This study addresses the critical issue of technogenic safety and revitalization of devastated landscapes in the Kryvyi Rih basin, a major mining region in Ukraine. It highlights the environmental challenges posed by extensive mining activities, including sinkhole formation, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, exacerbated by climate change and erosion. The research evaluates the effectiveness of vegetation cover through phytomelioration efficiency coefficients (Kfm), revealing a steady decline from 1984 to 2024 due to expanding devastated areas. For instance, Kfm values dropped from 3.6 to 2.8 for sinkhole No. 1, indicating reduced ecological resilience. A key focus is the proposed cemented paste backfilling technology, utilizing mining waste to fill sinkholes. This method aims to mitigate surface deformations, enhance public safety, and restore soil integrity while repurposing industrial byproducts. The study analyzes sinkhole dynamics using GIS and historical data, identifying nonlinear growth patterns, particularly during 1995–2005. Polynomial models (R² up to 0.997) effectively describe these trends. Economic analysis underscores the escalating costs of delayed revitalization, with expenses rising up to sevenfold over 38 years. The research advocates for timely intervention to reduce both environmental risks and financial burdens. In conclusion, the integration of backfilling technologies and phytomelioration strategies offers a sustainable solution for restoring Kryvyi Rih’s landscapes, aligning with global climate goals and regional development needs. The findings emphasize the urgency of implementing these measures to ensure ecological stability and long-term socio-economic benefits.
  • ESTABLISHING THE PATTERNS OF CHANGE IN THE FIRE RESISTANCE OF TENT FABRIC DURING TREATMENT WITH POWDER PAINT
Yuriy Tsapko, Aleksii Tsapko, Oksana Berdnyk, Ruslan Likhnyovskyi, Tetiana Nehrii, et al.
Eastern European Journal of Enterprise Technologies, 2026
This study investigates the process that forms a fire-resistant coating based on polyester powder paint on tent fabric. The task addressed is to enable the fire resistance of tent fabric when treated with a coating based on polyester powder paint. This is important as the production of fire-resistant materials for construction is a relevant task. It has been proven that under the influence of a burner flame on a sample of tent fabric treated with a powder coating based on polyester paint, a heat-insulating layer of foam coke of about 4 mm was formed on the surface within 15 s. However, the absence of foam coke was found in some places. A layer of foam coke with a length of more than 50 mm and a width of 20 ÷ 30 formed on the surface of a sample of tent fabric treated with a mixture of polyester powder paint and an intumescent system, while the height of the swelling exceeds 10 mm. This refers the tent fabric to flame-retardant materials as no burning or smoldering was recorded during the temperature exposure, and the temperature did not exceed 100°C. Studies have shown that the obtained thermogravimetric indicators make it possible to establish the rate of thermal decomposition of the coating at certain temperatures and show a qualitative assessment of thermal effects and thermal destruction of materials, which is characterized by mass loss. Thus, endothermic processes for powder polyester paint begin when 210–290°C is reached with a subsequent intense mass loss of about 70%; when an intumescent system is added, the endothermic effects shift to the region of about 300–340°C with a mass loss of less than 56%. Thus, there is reason to argue about the possibility of effectively designing operationally stable biocomposites for construction
  • ZEOLITES AND CLAYS AS ADSORBENTS FOR SURFACTANTS: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY

Voprosy Khimii I Khimicheskoi Tekhnologii, 2025
This paper investigates natural sorbents, clinoptilolite and glauconite, for the removal of surfactants from wastewater. Surfactants are widely used in various industries, and their excessive presence in wastewater can lead to significant water pollution. Therefore, research into effective and cost-efficient sorbents is of increasing importance. Clinoptilolite and glauconite are non-metallic minerals that can adsorb surfactants from aqueous solutions, thus contributing to environmental sustainability. The influence of thermal and microwave treatment, as well as modification with metal-containing solutions, on the sorption properties of the materials was studied. Experimental results show that zeolites and clays are effective in removing surfactants from aqueous media; moreover, their adsorption capacity can be significantly enhanced through modification. The findings indicate that both types of sorbents are effective in removing dodecyl sulfonate from wastewater. In particular, Fe- and microwave-modified glauconite exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to natural glauconite, while metal-modified clinoptilolite samples outperformed the unmodified ones.
  • Modelling the seasonal dynamics of heavy metal pollution of water bodies within a mining area

    Rudarsko Geolosko Naftni Zbornik, 2025
Waste heaps from coal mines pollute the environment through spontaneous combustion of waste and contaminated wastewater leaking into underground and surface aquifers. Together with pollutants, a large concentration of heavy metals gets into the water. The object of this research is water bodies in the impact zone of the Chervonohrad mining district, a part of the Lviv-Volyn coal basin (Ukraine). Water chemical contamination level of anthropogenic reservoirs in the mining district was measured by indicators developed based on geochemical and hygienic environmental investigations. Methods of statistics of parameters of chemical pollution of water and soil; correlation analysis; data mining methods; assessment of similarity of ecotopes and grouping of chemical elements based on cluster analysis; multidimensional ordination of ecotopes in the space of geochemical indicators and graphical visualization based on Principle Component Analysis were used in the research. Chemical pollution of rivers and reservoirs in Male Polissia with heavy metals during the season is characterized by significant heterogeneity. The main reason of the deterioration of the ecological state of water bodies is related to the increase in the content of Mn, Ni, Cd, Pb compared to the maximum permissible concentration. The highest level of pollution during the entire monitoring season was observed in the water bodies at the foot of the Mezhyrichanska mine spoil tip near the city of Chervonohrad. Based on the correlation between the heavy metal content and the complex gradients of the aquatic environment, the following associations (groups) of chemical elements were identified: I - Cu, Pb, Co, Cd; II - Mn, Ni; III - Zn, Cr, Sr. The multidimensional ordination of water bodies on the axes of complex geochemical gradients of the environment reflects the seasonal dynamics of water pollution and its spatial features. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in the fact that forecasting dynamic trends, protection and restoration of ecosystem components are impossible without taking into account their relationships with environmental conditions, in particular, with the level of chemical pollution of water.
  • CLINOPTILOLITE- AND GLAUCONITE-BASED SORBENTS FOR LEAD REMOVAL FROM NATURAL WATERS
    Kateryna Stepova, Roman Konanets
Journal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2024
The aim of the research is to determine the effect of heat treatment and microwave irradiation on the sorption properties of a natural clinoptilolite and glauconite to Pb2+ ions. To improve the sorption capacity the samples were heat treated at 550 °C for 3 hours or microwaved at 790 W for 30 minutes. The XRD and XRF analysis present the content of investigated samples and prove the increase in the sorption capacity after treatment. After contact with Pb, its content in the natural clinoptilolite increased to 2.66%, and in the thermally treated – to 6.035%. The PbO content in natural glauconite increased to 3.9%, but after microwaving it reached 5.2% of the total sample weight. Heat treatment is useful for improving the sorption capacity of clinoptilolite, and microwave irradiation can significantly increase the adsorption capacity of glauconite.

  • Nonlinear Fitting of Iron Sorption on Bentonite to Theoretical Isotherm Models
    K. Stepova, L. Sysa, R. Konanets
Physics and Chemistry of Solid State, 2022
A comparative analysis of adsorption models application for the description of experimental isotherms of iron adsorption on two samples: natural bentonite and bentonite irradiated with microwave irradiation. Sorption isotherms are described using the theories of Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Langmuir-Freundlich. The constants and parameters of these equations are determined. Nonlinear fitting of experimental data to the theoretical models of isotherms showed that adsorption by native bentonite corresponds to the three-parameter Redlich-Peterson model, and microwave irradiated - to the Freindlich isotherm. This modeling allows to predict the maximum adsorption capacity, which is 37.7 mg / g of natural bentonite and 64.4 mg / g of the modified sample.
