Field experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of certain new acaricide molecules against citrus leaf mite Panonychus citri McGregor at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai during December to March 2019. Among these, fenpyroximate 5EC @1.0 ml/ l led to 85.9% reduction of mites, closely followed by spiromesifen 22.9SC @0.75 ml/ l (83.2 % reduction) and propargite 57EC @ 2.0 ml/ l (79.4% reduction). These treatments also gave higher fruit yield (14.7 t/ ha, 13.9 t/ha, 11.6 t/ha) and increased cost benefit ratio (1:2.8, 1:2.6, 1:2.2), respectively.

AbstractBackgroundThe tomato pinwormTuta absoluta(Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the key pests of tomato worldwide, causing an estimated crop loss of 80 to 100%. This pest has developed resistance to several pesticides due to overuse, resulting in control failures in the field. The use of biological insecticides asBacillus thuringiensisthat expressed insecticidal proteins can be an alternative tool by insecticides to suppress the pest population.Main bodyLaboratory study investigated the efficacy of standardBacillus thuringiensis(Bt) strains (4D1, 4D4, 4G1, 4K5 and 4XX4) againstT. absoluta. Bioassay was conducted using tomato leaf discs treated with spore crystal lysates prepared from the standard strains, and mortality data was subjected to concentration-mortality probit analysis. The LC50values forBt4D1,Bt4D4 andBt4G1 were 6.10, 6.62 and 8.18 μg/ml for the 2nd instar; 9.90, 10.20 and 11.12 μg/ml for the 3rd instar; and 19.82, 23.16 and 24.54 μg/ml for the 4th instar, respectively, while theBt4K5 andBt4XX4 were not toxic toT. absoluta.ConclusionThis study suggests thatBtstrain 4D1 is effective against different larval instars of the pest and can be used in its management.

AbstractThe tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Gelechiidae: Lepidoptera), is an introduced serious pest of tomato in India. Management of this insect pest mainly relies on insecticides because of its high infestation levels on all plant parts and life stages of tomato crop. This laboratory study investigated the efficacy of Cry1Ac protein of Bacillus thuringiensis against T. absoluta. The LC50 and LC95 values for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th larval instars were 0.12, 0.27, and 0.43 μg/ml and 0.63, 0.71, and 2.64 μg/ml, respectively. Experimental results showed that Cry1Ac is effective against different larval instars of tomato pinworm.

Tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta is a serious and notorious pest on tomato. Control mainly relies on insecticides because of their high infestation levels on all plant parts and life stages of the crop. This study, investigated the efficacy of different insecticides, against Tuta absoluta for different populations in laboratory conditions. The LC50 ranged from 0.27 to 2.0 ppm for chlorantraniliprole, from 1.01 to 2.25 ppm for flubendiamide, from 0.32 to 0.90 ppm for spinosad, from 0.98 to 6.52 ppm for imidacloprid, from 0.82 to 6.38 ppm for indoxacarb, from 967.32 to 1911.98 ppm, for chlorpyriphos, The resistance ratios ranged from 1.1 to 7.7-fold difference in all six cases. The laboratory experimental results showed that chlorantraniliprole and spinosad were the most toxic insecticides as compared to other chemicals and showed homogenous response to them.
