than that of samples printed in the X and Z directions. For example, for 1 mm thick samples printed in the Y direction, the strength is 49.02 MPa, while for samples printed in the X and Z directions, it is 27.71 MPa and 21.28 MPa, respectively. The strength of samples (4 mm thick) reinforced with ONYX + OCF carbon fiber printed in the X direction is 191.36% greater than that of samples made of pure ONYX.
A review on support-free printing with powder bed fusion method Jiri Hajnys, Quoc-Phu Ma, Radoslav Vandzura, Matus Gelatko, Jakub Mesicek, et al. Progress in Additive Manufacturing, 2026 Powder bed fusion (PBF) is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique that employs localized laser energy to fuse metallic powders in a layer-by-layer manner to construct a 3D object. Aside from the high design freedom in the shape, the technology is constrained by the need for support structures, particularly for low-angle overhangs. These unsupported areas are prone to significant residual stresses, and surface defects, such as warpage and dross formation, primarily owing to poor heat dissipation and rapid solidification. In view of this, this review critically examines the current body of the published literature focused on support-free PBF printing and the mechanisms underlying overhang printability. The bibliometric review was conducted on the literature related to the topic of support-free printing on Web of Sciences database between 2008 and 2025. From the limited number of publications, it can be observed that most concentrate on optimization of the downskin printing, while some others explore the alternative solutions. Nevertheless, there is a lack of systematic and repeatable strategy for reliable support-free printing. In conclusion, this paper consolidates scattered information to provide a theoretical foundation for PBF overhang challenges, outlines different strategies for achieving support-free printing, and presents selected case studies to serve as inspiration for practitioners printing metal components with PBF.
