Magneto-optical properties of heavily Fe-doped GaAs: a density functional approach J. Zarpellon, D. H. Mosca, J. Varalda Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 2024 Heavily Fe-doped GaAs, investigated using a DFT approach, reveals a spin polarized electronic band structure correlated with magnetic circular dichroism and complex Kerr and Faraday rotation angles in agreement with some previous experiments.
Ferromagnetism in heavily Fe-doped GaAs: a DFT study J Zarpellon, D H Mosca, J Varalda Physica Scripta, 2024 Computational calculations based on density functional theory were carried out to investigate ferromagnetism in gallium arsenide (GaAs) heavily doped with Fe atoms that can substitutionally occupy gallium (Ga) or arsenic (As) sites in the zinc-blende-like crystal structure. The calculations were performed within the spin polarized density functional theory (DFT) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. We investigate and discuss the ab initio calculation results focusing on properties intrinsically important for spintronic applications, such as spin polarization and magnetic anisotropy. The density of states (DOS) was calculated with substitution of Fe atoms in the As and Ga sites, giving the electronic properties, as well as the magnetic ground state. According to DFT calculations, heavily doped GaAs with 25 at. % of Fe becomes a ferromagnetic metal with spin polarization as high as 69% at Fermi level. This is corroborated by experimental results previously published in literature.

Unveiling ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in two dimensions at room temperature Ravel de Moraes Telles Araujo, Juliana Zarpellon, Dante Homero Mosca Journal of Physics D Applied Physics, 2022 The aim of this work is to present an overview and a critical discussion on two-dimensional materials and functional nanostructures exhibiting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic long-range ordering at or above room temperature (RT). We specially describe and discuss the series of results concerning two-dimensional magnetism originated from intrinsic and induced d magnetic moments in low-dimensional nanostructured materials. Selected materials showing two-dimensional magnetic properties close to RT are classified as atomic monolayers, natural and artificial van der Waals layers, magneto-lamellar intermetallic compounds, and nanostructured materials containing native and artificially created defects that originate magnetic moments in networks with two-dimensional interconnectivity. To make the point on these materials, we describe their atomic and electronic structures as well as magnetic interaction mechanisms responsible for magnetic behavior. Theoretical backgrounds for understanding the correlations between structure and magnetic properties are examined. Special emphasis on the possible applications of two-dimensional magnetism for developments of new devices in the fields of spintronics, spin-orbitronics, magnonics, valleytronics and twistronics, among other emergent technologies are discussed.
Magnetization switching and deterministic nucleation in Co/Ni multilayered disks induced by spin-orbit torques N. Figueiredo-Prestes, S. Krishnia, S. Collin, Y. Roussigné, M. Belmeguenai, et al. Applied Physics Letters, 2021 We present experimental and numerical results on the magnetization reversal induced by spin–orbit torques of micronic disks of a ferromagnetic multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy on top of a Pt track: Pt (6 nm)/[Co(0.2 nm)/Ni(0.6 nm)] × 5/Al(5 nm). The current induced magnetization switching process is probed by anomalous Hall effect measurements and Kerr microscopy. The electrical characterization reveals the critical current for the complete reversal to be about 3×1011 A/m2, and Kerr microscopy uncovers a deterministic nucleation that depends on current and field polarity. Through the use of experimental switching phase diagrams coupled to micromagnetic simulations, we evaluated the field-like to damping-like torque ratio to be 0.73 ± 0.05, which is in good agreement with experimental values observed by second harmonic measurements. These measurements emphasize an unexpectedly large field-like contribution in this relatively thick Co/Ni multilayer (4 nm). In light of these experiments and simulations, we discuss the key parameters needed to understand the magnetization reversal, namely, the field and damping-like torques and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction.

Stabilization and tuning of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in room-temperature ferromagnetic transparent CeO2 films Nicholas Figueiredo-Prestes, Ronei C. Oliveira, Mariana A. B. Tavares, Daniel S. Costa, Irineu Mazzaro, et al. Journal of Applied Physics, 2019 The development of multifunctional materials that combine optical transparency to room-temperature magnetism is still a great challenge. Here, we present an investigation on the room-temperature ferromagnetism of ceria (CeO2) nanocrystalline films integrated to cobalt and platinum multilayered films (Co/Pt-ML) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The magnetic coupling between Co/Pt-ML and CeO2 films spaced by Pt interlayers with different thicknesses (from 3 nm to 20 nm) enable stabilization and tuning of PMA along with the stacking at remanence. CeO2 films on the Co/Pt-ML films exhibit domain structures consisting of nonconnected labyrinthine patterns dominated by protruding fingers similar to that of individual Co/Pt-ML films. Our present results demonstrate that the PMA of Co/Pt-ML films can be used to exploit the room-temperature ferromagnetism of transparent CeO2 films and their multifunctionalities for emerging transparent electronics and spintronics such as high-density magnetic devices.
