Since my doctoral thesis, I have worked on medieval illustrations and their place in the transmission of medical and scientific knowledge to Byzantium. Horses and their role in the army and the economy of Late Antiquity and Byzantium is another major theme of my research, especially through the study of equine science technology (horseshoes, stirrups, etc.) and the history of veterinary medicine. I have also written on Visual Studies and, since my habilitation, I am interested in the Christianization of pagan scientific literature.

Thoughts on the conception of Nature in Byzantium (11th-12th Centuries) Stavros Lazaris De Medio Aevo, 2024 This paper examines a new way of looking at nature in Byzantium in the 11th and 12th centuries, and how this may have impacted the conception of the individual. This shift in mentalities is studied by analysing several testimonies from this period, as well as other contemporary elements such as a pronounced taste for gardens and hunting. The study of artworks reinforces this perception, which bears witness to the Byzantines' desire to reflect on their place between nature and Creation.
Preliminary considerations on the columns and framings of the Nicetas codex (Laur. Plut. 74.7) Gary Bovine, Stavros Lazaris De Medio Aevo, 2024 The Nicetas codex (Laur. Plut. 74.7) dated 10th century is the oldest extant Greek manuscript on Hippocrates and his followers with commentaries of orthopaedic methods on fractures, luxations, subluxations, and bandaging techniques. Of visual interest are two texts, Apollonius of Citium on methods of joint treatment techniques, and Soranus of Ephesus on bandaging. The Apollonius of Citium text contains 29 color illustrations of Hippocrates techniques of reducing luxations of the joints, framed with semicircular pediments, two columns and arches. These frames are similar to the columns and arches seen in the Eusebian Gospel tables. The authors discuss the meaning of these frames as they apply to the Eusebian Gospels, and their importance as mnemonic devices for the Apollonius of Citium illustrations.

The paragdimatic image: From aristotle's anatomical diagrams to dioscorides' de materia medica Stavros Lazaris Pallas, 2013 Quand on etudie les rapports entre le texte et l’image dans un meme manuscrit medieval a sujet medical, il n’est pas rare de constater de grandes differences entre ces deux medias. Il est des cas ou l’ecrit est certes accompagne de miniatures, mais ou celles-ci ne trouvent pas echo dans le verbe : le sujet de la figure y est cite, mais aucun element descriptif n’y est apporte. Ces inadequations incitent alors a se questionner sur ce type d’image, qui n’etait en definitive pas, a l’origine, concue pour etre liee, ni « intellectuellement », ni « physiquement », a un ecrit unique et, par consequent, n’etait pas vouee a eclairer une seule œuvre. A travers la representation de l’oursin de mer, telle qu’elle apparait dans certains manuscrits du De materia medica de Pedanius Dioscoride, sont examines ici la nature et les fonctions de ce genre d’image que j’appelle paradigmatique. Cette analyse est aussi l’occasion d’etudier les Schemas anatomiques d’Aristote, d’ou cette representation de l’oursin proviendrait, et d’emettre quelques considerations sur le role de ce type d’image dans l’enseignement des disciplines medicales dans l’Antiquite.
