Upcycling 3D Printing PLA Waste into Functional Electrospun Membranes: Effect of Polymer Concentration on Morphology, Surface Properties and Particle Filtration Efficiency Manuel J. Torres-Calla, Geraldine Denise Bazan-Panana, Fatimah N. Jacinto, Diego E. Velásquez, J. I. Gonzáles-Coronel, et al. Polymers, 2026 This study investigates the reutilization of polylactic acid (PLA) waste generated by 3D printing through its transformation into electrospun membranes with tunable morphological, surface, thermal, and filtration properties. Polymer solutions containing 5–10 wt % recycled PLA were prepared in a dichloromethane/dimethylformamide system and characterized in terms of viscosity and electrical conductivity. Increasing PLA concentration raised solution viscosity (41.87–339.83 mPa·s) and reduced conductivity (7.63–1.63 µS·cm−1), promoting the formation of bead-free fibers with larger diameters (0.221–1.213 µm) and enhanced hydrophobicity (contact angles 112.34–124.38°). FTIR confirmed preservation of the polymer chemical structure after recycling and electrospinning, while DSC revealed reduced crystallinity in the fibrous membranes. Exploratory correlation analysis indicated consistent associations between solution properties, fiber morphology, and wettability. Increasing the number of electrospun layers (1–3) generated denser networks with reduced pore size and improved particle retention. Filtration tests conducted under controlled airflow conditions (85 L min−1, 1 cm s−1 frontal velocity, 50 cm2 effective area) showed removal efficiencies above 90% for PM2.5 and PM5, while PM1 capture improved with increasing membrane thickness. Quality factor analysis highlighted the trade-off between filtration efficiency and pressure drop, identifying intermediate multilayer configurations as providing a favorable balance. These findings demonstrate that electrospinning offers an effective strategy for converting recycled PLA into structurally tunable membranes with adjustable filtration performance, supporting sustainable valorization of additive manufacturing waste.
Epitaxial Growth of Ni-Mn-Ga on Al2O3(11(Formula Presented.)0) Single-Crystal Substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition Manuel G. Pinedo-Cuba, José M. Caicedo-Roque, Jessica Padilla-Pantoja, Justiniano Quispe-Marcatoma, Carlos V. Landauro, et al. Surfaces, 2025 Magnetic shape memory alloys have attracted considerable attention due to their multifunctional properties. Among these materials, Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are distinguished by their ability to achieve up to 10% strain when exposed to a magnetic field, a characteristic predominantly observed in single-crystal samples. Consequently, it is essential to develop nanomaterials with a crystal structure closely resembling that of a single crystal. In this study, an epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga thin film was fabricated using Pulsed Laser Deposition on an Al2O3 (112¯0) single-crystal substrate. The crystal structure was characterised through X-ray diffraction methodologies, such as symmetrical 2θ−ω scans, pole figures, and reciprocal space maps. The results indicated that the sample was mainly in a slightly distorted cubic austenite phase, and some incipient martensite phase also appeared. A detailed microstructural analysis, performed by transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that certain regions of the sample exhibited an incipient transformation to the martensite phase. Regions closer to the substrate retained the austenite phase, suggesting that the constraint imposed by the substrate inhibits the phase transition. These results indicate that it is possible to grow high crystalline quality thin films of Ni-Mn-Ga by Pulsed Laser Deposition.
Textile Characteristics, Medullation, and Colorimetry of Wool Fiber Dyed with Dactylopius coccus Using Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet (APPJ) Arturo Quispe-Quispe, Franklin Lozano, Virgilio Machaca-Machaca, Justiniano Quispe-Marcatoma Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2025 The industrial and artisanal textile industries necessitate the adoption of sustainable dyeing practices. Although the natural dye derived from Dactylopius coccus presents a viable option, its traditional application requires metallic mordants that pose environmental and health risks. This study investigates the utilization of atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) technology for dyeing wool with Dactylopius coccus dye, with the objective of optimizing the process and minimizing its environmental impact. The APPJ technique was employed for wool dyed with Dactylopius coccus dye, and the textile properties, medullation, and colorimetry were evaluated using an optical fiber diameter analyzer (OFDA) and a spectrometer with an integrating sphere. The results demonstrated that the APPJ enhanced the color intensity and uniformity, facilitating improved dye penetration into the fibers. Plasma treatment darkened the fiber, generated reddish and yellowish tones, and increased the color saturation and intensity. The wool samples treated with plasma exhibited an increase in DMF and SF but a decrease in IC and greater size variability. The APPJ reduces total medullation in wool dyed with cochineal dye. In conclusion, the APPJ was demonstrated to be a promising method for dyeing wool with Dactylopius coccus dye, offering an effective and sustainable alternative to traditional methods, with enhanced color vibrancy and uniformity and reduced resource utilization.
Synthesis and characterization of silver clusters deposited by magnetron sputtering on graphene systems J A Castañeda-Vía, L Akashi, M Yactayo, C V Landauro, J Quispe-Marcatoma, et al. Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2025 In this work, we show graphene bilayer and graphene multilayer (MLG) systems on which Ag clusters were deposited by magnetron sputtering. Atomic force microscopy shows that these clusters are organized in sizes of 200, 280 and 310 nm when deposited on SiO2/Si substrates for short deposition times of 6, 10 and 14 seconds, respectively. On the other hand, the Ag clusters increase their sizes when deposited on graphene systems to same times and deposition conditions. The formation of structural disorder due to Ag clusters on the surface of graphene bilayers is clearly observed through Raman spectroscopy. This is evident by a strong increase in the intensity of the D and D’ bands when compared to MLG with Ag clusters.
Removal of Cochineal Dye Color through Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Discharge Jet Arturo Quispe-Quispe, Luis F. Pérez-Falcón, Justiniano Quispe-Marcatoma, Carlos V. Landauro, Victor A. Peña Rodriguez Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2024 The extensive utilization of dyes across diverse industries has resulted in environmental pollution, leading to the degradation of water bodies. To prevent environmental contamination, the use of eco-friendly dyes and innovative processes for dye degradation is crucial. This study aimed to investigate the color removal process of cochineal dye (Dactylopius coccus Costa) using the atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ: Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet) technique. The dye extracted from the cochineal insect was treated with APPJ and the resulting color removal process was analyzed. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to investigate the plasma emission lines, and UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to monitor the color removal process. The results revealed that the decolorization of cochineal dye was a result of an oxidative degradation process caused by the interaction of the reactive species (NO3− and NO2−) generated by the APPJ plasma discharge with the dye molecules. This color removal process occurs in an acidic medium, leading to a pH change from 5.4 to 2.7. These pH changes can be attributed to fluctuations in the concentrations of reactive species such as nitrates and nitrites in the liquid phase. UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements showed that 90% of the cochineal color was removed within the first 10 min of treatment. This study enhances our understanding of natural color removal and provides insights into its mechanism, opening up possibilities for controlled modification and applications in various fields.
SYNTHESIS OF NANOCELLULOSE AS MECHANICAL REINFORCEMENT OF THERMOPLASTIC STARCH Antony A. Neciosup-Puican, José A. Castañeda-Vía, Carlos V. Landauro, Justiniano Quispe-Marcatoma, Ilanit Samolski, et al. Momento, 2023 Nanocellulose was successfully synthetized from microcrystalline cellulose by an acid hydrolysis process. The sample characterization was performed employing X-ray diffraction, zeta potential and confocal Raman microscopy. Nanocellulose-reinforced thermoplastic starch (TPS) composites were prepared by solution casting method, in which a small concentration of nanocellulose improved the elastic modulus of TPS. This property was calculated using the atomic force microscopy nanoindentation method. We conclude that nanocellulose is a good mechanical reinforcement for composites from commercial sources as starch.
