In this work fluid dynamics and a basic study of the sulfur transfer at the steel/slag interface in the ladle during argon gas agitation was developed. Mass transfer and chemical reaction models coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were employed. The multiphasic simulation was solved using the Eulerian model considering drag and non-drag forces, and the flow pattern was validated through Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The sulfur transfer rate was tracked by two approximations: (1) unidirectional constant rate Mass Transfer Model (MTM), and (2) unidirectional constant rate Mass Transfer Model coupled with Chemical Reaction Model (MTM+CRM) using Arrhenius equation. It was found that including the non-drag forces affects the fluid dynamics structure. Otherwise, the desulfurization rates increase as the argon gas flow rate increases, finding that the MTM model predicts ~15% less sulfur in the steel than the MTM+CRM, whose results were compared with plant measurements reports.

In the present work, the release of tracer location on the global mixing time in an agitated ladle furnace by gas bottom injection was analyzed. Then, a numerical multiphasic steel-slag-argon-air system of a prototype with a capacity of 150 tons was carried out. The simulation was validated by using a physical model with a 1/6 geometric scale using colorant, KCl dispersion measurements techniques and open slag eye opening. Four different tracer addition locations were strategically established to study the influence of tracer releasing location on chemical homogenization. From the results, it was found that the measurement of mixing times varies according to the location of the tracer addition, which to a greater extent is conditioned by the convective currents that at some extent were related to turbulent viscosity.

This work presents a comparative numerical study of the effect of using baffles, and its design, on the behavior of sloshing in a partially filled road tanker carrying LPG. Navier-Stokes equations and standardk-εturbulence model are used to simulate fluid movement; the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used to track the liquid-gas interface. Velocity distributions, sloshing stabilization times, and contours of turbulent kinetic energy, which are of high importance in choosing the best design of baffles, are shown. The results show sloshing stabilization times of 22 and 21 s for road tankers with cross-shaped (Type I) and X-shaped (Type II) baffles, respectively, finding lower values of turbulent kinetic energy for Type II design, being, therefore, the best design of baffles for damping of sloshing and vehicle control among studied ones.
  • Effect of the operating conditions of air-mist nozzles on the thermal evolution of continuosly cast thin slabs

AbstractAbstractCommonly. the secondary cooling provided by air-mist nozzles is regulated by varying the water flow rate while maintaining constant air nozzle pressure. However, these cooling elements are more flexible since, as demonstrated in laboratory experiments, an increase in the air pressure, particularly from a typical value of 200 kPa to 250-400 kPa, causes a considerable increase in the boiling heat flux for a given impact water flux. Based on this finding, previous empirical correlations for the heat flux generated by air-mist nozzles impinging on hot surfaces were extended to include the effect of the air pressure. The correlations were then implemented into a transient 2-D heat conduction model to investigate the influence of new cooling conditions on the surface temperature and metallurgical length of the strand and ultimately on the possibility of increasing the casting speed, i.e., productivity. The model highlighted the potential of the new conditions and this was confirmed by plant results. Additional support to the usefulness of the correlations emerged from the accurate predictions that the model can achieve regarding the temperature evolution of the strand during transient operating conditions, such as during changes in casting speed, slab width, casting temperature and/or steel grade. The fact that the correlations did not need calibration emphasizes the importance of the appropriate characterization of spray and air-mist cooling to develop robust, flexible and accurate virtual casting machines for exploring and controlling the operation of real ones.
