  • A method for prediction of creeping slopes by viscohypoplasticity
    Jan Jerman, David Mašín
    Landslides, 2026
This study presents a comprehensive framework for predicting and reproducing the rate of slope movements in creeping slow-moving landslides. By employing an advanced viscohypoplastic constitutive model, the framework is capable of accounting for the mechanical behaviour of soil and changes in groundwater levels, and is able to effectively detect spatial and rate variability in landslide processes. The model’s predictive performance is first validated through a detailed parametric analysis using finite element models of an idealized slope, incorporating site-relevant material parameters and groundwater level fluctuations. The integration of groundwater level oscillations demonstrated its impact on displacement rates, particularly during extreme events. The framework is then applied, as a proof of concept, to a real-world case of a creeping slope in the Prackovice landslide area, where a 2D finite element model of the area identified critical zones with excessive deformations. Calibration of viscous parameters and OCR was based on back-analysis of inclinometer measurements, while other soil parameters were determined experimentally. This framework offers a valuable tool for land management, infrastructure safety and mitigating the socio-economic impacts of landslides by determining the spatio-temporal evolution of slow-moving landslides.

  • Hypoplastic and viscohypoplastic models for soft clays with strength anisotropy
    Jan Jerman, David Mašín
International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2020
This paper presents a new viscohypoplastic model for soft clays accounting for their typical features—strength anisotropy and rate dependency. The model is based on the hypoplastic model for clays enhanced by the anisotropic shape of the asymptotic state boundary surface. It has been shown that if the surface is skewed, the model predicts different ultimate strength in compression and in extension. Additional enhancement makes the tensor L bilinear in the strain rate, which more realistically predicts the stress paths of K0 consolidated samples. The new model has been evaluated by simulating laboratory experiments on soft marine clays (Singapore and Bangkok clays). The model can be easily calibrated using only undrained triaxial and odometer tests. The model is subsequently enhanced by the rate effects. The resulting viscohypoplastic model has been evaluated using experiments of remolded kaolin clay and St. Herblain clay. It is shown that the enhanced model can predict important features of soil viscous behavior, such as rate dependency of strength and preconsolidation pressure, relaxation, and creep.
